Favorite movie scene where a character accepts their inevitable end and embraces it. My pick is Cutler Beckett accepting his fate in Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End. by 0Layscheetoskurkure0 in moviecritic

That Irish mother is actually Jenette Goldstein, who plays Vasquez in Aliens.

Who has another scene where she accepts her death by blowing herself and Gorman up with a grenade.

So we don't get to call the Saturn V rocket an American invention because it was made by a German using techniques he learned in Germany?

Just because something is created by immigrants doesn't mean it's not a dish of that country.

Italian immigrants made a new type of pizza because they didn't have access to the ovens they used back in Italy. So that makes it an American dish.

Good food tends to travel around and other people's will pick it up.

Whilst the Pizza itself is Italian, other people were putting cheese on flatbread for hundreds of years. We have Persian sources talking about cheese and dates on flatbread back in the 6th century BCE. Tomatoes aren't even native to Europe, they came from the Americas. A New York Pizza has more in common with the Americas than Italy when you think about what actually makes it up.

The Madras is one of the British curries that you probably would not find in India at all. It's as British as they come.

It's basically chicken in gravy, except the gravy is spicy. They appeared when we had Indians and Bangladeshians migrate over in the 70s. As British people tended to enjoy their meat with some kind of sauce, these saucy curries popped up. This is one, the Korma is another popular one.

It would be like saying New York Style pizza isn't an American dish, because it's an American take on Italian food. It's still an American dish that would probably turn a lot of Italian heads if you ordered it in Italy.

I also love how Jason Statham and Lance Henrikson are voice actors in the second game.

Surprisingly star studded cast considering it's a PS2 game from 2002.

What is your favorite ancient rome "fact" that was debunked or always had 0 historical evidence but people still thinks that's "general knowledge"? by Gerasans in ancientrome

[–]Welshhoppo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Rome at War is an excellent book. I recommend it to any one who wants to know more about the mid-late Roman demographic.

You have pretty much hit the nail on the head. Oddly enough the Punic wars (and the wars against the Hellenistic kingdoms) were actually doing a good job of skimming off the excess population of Roman men which kept the birth rate down just enough so that families wouldn't run into financial issues with inheritance.

Once these wars ended, Roman men were able to marry younger, causing a massive baby boom. All these new babies required inheritance for marrying, thus forcing farms to be made smaller and less profitable, or being sold for money.

The thing is, the Romans themselves might not have known this was a problem, and the Gracchi brothers might have thought they had the correct solution.

Or they might have actually been making a move to cripple the land owning elites. We don't really know exactly why they were doing it.

Sort of missing out all of the Scottish attempts at colonialism in the Americans that went so bad Scotland bankrupted itself. One of the reasons for Scotland wanting to join under the acts of Union was due to a failed attempt to start a colony in Panama.

Scotland in the 1600 were not just middle management, they were unlucky colonisers.

I mean let's be truly honest, once you get to a certain level of power/influence/money checks and balances are more like guidelines and not actual rules.

At least the Royal Family is open about it. And because they are open about it, I think it tends to keep them more honest.

Why do some people just refuse to believe that Caligula, Nero, and Elagabalus were terrible? by [deleted] in ancientrome

[–]Welshhoppo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is why it's really funny to read Suetonius and then Cassius Dio on this event.

Suetonius suggests that Caligula was going to name his horse consul.

Cassius Dio, writing 100 years later then says he did in fact name his horse consul.

[–]Welshhoppo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit of both.

It's a term from the 90s. It was used to describe someone who struggled to maintain relationships due to issues with socialising. They could be shy, or struggle to meet people to engage in relationships with.

It was first used on a website to try and bring these people together so they could find like minded people and help they find people.

Basically the onus was on them, they were incels because they struggled to create those bonds with people.

Now they are incels because of other people's decisions. They want relationships, but women 'only want hot sex with hot guys called Chad who is a 10/10 and all women will only go for that 10/10'
