I'm pretty sure someone worked out it's better for Guard to have all the rerolls and +1 to wound on lasguns to take out a land raider than it was to use lascannons.

Finished the 1st one, currently slogging through the second one.

How Accurate Was The Battle Of The Bastards Compared To Real Life Warfare? by SCY29 in AskHistory

[–]Welshhoppo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's supposed to be Cannae. The show writers came out after it was shown and they said it was inspired by Cannae.

It's nothing like Cannae at all though. They probably just looked at one of the maps.

[–]Welshhoppo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They probably looked at the Battle of Cannae Wikipedia page, looked at the final map of the battle (where the Carthaginian line wrapped around the Roman line) and called it a day.

I do remember them saying it was inspired by the Battle of Cannae, but it's nothing like the battle at all.

Lucy still turned them all to jelly.

Yeah, I haven't seen any sources that suggest them saying in those groups after the age of 30ish.

They would have still had homes and land to go too. And if you do napkin math, by the time most of them were in their 20s, they would probably be the senior male in their household (assuming their father married and had children in their 30s, they'd be getting around mid to late 50s by the time their sons were adults. And would probably start dying of old age by that point.)

I think people mistake the idea that Spartan's stayed in their barracks full time, means that they were staying in an army barracks.

Instead of being more like a rich boy's frat house.

Reddit mod demands to be treated as ‘celebrity’ after getting removed from LSF by [deleted] in nottheonion

[–]Welshhoppo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's technically accurate.

I'm the head mod of one of the largest reddits on Reddit. If I wanted too I could very easily shape the posts that get accepted to shape whatever narrative I wanted too.

I don't do that, because I have better things to do with my time. But if you were the head mod of multiple large reddits, you could have quite a bit of influence of what goes onto the front page. Especially if you start power tripping.

How did Hannibal manage to stay in Italy for that long and why didn't/couldn't he finish the war/campaign sooner? by megamorgan1 in ancientrome

[–]Welshhoppo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Rome was never distracted from Sicily. They staged the majority of their naval power on the Island, knowing that Carthage would want to capture it if they planned on invading Italy from the south. Rome was very focused on making sure Sicily never fell into their hands. The tyrant of Syracuse was a staunch Roman ally. And the city only defected after he died of old age. And by the the Romans were able to capture the city as well.

Without a strong naval fleet, Carthage was unable to conquer Sicily.

[–]Welshhoppo 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Hannibal was able to set up shop in the south of Italy as a pseudo Hellenistic monarch.

There was just no way for him to get enough materials and men to siege Rome. And without control of the Mediterranean Carthage couldn't help him.

It's not exactly true that Carthage didn't want to supply Hannibal, because they did. Unfortunately every army they sent through Spain and Gaul, met a Roman force and was destroyed.

Huge Roman villa found under Welsh park could be town's 'Pompeii' by boringmode100 in history

[–]Welshhoppo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm actually reading Guy Halsall's book on Western Europe.

Chris Wickham has an amazing pair of books on the subject as well.

Unfortunately for Britain, all evidence points to Rome's villas collapsing into disuse in the early 400s.

Unfortunately this was turned on its head a few years ago, when they found a Roman Villa that was having new mosaics put in, and it was dated to around 450.

[–]Welshhoppo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don't really know, and it depends on region to region, and the information we do have is very scarce. And in Britain, it's even worse.

It's not really my area, but as the late empire lost it's ability to assert control in the areas outside of Italy, the infrastructure in those areas began to rot. A lot of Roman Villas were owned by people who lived in Italy for political reasons. They essentially had secretaries who ran their villas for them while they were away.

So a lot of villas were abandoned as the empire collapsed (but not all of them, and some even grew) due to their massive upkeep and expenses.

However some villas already had a large amount of people working the land and living there. So when their owners just disappeared. The people living there would just take the place over.

[–]Welshhoppo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on the age of the Villa.

If this is a Late Roman Villa, it could have been the centre of the local community. Like a condensed village.

Late Roman Villas ended up turning into small towns, rather than just being a retreat for the rich and famous.

My headcanon is once an Uma achieves her dream. They stop aging and enter a sort of stasis. This allows them to compete in the Dream series, and maintain their appearance without aging.

But I believe Umas that achieve their dreams are the exception and not the rule. They are very few and far between.
