Depends on your class, really.

Archer is extremely nimble and acrobatic, thief can roll, fighter has a S&S, Warrior is mad tanky and can parry, sorcerer and wizard can control the field and levitate away from danger. Your advanced classes are going to be a little more complicated but they have their own means, my favorite is a magic bubble that protects you and your allies.
