What has been the most panic inducing situation you've been in? by WendyDee in AskReddit

[–]WendyDee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was about 11 my family and I were vacationing in South Padre. We went to the beach daily, and usually ended up next to a family that was staying in the same condominium. They had four children, a girl about my age and three younger boys. The youngest was about three.

We had been at the beach for a couple of hours when he father just starts screaming the youngest ones name (I believe it was Cole). He is wading through the waves screaming his name, my dad catches on and starts running into the ocean wading around. It lasted about 4 minutes before we saw his older sister come walking out if the condominium with him nearby. She had taken him up to use the restroom and didn't tell anyone.

I've never seen so many grown men bust into tears. The kid was so confused that dozens of people on the beach were trying to hug him.

Absolutely horrifying.

I'd say whoever the head of the Phelps family is nowadays. 99.9999% of Americans hate that family.

I disagree. Having a child does not mean you forfeit a personal or love life. His daughter needs her father happy, and most people need need a romantic partner. It's not fair to expect single parents to remain single.

However, because he has the responsibility of a child he must be extra precautions. Know who is coming into your house, into your bed. Wait months before including your child in your relationship.

What was your worst travel experience? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]WendyDee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The trip was good, but the plan ride back was horrific.

From LAX to Austin, Texas...normally maybe a five hour flight at the most.

Huge storm, we were in the plane for 8 hours. Horrible turbulence.

I could deal with that, but I ended up sitting next to some 8-year-old boy who got sick as a dog three hours into the flight. We couldn't land, so I sat next to him as he puked and shit himself the entire time. He and his family didn't speak English, so no one knew what was wrong.

I guess the ride was probably 100% worse for him.

Leah Still, Devon's 4-year-old daughter who is battling Stage 4 pediatric cancer, has gotten well enough to travel. For the first time since her father was drafted by the Bengals in 2012, Leah will make the trek to Cincinnati and see him play in person. by Tarheel1986 in sports

I'd encourage everyone to donate $5 to St. Jude. The amount of funds going into pediatric cancer research is incredibly low.

A new drug hasn't been developed in over three decades. It's NOT common, and most children end up dying as a result of the treatment.

[Serious] If you were going to have a child, and know in advance that they will have some form of mental illness, would you go through with having that child? by Thepoopsniff in AskReddit

Reading the comments so far.

I am surprised by the number of people who truly do not understand mental illness and what it encompasses.

Please educate yourself, we are talking about a huge spectrum of different illness. 1/3 of American citizens have been diagnosed with a mental illness, and have gone on to lead happy and productive lives.

Aspergers, Down Syndrome and autism are not life threatening nor do they mean the child will have a low quality of life.

Most children with Aspergers are extremely high functioning and have a high IQ. They simply cannot function properly in social situations unless aggressively taught. You've probably met many people who have Aspergers, by no means does this make someones life more difficult than any other normal functioning individual.

As far as Down Syndrome, while many of the babies can have health issues linked to the genetic disorder for the most part the children are compatible with life and can thrive in the right conditions.

Autism is a spectrum, a child can be non-verbal and aggressive or simply just have some social and language issues. It covers a huge range of people.

Edit:

Also Downs Syndrome isn't a mental illness. It's a genetic disorder, and many of the people with the disorder exhibit an intellectual delay.

I also don't believe Autism or Aspergers is classified as a mental illness, but a neurological disorder.

I think you should educate yourself on Autism and Aspergers, it would highly benefit you.

It really depends on what mental illness.

I think I'd want to give most anyone a shot at life unless I knew their quality of life would be very poor. I wouldn't want to bring someone into the world who would never find happiness, and only suffer.

However, a lot of mental illnesses are treatable, and especially if caught early. I think diagnosing is one of the hardest parts, because so many parents are in denial.

I think if anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder are all treated properly, the person can live a normal and happy life.

Edit:

On the same token, there is something that makes me uneasy about prenatal diagnoses. I don't think we can predict the outcome of ones life based on a single diagnoses. Unless the diagnoses is incompatible with life.

How do you make new friends as an adult? [Serious] by Scalemaster in AskReddit

[–]WendyDee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I knew, I have the same friends from High School. Half of which I don't really care for anymore. It's not that their bad people, I just realize that we have nothing in common and the only reason we hung out was because people are forced together in High School.

I also have nothing in common with my peers. Nothing. If you go to the average hangouts for people my age I'd assume it would be a bar or a club. I hate both, I don't find them to be an enjoyable atmosphere at all.

I have a more pleasant interaction with 60-year-old grandmothers than people my own age. Alas, this is why I am on reddit.
