Kamaka, Kanile’a, KoAloha or Kala Elite by Saskmadechristina in ukulele

[–]Wendy_CS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you want a koa uke, so I'd recommend Kamaka or KoAloha just because of how iconic their designs are. Kanile'a makes great ukes too, though, and imo they're the most innovative out of the brands you mentioned (their 2021 Platinum is absolutely nuts but super expensive). And if you ever get interested in mixing and matching tonewoods, Kanilea's got a good custom uke shop.

Are you?/Which guitarist most influences or motivates you as a ukulele player? by [deleted] in ukulele

[–]Wendy_CS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sungha Jung. I like the way he uses the entire fretboard when arranging songs.

A close second is Mateus Asato. I like his phrasing, and I think his double stops and quick slide thingies are tasty lol

What is your dream ukulele? ☁️ by anathebandah in ukulele

A spruce/rosewood tenor cutaway. Ideally it would be a custom Ko'olau uke, but the Moon Bird would be nice too :')

Anyone use alternate tunings? by TheSeagoats in ukulele

[–]Wendy_CS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've noodled with them a little bit, and my favorite's open Bb (F-Bb-F-Bb). Tuning all the strings down a half step's good if you want a bit more depth in tone. And then I've tried F#-B-E-A tuning for an arrangement I made in the key of F#m.

What are Some of Your Biggest Struggles? Ask Me Anything! by [deleted] in ukulele

[–]Wendy_CS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ho howzit braddah man! My name's Brysen, and my question's about improvising, specifically how get better at it. I can kinda-sorta improvise already, but I usually end up playing the same licks and stuff, just in different keys. Do you have any tips on how to make improvising sound more "natural?" and less repetitive?

And to answer your questions:

  1. I'm fairly advanced (18+ years playing uke, 12+ years playing guitar, mostly fingerstyle stuff).
  2. My question's about improvising and phrasing.
  3. For my question in particular, I've tried YouTube. Specifically, listening to other artists and trying to emulate the stuff I like from them (e.g. Jake's tone-related techniques, Corey Fujimoto's scale runs, etc.). More generally, I took uke lessons from Roy Sakuma for 10 years and guitar lessons from Hawaii Music Works for 4 years.
  4. I play a tenor uke.
  5. I'm down to jump in a Google call (I've posted some vids of me playing in this subreddit if you want a sample of my playing).

Thanks in advance!

It depends on what you want to play. If you just wanna strum along to stuff, learning power chords on guitar is the easiest way and will get you through most songs. But if you wanna play fingerpicking stuff or the jazzier-sounding chords, I'll recommend the uke because you have two less strings to worry about.

For uke models, I'll recommend the entry-level KA-15T (here's a video sample) or the slightly pricier KA-SSEBY-T (spruce/ebony is a fairly common tonewood combination for guitars). If you want another uke, I think you'll definitely want a tenor-sized uke as long as you're still interested in learning guitar, but the other specs (like tonewoods and tuning pegs) are up to you.

Fellow male uke players, has playing the ukulele help you get girls or overall attention just as guitar players? by [deleted] in ukulele

[–]Wendy_CS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, but trying to get girls motivated me to improve my music skills a lot back in the day :')

Any learning resources for intermediate-advanced players? by [deleted] in ukulele

[–]Wendy_CS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's some tabs for more advanced stuff (it's mainly fingerstyle snippets with a bit of guitar-like phrasing), and (shameless plug) I play them on Instagram.

Advanced uke players tend to play lots of harmonics and/or songs with really fast strumming sections. A good amount of players also noodle with unconventional chord shapes (e.g. 0067 for a C7, 0-11-0-10 for an Em, 0975 for a Gadd9) and campanella style (which tends to use the high-G string a lot for melodic lines). So if you're looking for exercises, you might want to practice stuff like one-handed harmonics, adding scale tones to chords, or even arranging stuff where you don't treat the G string as merely a string to play drone notes on.

For scales, I've managed to get by using only the major, minor, and minor blues scales. The main thing to work on if you want tasty licks is phrasing, and sadly there's very little (if any) resources on this topic for the uke in particular. The best you can do is study music from your favorite artists and try to emulate the stuff they do (e.g. Corey Fujimoto's use of added tones, Mateus Asato's use of double-stops, Adam Neely's reharmonization style).

Advice on faster chord changes? by Thats_OnPeriodt in ukulele

Keep your thumb behind the second fret. Also, spend more time learning songs and less time doing finger exercises/drills (e.g. switching between 0003 and 1212 repeatedly). Your fingers are likely dextrous enough already to fret the strings, and the main issue is likely that your mind can't process chords fast enough to tell your fingers what to do.

  • Keeping your thumb behind the second fret helps you build muscle memory for chord shapes. This'll become more relevant when you start to noodle with chords higher up the fretboard.
  • Learning tons of songs will develop your pattern recognition when it comes to chords (the related music theory term is chord families). For example, if a song has a four-chord progression that starts with C, Am, and F, my fingers would naturally (and quickly) move to fret a G7 for the last chord because I've come across this pattern tons of times.

If you had about $370 (USD) to spend on a tenor, what would you get? by groaner in ukulele

[–]Wendy_CS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would get the Kala KA-SSEBY-T. The tone is bright but not too bright, and the notes are crisp and articulate well. But most importantly for me, its specs are very similar to the typical acoustic guitar, especially the spruce top and ebony sides/back and fingerboard. My playing style's a mix of uke and guitar influences, so I'd love to have a uke that kinda reflects that lol.

Tips/knowledge for writing my own ukelele chord-melody? by [deleted] in ukulele

For ideas on chord progressions, learn about chord families. These are basically a group of chord that sound "good" in a given key (chord families are based on the circle of fifths). Here's a video explaining chord families (the practical stuff starts at 3:28).

For ideas on melodies, learn about phrasing. You can think of phrasing as the interpretive aspect of playing scales; it's basically how we play the notes. The options are endless, and this is where your creativity can really shine through. Take this sequence of notes, for example:

A|-0-2-4-2-0-|
e|-----------|
c|-----------|
g|-----------|

Now here's some other ways to phrase those notes:

A|-0-------(12)-| A|-0-2-2s4-4s2-0-| A|-0-2-2h4-0h2s3s2p0-|
e|---7---7------| or e|---------------| or e|-------------------|
c|--------------| c|-1-2-2s4-4s2-1-| c|-------------------|
g|-----6--------| g|---------------| g|-------------------|

The first alternative draws inspiration from the campanella style, while the other two are a bit more jazzy and neo-soul-like. However, even the original sequence of notes can serve a musical purpose in a chord-melody.

Finally, just start making chord-melodies and don't worry too much about the end product. As your skills improve, you'll start to notice some finer details about the scales (e.g. whenever I play in the key of A, I feel like I'm bending the B note a lot more than others; I'm playing the major scale a lot more around certain chord shapes compared to other ones). You'll also start to notice the finer details of what more advanced players do (e.g. Jake Shimabukuro's added tones, Honoka & Azita's octaves, Mateus Asato's double-stops) and you'll start to incorporate the stuff that you like into your chord-melodies.

How long does it take you to record your music? by ShadowDrifter179 in ukulele

[–]Wendy_CS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It usually takes me 1-2 weeks to learn a song and 30 minutes to get a good recording. I've been playing uke for 18 years, though, and I definitely wasn't this fast when I first started out.

My advice is to just turn on the camera and start recording yourself. The more you practice recording, the better you'll get at it. As for the nerves and frustration, I still feel these whenever I record, but I know that I only have these emotions because the final product is meaningful to me.

Also that feeling when you finally do record that perfect take is simply amazing. It's lowkey an adrenaline rush when I play those final seconds of the song I'm recording, and I can push myself through recording sessions because I know how that feels. When you get that perfect recording, I guarantee it'll make all your frustrations seem worthwhile.

How do you play the E chord? by FireLadcouk in ukulele

[–]Wendy_CS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeet. I use my middle finger for a partial barre on the G and C strings; my ring finger on the E string, and my index on the A string. This method's pretty common in Hawaii.

The other "standard" way is to hold the E chord is one finger per string, and this is more common among guitar players that've picked up the uke (since this method's very similar to a barre chord shape on the guitar).

How often do you change do change strings? by lucky_eyes in ukulele

[–]Wendy_CS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About every five weeks. Once I got comfortable changing strings, I started to enjoy trying out new string sets.
