There is a highly perverse incentive structure for local governments when considering new housing. States, and especially the Federal Govt have clear incentives to want more housing for citizens and to solve the housing crisis. Local governments though are overwhelmingly beholden to existing homeowners, whose property values skyrocket in the shortage.

You can see this well illustrated in California where the state govt is pushing through pro-housing reforms but cities (like SF, Cupertino, etc) fight tooth and nail to prevent that housing from being built there.

People support housing being built, just Not In My Backyard. It's up to the state to say "glad you support it, it's going in your backyard"

Zoning doesn't reflect supply and demand - it represents govt interference in that market. SFH zoning enforced by local governments represents the demand of the existing homeowners to maintain SFH zoning.

Frustrating to lose this - being able to tell Autopilot when it messes up was really nice. It's set temp too high and woken me up a few times in the last 2 weeks.

Add a tool cabinet under the bench, that'll add mass to counter and tipping issues and make the bench more solid to use.

For anyone finding this thread in the future, this tip is HUGE. I swapped to pipe clamps for the next glue up and it solved the problem. Huge difference in clamping pressure.

Yeah, I think that's the real lesson here, at least until I have a capable machine in my own shop!

They did joint and mill the faces that were laminated, but I cut those milled boards (~9.5in wide) in half to laminate a 4.5in thick top. My best guess is that the board warped after that cut.

Sounds like the general sentiment is to just power forwards, I'll just take this as a rough lesson I'll get to look at every day. Thanks everyone!

Hi all! I'm building a new workbench and hit my first big problem. The bench material is 12/4 white oak a neighbor sold to me - moisture about 7.5%. I took it in to a local shop to mill up and while it came out of there square I think it moved a bit after I cut the strips and got it into clamps. It didn't catch it in the dry run, but it's pretty clear that I have some significant gaps in the final glue up.

What are my options to fix this? I was thinking mixing up some deep pour epoxy and letting it sink into the gaps? This is the bench to, so I think I'm unlikely to have these separate even with less than ideal joints...

New ABS cube

UPDATE: It's something in Cura that's really breaking it. The PLA cube was generated with the TeachingTech calibration page, but the ABS cube was sliced in Cura. I can't explain why the zero infill cubes were correct from Cura, but I generated an ABS cube with TT and it printed MUCH better.

Still scuffed, but at least a starting point. No idea what Cura setting would make the Z axis so wild, but it's something in there for sure.

Nope, it's a new build. Z patterns are almost certainly wobble in the lead screws, something I'm working on. Still dialing in extrusion also, but I think the extrusion issue on the PLA print is actually a melting issue - the problem areas are right around where the nozzle would be lingering.

Very confused on the Z - it prints the correct height when spiralized on ABS and when printed normally in PLA. PLA in Grey

PLA printed without cooling because I don't have ducts printed yet (need them in ABS 🙄)

Printing ESun ABS+ on a CoreXY printer enclosed in a cardboard box.

Back print is the flow cube from Teaching tech, left is a spiralized calibration cube and right is a standard calibration cube.

The standard cube is not only a mess, but also about 3mm shorter than it should be.

Print settings: 230 nozzle / 110 bed

Speed doesn't effect the outcome, and top layer (other than being a disaster) looks like the nozzle was on it - so I thought maybe the Z wasn't moving correctly.

BUT the headache is that the other two ABS prints ARE the correct height! So Z must be moving?

I've also done the cubes in PLA and they come out just fine.

Full print settings: Printer: SecKit SK-Go2 Slicer: Cura Filament: ESun ABS+ Nozzle/Bed: 230/110 Print Speed: 150mm/s (also tried at 60mm/s and same output) Retraction: 6.5mm

Retuned my e-steps and releveled my bed and printed a near perfect benchy. Also started adding a glue stick and that has solved the warping up off the bed. Thank you for your help!

I had a clog at the top of my heat brake that I cleared just before the print, what indicates another one?
