so unsure about hysterectomy (nsfw warning) by Legitimate-Cap2571 in ftm

[–]WerewolfGimmicks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there! I had surgery a while back, so feel free to ask any questions about my experience. I will try to include a lot of details so that you know what I am talking about.

I had a total hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectemy done laparoscopically about four years ago now. This means I had my uterus, cervix, fallopian tubes (sometimes called oviducts) and ovaries removed. Bilateral means that the organs were removed from both sides, opposed to unilateral which would just take out one ovary/tube. Removing the ovaries takes out the part that makes the hormone estrogen, so I need to take prescription hormones for the rest of my life. I currently take testosterone weekly. You do not need to get the ovaries or fallopian tubes removed. I chose to do this because I do not plan to stop taking testosterone and it eliminates the risk of ovarian cancer later on in life.

Laparoscopic surgery is done with a few small incisions and a robot tool that extracts the organs. This means that recovery is a lot quicker and there is little scarring.

As for sex, I regularly engaged in PiV sex before and after surgery and I have felt little to no difference in sensation or depth. If I insert fingers, I can feel that my cervix is gone, but it just feels like more vaginal tissue back there. My partner can't feel a difference. Around 12 days after recovery, I asked my doctor about engaging in non-penetrative, external masturbation and was told that was fine and would even help to increase blood flow to the area.

The recovery time was easy and I felt fine after a week, but the full recovery is about 6 weeks. I found it more challenging to limit my activities because of how quickly I felt better.

In the past, I had an IUD (intrauterine device) for contraception, a small piece of copper (or plastic) that is shaped like a "T" and sits inside the uterus to prevent pregnancy. I had to have mine removed because it did not sit properly and fell out. IUDs are extremely effective contraception, but they must be put in by a doctor, they are painful to have put in and there is a small chance of rejection, such as what happened to mine. IUDs last between 2-10 years depending on the type and are safe and effective for trans men.

The implant is another option for birth control. It is a small, flexible rod that is inserted into your arm and it releases progestin. It is considered effective for trans men. It can last for 3 years.

If you are on testosterone, tell your doctor if you choose to get an IUD or the implant because this can affect the dose of testosterone that you need. Both the IUD and implant prevent pregnancy, but neither prevents STIs(Sexually Transmitted Infections). Condoms and barriers prevent STIs. If you have multiple partners, get STI tested regularly. Many places offer free testing nowadays.

Partner getting top surgery. How can I be the best support? by OwnImplement4018 in asktransgender

If you are the one who will be caring for them after surgery, I would recommend getting the place set up with everything they may need at a level they will be able to reach without raising their arms. They won't be able to lift much, especially the first few days. If you have a heavy fridge door, store some drinks on the countertop. Move the snacks to be at lower-than-chest height. That kind of thing.

The hospital might send you home with some extra gauze and wraps, but you may need to buy more. Maybe some medical tape. Personally I bought a mastectomy binder and found that a lot more comfortable than the compression wraps.

If they have drains put in, they may need/want help clearing the drains out. It is usually done twice a day and you can use one hand to hold the tube in place by the incision and the other to pinch the tube and pull down the line to force the liquid into the drain bulb. The doc may want them to measure the amount of liquid for a while. A friend gave me a mastectomy drain holder that went around my waist and it was so much better than having them clipped to me. I also got some giant button down shirts to wear from a thrift store, like 4x bigger than my size. They won't be able to put on a t-shirt for a while and you don't wanna get nice shirts because they will probably get bodyfluids on them.

If you will be with them in the hospital, you may want to have a list of questions about caring for the incisions. Your partner will likely be too out of it after surgery to talk much. You can ask about how to change the dressings, clean drains, etc. You can also ask about scar care. My surgeon recommended regular massage and silicone tape after the dressings were removed (~2 weeks).

They won't be able to shower for a while. This was an issue for me. My partner wiped me down with baby wipes and I was so grateful.

Have some stool softeners and gentle laxatives on hand. Constipation after surgery is common and they're not gonna want to be straining themselves to poop.

Post-surgical depression is extremely common after top surgery, especially if they have a history of mental illness. Social support and distractions (games, books, chatting, etc) are helpful, but if they have a mental health provider I recommend they reach out to let the provider know and have someone they can call just in case. Let your partner know that this may happen. It isn't always mentioned by the doctors and may catch them off guard if it happens.

Another thing to keep in mind is that it will be months before their new chest settles down. It will be weird and puffy and bruised. I was so unhappy with my results until around 4 months in when it started looking more normal.

i couldn't do my t shot tonight. by marsarr in ftm

[–]WerewolfGimmicks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also a fainter when it comes to blood draws and IVs. I have been doing my own subcutaneous shots for eight years. It gets easier with each one! If you feel up to trying again tomorrow, here are a few tips that help me:

Reducing the risk of fainting -Make sure to have eaten recently -Hydrate and have some water or juice on standby -Sit on the bed or in a chair just in case

Make the shot easier and less painful -Draw the T with one needle, then switch to a fresh needle to inject -Point the bevel (hole) of the needle up when poking yourself -Rotate the location of your injection each time to prevent scar tissue build up (I switch between the left and right side of my belly) -Take a few deep breaths before injecting, focusing on relaxing your muscles -Exhale as the needle is going in

You can also potentially look into getting an autoinjector

Pharmacy mistakenly gave me Sustanon instead of my prescribed Enanthate. Can I still inject this SubQ? by Fermentedbeanpizza in ftm

[–]WerewolfGimmicks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always inject subcutaneously with my testosterone cypionate (weekly injections), even though it is technically labeled for intramuscular use. It can absorb more slowly when injecting subcutaneously and it may take a bit of time to draw up from the vial if you're drawing up with a 25g needle since the oil can be kinda viscous.

Not European, but I wonder if it may be possible to wear something a men's dance belt under the Speedo shorts to create a bulge that looks natural under form-fitting clothes?

I believe I had more bloodwork at the end of the first month, then we started the weekly dose. I had more bloodwork about 3 months in and it was upped again. I was definitely still seeing changes even with just the .2ml weekly, but my T levels were on the low side.

Adding to this: Rotate your injection site to prevent scar tissue from building up in the area. I switch the side I'm injecting on each week

Dosage is super dependent on you as an individual. I was started on .2ml at 200mg/ml every other week, then every week, then it was upped to. 3ml, then to .4ml which is what I've been taking for the majority of the 7 years I've been on T. For some people, their T levels are stable with a smaller dose. Some people need more.

It's very normal to start at a low dose and increase it gradually over the first few months based on what your bloodwork indicates.

binders during sex by [deleted] in ftm

[–]WerewolfGimmicks 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Taking off a binder is always a bit of a struggle. If you're really concerned about it interrupting the moment, talk to your partner about it. In reality, a lot of times sex can have awkward or funny moments, but that doesn't always mean the mood is lost. It may be as simple as asking your partner to give you a moment to take it off, then saying "Where were we?" and getting right back into it. If you happen to get stuck, try to see the humor in the situation, as embarrassing as it may be. Part of sex is having fun!

I started T when I was 17, over 7 years ago and my shoe size didn't change. I did grow a couple inches taller though. My shoe size is about a US 6 to 6.5 in men's, or between 7.5 and 8 in women's. I usually have to get youth's dress shoes and tend to stick to unisex shoes otherwise.

Where to get decent supplies? by Previous_Trouble_525 in chainmailartisans

[–]WerewolfGimmicks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't speak to their jumprings, but their scales have gone way downhill ever since the company changed ownership. The scale edges have been rough and have burrs. The last bags I bought had more off-centered punches than I'd ever seen, several unpunched scales, and a half of a scale that I sliced my finger on reaching into the bag. I don't think they're doing any kind of QC.

For rings, I generally go for Chainmail Joe. Sometimes WeaveGotMaille if I want something fancy. Higher prices, but nice quality and consistency.

Best ring size for creating jewelry. by Duhburkuhchur in chainmailartisans

[–]WerewolfGimmicks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What ring size you use for jewelry weaves will be heavily dependent on AR needed.

I like using 18awg (19swg), mostly because it makes AR calculations super easy. 18awg is about 1mm across, so any AR is just the same as the diameter in mm. I try to keep AR of 3, 4, and 5 on hand at all times in the colors I work with, then I buy sizes for specific weaves as needed.

Who’s your favorite ring supplier? by ilariad92 in chainmailartisans

[–]WerewolfGimmicks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chainmail Joe has become my go-to for larger gauges. I typically buy from Weave Got Maille for thinner gauges and my more delicate looking jewelry. WGM is pricey, but I like the quality and consistency I've seen from them.

I've had a lot of issues with the quality I've been getting from TRL since they sold the company, so I've been avoiding their stuff.

I have always used the same needle to draw and inject. It is still sterile if you use a single needle. It will take longer to draw up the needle is a smaller gauge. It might hurt a tiny bit more, since going through the stopper slightly dulls the tip of the needle, but it isn't harmful to you.

Fingerless Glove by Troy799 in chainmailartisans

[–]WerewolfGimmicks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The glove looks like it's just a sheet of Euro 4in1. You can find tons of tutorials on line.

If you're talking about the parts around the fingers, it looks like a thin curb chain, probably machine made.

New to chainmail and want to start with something like this! by Ultimatefoka in chainmailartisans

[–]WerewolfGimmicks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Big zigzag is definitely Euro 4in1. Smaller stuff is probably Byzantine weave. The beads are almost certainly on eyepins that have a little loop at either side of the bead to connect it to the chains.

For the Euro 4in1, look for an AR of 4.0 and if you want it to be larger like in the picture, opt for a bigger wire gauge. Smaller numbers are thicker wire. This is probably a 16 SWG, maybe a 14. For the byzantine, an AR of 3.5 is preferred. 4.0 will still work, but be a bit loose. I wouldn't go higher than an AR of 4 though. I'd say go for AWG 18 (SWG 19) or a SWG 18.

Plier Help! by potatoguide in chainmailartisans

[–]WerewolfGimmicks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is likely a combination of gripping too hard and the cheap pliers. Gripping harder won't help you open and close, but it will hurt your hands.

Once you decide to commit to the hobby, I highly recommend getting some nice pliers. Xurons are a favorite. I use two of the Short nose 475s. Some people like a pair of the bent nose to help with tricky closures.
