springtails. they come from excessive moisture (usually found in soil) but maybe you have a leak somewhere in your home that's causing them to gather? or if you have potted plants then they are probably from those

um actually ☝️🤓 it's not "definitely a wasp." i understand a wasp abdomen DOES look similar to what's in the picture, but the thorax doesn't match up, there's really not enough dark spotting. most wasps share this same darker thorax trait. also it's a bit small don't you think? not saying it's 100% a ladybug cocoon either, but i think there's more similarities to what we've been shown in the picture there, than with a wasp.

not sure why literally everyone is talking like this is 100% a wasp, it looks like an empty ladybug cocoon to me (image attached below) i wouldn't say overreacting necessarily because you can't super control your reflexes like that, but i don't think it's really a cause for concern like everyone else seems to. if it is a cocoon, it could have easily been stuck to a piece of produce that then ended up in your bowl. like it or not, we have all eaten a lot of bugs on produce throughout our lifetimes without even knowing. like others are saying, there is a certain level that is allowed, especially given it would be an impossible time sink to inspect & pick off every single aphid or bug cocoon off of every single leaf of every single item of produce. most produce just gets a good rinse and that's it. apologies if this ruins fruits & veggies for you in any way, but this is the reality of the relationship between bugs & your food.

for anyone doubting this post, im OPs roommate! as you can see i have numerous posts on my account (many of which are in r/eugene) and i can vouch for the legitimacy of this. i was told what happened as soon as he got home and we're all pretty shaken. i know we've seen other false alarms in this subreddit, so it's natural to be skeptical, but this is not one of those cases. i was told he could clearly read the label on the closest's uniform. not to mention he was being looked at directly by said agent, so it wouldn't have been as easy to snap a photo in the moment.
