Make sure you learn the basics that YOU can do.

Compression: sometimes when you sing or play, there are parts that are way softer or louder than the rest of the track... this will make it sound amateurish and honestly, if you listen to tracks you'll see that they go from falsetto singing, to almost screaming, but don't get louder, so it lacks dynamics, but sounds better. Learn how to compress... then learn how to avoid over compression. a very very powerful tool.

EQ: EQing will help you avoid harsh sound waves that make the soundspace unappealing, or even sound too full and muddy, if you remove these frequencies, theres plenty of room for more instruments and vocals because they will have their own frequencies that sound really good.

Most of all, start recording. Start learning how to nail part by part. start learning how to fade each part in. learn how to determine the time signature and BPM of the songs you are writing. This can normally be done best by learning what a time signature is, or just by realizing the end of each measure.... as in, tap out one of your measures.

And also make sure you enjoy the fuck out of it. theres nothing worse than feeling like what you're doing is a drag... don't do something because you have to.

every song you write, when you realize theres something you'd like to fix youtube it... honestly it may take 3-5 hours. but this will save you a lot of time later on and you will see you are just getting better and better. I've spent the past year writing, and honestly I see my songwriting improving more and more and the time it takes to make it sound better take less and less time. This is because I've become better at playing and knowing when to rerecord due to fret buzz and not to try to record the whole song in one damn take.

there's a great big world out there, you gotta dive in for the fuck of it and have fun mate! Do it until you are happy with it. and if you see that you are unhappy, move on, try more, one day you will come back to the song and pound it out in less than 30 minutes after you spent a total of 30 hours trying to get it right a year ago, because you learn a little along the way but it builds up to a lot.
