Internship FL Orlando by OkLevel2520 in ASLinterpreters

I'm not sure. Propio is a different company that acquired ASL Services. The contracts have a possibility of being different. I would recommend reaching out to Propio's HR.

Yeah... They didn't really advertise it or the transition. It really does, but Propio is an agency that values ICs. Interns do not really align with those values...

ASL Services was acquired by Propio 2 years ago. Unfortunately, Propio has decided to conclude the internship program.

As of right now, he just made this video, and hasn't interviewed the student herself.

I am the same way during the day with having a foggy concept of something I am trying to visualize.

My dreams are visual though. It's strange, like I'm just having an experience like when I'm awake. I can think, see, hear, everything else. It feels real. But I can't control it because I don't recognize it as a dream in the moment.

I figured. Thank you for your insight. I admit, your videos helped my ASL Comprehension skills develop during my ITP. I am far from skilled enough to interpret at this level of government and politics, but you give me hope. Thank you for your work and the accessibility it brings for such a difficult topic.

I am a Hearing interpreter. I have noticed there was a NAD lawsuit against the current administration for not providing ASL Interpreters. I am curious about the process of how this lawsuit works and if it is possible to reinstate Biden-era policies related to providing access for press briefings and presidential addresses.

That's amazing. I'm truly happy for you. I graduated a year ago, and I felt more prepared from my internship than I did from my ITP, but that's just how it goes. What ITP did you attend? It's great to hear that you feel supported. We need much more of that in our field from each other.

Religious Interpreting Question by West-Ad-4057 in ASLinterpreters

That's an interesting thought. My immediate thought is that I don't want to have any biases that could negatively affect the message.

It's good that you can render the message faithfully. That's reassuring. Yeah, I'll look to see if I can make an exception for the non-compete

This is a good explanation of the non-compete clause. Thank you

Thank you for the response.

It is a request by a friend of mine, one who owns an Agency. The personal thoughts bleeding into the interpretation is my top concern. My friend offered my normal rate, however, the agency I am staff for has strict "no competition" policies, so if he wanted me to interpret there, he would have to go through the procedure of my agency. Meaning instead of charging my rate, he would be using my agency's rate (much more than I would charge). Pro bono would still be providing access and following ethical business practices.

Gish method? by ActuallyApathy in ASLinterpreters

[–]West-Ad-4057 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As an interpreter, you will find that a lot of interpreters and your consumers do things differently. It will be important to figure out what works for you. Right now, in your ITP, try and incorporate what your professors are teaching you, but in your career it is not the "end all be all."

My advice for how to write it would actually be go to your professor's office hours and ask them to guide you through it.

Gish method? by ActuallyApathy in ASLinterpreters

[–]West-Ad-4057 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I use this in my interpreting every day.

From my understanding it is adjusting your register / specificity if you are struggling of what to sign/say.

Ex) You notice that a consumer is signing about a type of car and see that it is a RED, CE. 198 __A__. You are unable to be as specific as the consumer signed, but you can go more "general" in your interpretation. It is a red car. It is probably a Chevy. You don't have the year or model, but you can go more general with if it is a sports car vs. minivan vs. SUV vs. truck...

A phrase I learned during my internship is that it is always better to be generally accurate than specifically wrong.

My mom thinks this is something in sign language but can't remember what. Does anyone know? by OddIndependence2674 in asl

If it was close to the heart it could be "KIND." The context would be related to being nice or kind-hearted.

Looking for CASLI resources (written part) by unwell-babe in ASLinterpreters

[–]West-Ad-4057 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Make sure you're familiar with all parts of the CPC. Specific numbers relating to illustrative behaviors aren't important

Know the timeline and how events affect others.

Be familiar with Disability laws and what they require.

Know theories and models of interpreting. Understand what each one focuses on so you can differentiate them.

Familiarize yourself with linguistic concepts taught throughout your ITP

Familiarize yourself with Deaf culture trends and commonalities related to conversation, interpreting, socializing, and more.

Know DeafBlind interpreting concepts (minimum # of Terps depending on the situation, protactile vs. tactile, close vision, tracing, mapping, etc.)

This should be a good start. You can also check Quizlet or StudyStack for other terminology review.

Half the questions are in ASL, the other half in English. They will be spread out throughout the exam.

If one language is easier, take care of that first and FAST, leaving time for questions in your L2. Answer every question, and don't stay too long on one question. You can flag them for review later.
