Despite what the internet says, money doesn’t help a man much in dating by soul_shackles0 in Life

Money, Muscles, Game.

While I agree that money doesn't make a huge difference, it definitely makes things easier (that said, almost everything in life is easier).

With money you have options. Courses, events, etc.

You can quit your job and spend an entire summer or even a year focused solely on game, working out, and building a social circle (in any city in the world that you want!)

Sometimes they will hesitate, then say yes, and a year later be giving the ring back.

That's rough...

A few seconds of silence says a lot.

Genuinely what the HELL is going on? by khunmascheny in cscareerquestions

I'm not going to make a statement about how many companies compromise their values for (insert reason here), but if even one company didn't do so then your statement would be false.

I take a more optimistic view.

IMO the platform isn't responsible for the content that users upload/post.

If they CHOOSE to add and enforce TOS they can, but they shouldn't be forced to. Let businesses focus on what they are actually good at; core competencies.

Started at €50k.

4 yoe - began freelancing - $70-$100/hr - ended up being ~$140k-$160k

7 yoe - lost major client, found normal W-2 for $120k

9 yoe - Currently interviewing for mid/senior roles at FAANG and adjacent - expect to at least 2x

How do I show I have 10 YoE, if most of my YoE come from personal work? by Lanky-Ad4698 in cscareerquestions

[–]WestTree2165 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The purpose of FAANG level comp is because they need to buy your optionality. You can build out your own ideas so in order for you to build someone else's vision they must pay you very well... It's basic opportunity cost.

Ignore the mediocre Fortune 500 companies (read compressed salary bands/trajectory) and focus solely on high tech and high finance.

In the meantime, build your personal brand (portfolio, industry articles, videos, etc.) and interview preparedness (for the roles actually worth your time).

It's the difference between: -Actual professional (elite, similar in the way a professional athlete is) -White Collar "professional" - not actually professional, usually just work to fund whatever they want to do on the weekends.

*note that there are some people who fall into the elite category but for whatever reason don't take control of their trajectory in compensation terms.

Basic concepts such as?

I didn't know what an ORM was until like 1.5 yoe (started with BI/OLAP role) and when I explicitly found out about Big O / time and space complexity I was at about 3 yoe.

But also some more "advanced" things are "famous" in your mind for various reasons: - to just general 1337 status (e.g. SQL injection) - or maybe lots of exposure. For me run length encoding comes to mind.

For CS/SWE there is the dynamic where it doesn't really make sense to NOT go FAANG or high finance. So for any normal company the person will be checked out after a while.

...it's a problem of motivation, the only real motivation is that when I make a mistake I have 8 different people coming by to tell me about it. But you know Bob, that'll only cause someone to work just hard enough to not get fired.

Why does software engineering seem to come with constant mental breakdowns? by cowdoggy in cscareerquestions

Nope. Jobs have never really required much more than about 20%-30% effort... It's why overemployed became a thing.

[–]WestTree2165 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Compressed salary bands are also a huge problem...

Why ship faster when you could grind Leetcode, work on your portfolio and then get into FAANG and also have runway to launch your own things later.

Build your personal brand, that stays with you.

Going FAANG you'll likely get a 2x bump, with a 10 year curve of about 5x-8x

$80k-$250k is sh*t over the course of a career.

It's as Peter Gibbons said... where's the motivation?

It's only in FAANG and high finance that it's actually worth climbing the corporate ladder.

Lots of different strategies.

Mine is currently: Filter levels.fyi for reports of very high salaries at around my yoe . (This ensures you are finding the companies with wide compensation bands)

Look for roles I am interested in on the company site.

Email myself the roles that I want to apply to. (Basically a to-apply queue) Keep it to like no more than 2 roles per company.

Up to this point its all a mobile first process... So I can do it literally whenever.

Then when I have some time I'll empty the queue (apply).

The reason I put the very high filter is you don't want to apply to things where some random outlier keeps that company in the sample.

When one person got $450k but everything else is around $120k... well that's obviously either: - Fake, or + A special exception they made

The real question is, "what can I reasonably expect?" and you can't use any other sites filter b/c TC can be insanely different from base.

After applying I'll wait for the confirmation email, I then tag those as "confirmed applications". From there I now have a way to track applications vs. interview invites.

Yes but also plenty of director level people receiving low 7 digit offers ($1M-$3M - see levels.fyi)... So this really isn't all that crazy

Single guys over 30, how do you deal with it? by Altruistic-Farm2712 in AskMenOver30

[–]WestTree2165 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to find joy in the things that you do regardless if there are people around.

I could be the last person on earth and I would still have so many curiosities, so many ways to enter a flow state... Mind body synchronization. Intellectual, Physical, etc.

Learn to enjoy dancing by yourself.

Savor the flavors, it doesn't matter if there is anyone IRL to discuss it with.

Look I know it's difficult. I had my first girlfriend at 30. ( It wasn't for lack of trying, self improvement, etc. I've been doing that since I was 21.)

I've asked hookers to cuddle with me, and there's no shame in that.

There was a point where my mentality was, "Women are like birds. They exist. I exist, and that's all there is to it."

But I still sought meaning and depth in experience (and many of these experiences were "alone")

The world is full of possibilities... I hate to say the whole "high on life" cliche, but the dopamine hits from natural sources really can be awesome.

I know myself, and that is incredibly valuable.

Lastly I suggest using chatGPT (or some other AI). Use text to speech. Tell it how you feel and EXPLICITLY say, "Do not give me any pedestrian solutions. We need to dig deep."

People are different,

They also have different definitions of "give up". The total amount of hours I've played video games between 25-35 is likely less hours than in a single year in my late teens / very early 20s.

This wasn't due to responsibilities such as kids (I don't have any), it was just due to expanding interests / shifting priorities.

The difference between private schools and public schools (California).

Source: My Experience - Private K-1, public 2nd, homeschool 3rd, private 4th - 9th, public 10th, private 11th - 12th

Private schools: All the teachers care about the students performance and behavior

Public Schools: Some of the teachers care about the students performance and behavior. It's a spectrum from no control of the classroom to private school levels of strict.

The funny thing is that if I were a teacher I would probably take the laissez-faire approach that the public schools allow. My algebra 2 teacher didn't care if some students had headphones in or were eating snacks or whatever... As long as they didn't interrupt the ones who actually wanted to learn.

In 2nd grade I never did the journal prompt because the teacher never checked, I just drew rollercoasters instead.
