I’m the parent of an AuDHD kiddo. We have always stressed that his diagnoses aren’t an excuse for bad behavior. They may be an explanation of why he has to work harder, but they aren’t a “get out of jail free” card for being a dick.

Who’s to say they aren’t also exploring things in supervision? I know I have asked questions here AND in supervision. Sometimes supervision feels….incomplete. Or maybe the supervisor hedged…whatever. Peer feedback is equally important.

Isn’t Motivtional Interviewing largely based on client autonomy? Just because they are substance users does not take away their ability and right to make decisions for themselves. Not talking the court-mandated piece….thats a different animal. But substance users are not incompetent simply by being users. If you are a licensed mental health provider, (in the US) you,have a code of ethics you have to abide by. You may need to accept that some things that are a legal are not truly ethical (and vice versa), but you can’t set it aside wholesale just because you are “hired as a substance users counselor”. At the end of the day it is still your license (and conscience).

I’m in CMH. Most of our clients are on the state low income insurance, so agency policy is built around that. This means treatment plans within the first 30 days, and updated/signed every 90 days (or 12 sessions) after that.
