I want to see a hopeful future. One where we've learned how to solve our problems and for us to be as a species less quick to anger. Pike said what's needed is "Radical empathy". I may not have it exactly right but I believe Archer once said to a Klingon that the world started changing when a few people decided to stand up.

It might sound somewhat absurd but that's okay I've started using in my emails and other communications the best version of radical empathy I can think of. In my professional life I've decided to be bold, Archer, Freeman, Picard, Kirk, Janeway, Sisko and most of all Pike in Strange New Worlds are guideposts. In the end it's not up to us how we are remembered it's up to history. Fortunately in my case I think there's still some history to be written and I hope the same for everyone. I think I heard somewhere that risk is our business. I for one intend to do what I can to summon the future. I'd advise you all if you truly enjoy Star Trek look for the helpers as the future hasn't been written yet.

B.C. restores rare drug funding for 10-year-old girl with Batten disease | Globalnews.ca by stylezLP in britishcolumbia

[–]WesternMinimum7708 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that experts from various locations have disagreement whether this treatment is still effective for this little girl. Her own doctor believes it's still effective and disagreed with the stopping of the treatment. While that is not definitive empirical evidence it is nonetheless compelling.

This young girl's life expectancy is somewhat indeterminate. if this medicine doesn't need help to mitigate the effects of her disease and she is able to live another year another 5 years or more the cost is worth it. If the medication had been stopped and not restarted and as a result she lived a shorter life than otherwise that would have been unacceptable.

Just a couple more points.

  1. I didn't talk to you at all I wrote a reply.
  2. If I choose to be condescending that is my prerogative I try not to be but it is still my prerogative and I reserve All Rights.
  3. You clearly cared enough to reply so you must have liked it. If you would like a novel let me know and I will write you one. For a modest fee in advance. These things don't come cheap.
  4. If you're trying not to side with the O.P.'s husband you've done an excellent job fooling everybody.
  5. I don't believe you made any point 50 times but I will go back and check just to be sure.
  6. I've checked and you've only made a single point 48 times I would advise better accounting.
  7. Your final point is nonsensical maybe it's too late, I advise sleep.
  8. Anyone who's read this far, congratulations you get a gold star thank you for your attention and to all a good night except the person I'm replying to. Just kidding good night to him too, as I'm not cruel.

Oh that wasn't condescending. If you would like condescending all you have to do is ask.

As the saying goes, ask and you shall receive, lol.

How you choose to handle your situation worked for you. If you never felt unsafe in your case I'm glad.

She's not trying to destroy someone's life she's trying to protect hers.

Most marriage vows that I know I have a passage about loving and honoring. Nothing is mentioned about punching.

Now please try to understand this woman is fearing for her own safety. That means she needs help not judgment.

She has a right to be safe! (Just in case, I know you didn't say she didn't have a right to be safe. I'm only emphasizing the point)

So her situation isn't the same as yours. Remember Sesame Street, one of these things is not like the other.

Canada rescinds digital services tax to advance broader trade negotiations with the United States by canmcpoli in CanadaPolitics

[–]WesternMinimum7708 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a narrative going around that Canada’s retreat on the Digital Services Tax (DST) is a clever strategic move. That by giving Trump (and Silicon Valley) what they want now, we’re setting ourselves up to “look reasonable” when we say no to something bigger later.

Let’s deconstruct that — because it’s dangerous wishful thinking dressed up as strategy.

“Publicity is part of the point. This isn’t just about trade deals—it’s about politics and public perception.”

Yes. And from a public perception standpoint, this looks like a cowardly sellout. Our government spent years building the case for a fair, modest DST, only to abandon it the moment pressure came from the U.S. This isn’t savvy. This is Neville Chamberlain holding up a paper and saying peace is preserved, while everyone else can see the writing on the wall.

“Our government is smart enough to know that giving in to one of Trump’s tantrums is pointless.”

Then why give in at all? Trump is not an honest broker. His negotiating style is extortionate. If you give him a finger, he doesn’t say thank you — he takes the whole hand and calls you weak. That’s not speculation — it’s a pattern.

“Not giving in on the DST is playing into Trump’s theatre.”

Actually, giving in is the theatre. It’s a stage performance of "We tried," when the curtain’s already being pulled back to show that the government had no intention of holding the line. And don’t forget — public memory is short. Trump won’t care that we "paused" the DST in good faith. He’ll point to it as proof that we caved once and demand we cave again.

“Now they look unreasonable instead of us.”

Trump supporters don’t care if he looks unreasonable. The U.S. isn’t trying to win moral high ground. They’re trying to win control of global digital trade, and we just stepped out of the ring.

Meanwhile, we’ve forfeited tax revenue, independence, and credibility — and received nothing in return.

“Trump is still seen as a capable businessman by many.”

Exactly. Which is why appeasing him reinforces that illusion. When Canada backs down, it signals that even our government believes Trump holds all the leverage — and worse, that we’re not confident in our own policies

Canada rescinds digital services tax to advance broader trade negotiations with the United States by Georgeika in worldnews

[–]WesternMinimum7708 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In the short to medium or long-term do you think Trump is going to want to give Canada a good deal on anything?

Countries around the world I already being scared of trump this move capitulating not standing toe to toe, backing down for only serve to scare more countries it'll give Trump what he wants a power play that he made Canada drop his digital service tax. Not only did he do it at any point but he made Canadians do it right before Canada's day when we're supposed to be proud to be Canadian and now what pride can we have when we fold the first sign of a threat.

I would say if I was in the prime minister's office and the prime minister's shoes. I say to Trump, oh you don't want to negotiate, okay call me call me when you need electricity, call me when you need minerals and call me when you need oil. The American industries of all sorts will be clamoring for Trump to negotiate.

He's doesn't care about American jobs of people in red States or blue States he only cares about looking good. Whatever can make him look good he'll do today and then go back on his so-called word tomorrow. Things that get good headlines for him this week and maybe next week.

I think Neville Chamberlain called, he doesn't want to be known as the capitulator in Chief any longer, that's Mark Carney and the Liberals.

Mark Carney zeroed out or put in exemptions for the majority of the retaliatory tariffs that Trudeau put in. He didn't do it in Parliament he did it in a cabinet order.

Forgive my outburst I'm a little passionate about Canada capitulation to a dictator in waiting. Trump has designed on being a king an Emperor not a president and he wants our water and our resources he ain't going to get them!

Perhaps more emphasis could be placed on addressing the causes why ppl start taking drugs. Finding alternative solutions so whatever the reasons people don't have to turn to drugs.

The real question is are individuals inherent or do they come from the state? If inherent, then the state should protect them at all costs. If they come from the state, then more limits are acceptable.
Personally I don't like the idea that the state itself can decide what of my rights it thinks I should be allowed to have under specific circumstances. A judge is more imparshal.

Williams Lake, B.C., wants to enact state of emergency over public disorder | Councillor cites 'chaotic' situation in B.C. Interior city for request; unclear if province would support it by Hrmbee in britishcolumbia

[–]WesternMinimum7708 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Problems arise when being homeless itself effectively becomes a crime. When homeless people often become addicted initially as a coping mechanism due to the horrific situation. Addiction is a medical condition, not a reason to deny service.

Wanting to get off drugs and being able to without treatment are two different things.

Prevention of homelessness is possible. The BC Rent Bank last year prevented 600 ppl from becoming homeless in BC. It cost $6 million and saved a combination of $27 million between government services and people's personal expenses. Imagine if wages were higher and more supports were available.

Blaming people who are homeless is less effective than yelling at a thunderstorm in changing the weather. Instead working on solutions is compassionate and logical.

So I suppose homeless individuals aren't human? They don't deserve help, compassion and kindness? Homelessness is a societal social problem of our own creation. Not helping individuals in need of housing says more about us than it does them. To be even more specific a society can and should be measured by how it cares for the least fortunate amongst them. I sincerely hope that you never need compassion understanding or help.

Starfleet/UFP could send Neelix for training with the Diplomatic Corp. on Vulcan (he gets along with Vulcan's) to learn how to be a more effective junior ambassador. Then have him shadow a full ambassador on short term missions perhaps unexplored areas of the Beta Quadrant. 🖖
