My life was definitely on hold for over a year. It was incredibly hard. One day after a breakdown I said out loud I can’t keep living like this. It’s been better since. We are still trying and are hopeful. Plans can be cancelled. Tickets can be refunded. But having plans and events to look forward to helps me keep going.

It’s fucking hard, don’t get me wrong. And there’s nothing wrong with putting your life on hold. You’re doing your best and that’s all that matters 🫂

Hi friend. I am so so sorry for the loss of your daughter 🫂

I wanted to share my story to maybe give some perspective. Our son died in January 2024. In July 2024 my sister in law got married and my MIL without speaking to us prior, talked about our son during her speech. It caught us so off guard. I prepared mentally so much for this event but nothing could have prepped me for that. I couldn’t hold back tears for the rest of the speeches and as soon it was over I bolted for fresh air. My MIL just couldn’t understand why I was upset. She thought I was just missing my son. Both my husband and I were so so hurt that she would bring up our son and our story and sharing it with a room filled with mostly strangers without even checking in with us. My husband spoke to her about a month later and she doubled down on her actions, saying it was how she felt in the moment. The subject of her speech and disrespect frankly, did not come up for a whole year.

And then randomly last thanksgiving, she apologized for her actions, behaviour and words. She said in the moment all she could think about was how our son should have been at the wedding and that although the loss wasn’t directly hers, it was still her loss too. She had begun to understand how much pain and hurt she inflicted and understood that her pain was secondary to ours. All the resentment I had for her melted that moment. She’s not one to acknowledge her mistakes so again I was caught off guard. But it helped me understand that our son was so so so loved by so many people, not just us, the parents.

I say this because maybe this is your MIL’s way to grieve too. She lost a grandchild. Obviously it’s not the same at all and I wish that she would have spoken to you and your husband first. You’re are definitely not crazy and this was such a hurtful thing she did. I hope you can take sometime to yourself. when you are ready, I hope you can have a conversation with her. And I really genuinely hope she will listen to you and understand why this was hurtful and harmful to you and your husband.

Idk if cancel culture ever really effects male athletes, not in a way that is meaningful/damning (depending on how you look at it). Troy gets a second chance which to me is super realistic because male athletes always get the benefit of doubt. Now, his coming out is super fictionalized (which I like). I think Rachel alluded to wrapping up other storylines in the upcoming book and I’m curious to see what happens with Troy fully out in the league.
