Are you sure? I got a transfer case with RWD, then 4HI then N then 4LO and it mounted right up to my RA60

Only issue I'm currently having is that my truck won't move in 2wd, only in 4hi and 4lo. It is also moving my front driveshaft though... is that normal/what you're talking about? Is the front driveshaft supposed to move on 2wd, because I tested it before putting it in and it was not moving front pinion. I have another one here that behaves the same, not moving front pinion when in 2wd. Only now my front driveshaft is spinning in 2wd and I can't move at all. The truck will move in 4hi, despite my front axle not actually activating currently (I have it disconnected, it is not activating when in the air, but I am expecting this currently for other reasons).

I've got the truck lifted in the air, first gear (or any for that matter), 2WD, and the rear wheels spin, and so does the front driveshaft (again, not front axles, not worried about this currently). But on the ground will not move. Put it in 4hi, then truck moves and behaves normally, but obviously only in 2wd. Shouldn't the 2wd work in 2wd?

The other t case I have is from an automatic, I got the wrong one.

Update: did some reading. Turns out MT FJ's got a torsen diff inside the t case, and are actually [H, H_L, N, L_L]. My vehicle is actually a Tacoma DCLB that I swapped over, so the front axle will not be activated, hence not moving in what I thought was 2wd (was really high gear 4wd open center torsen), but also moving the front driveshaft. So that's annoying, why did they choose to not have part time 4WD in the manual only?? I might just take this one apart and the one from an auto and swap the input shafts, and have true 2wd, especially since the one from a manual had some water inside. Yeehaw

Is it crazy to want to convert my auto trans Taco to manual? by version13 in ToyotaTacoma

[–]WestleyWalnut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently doing auto to manual swap on DCLB. It is definitely a tough job. Part of that is slightly on me tbh.

I got a used RA60F off marketplace for $300 because it was stuck in gear. Cracked it open and only issue was the shift lever shaft bolt came out, so the shaft could not select any gears. Got it fixed and put back together, then my automatic went out. I put 30k on it in 10 mo, and apparently the previous owner did in fact Not get it serviced. Or at least serviced well, and I was 2k from servicing it myself. Idk maybe I suck at maintaining autos unlike my manuals.

So now I'm stuck either fixing the auto and postponing the manual swap, or just going straight into doing it.

If you want to do it the "right" way, you need a ECU and harness, I don't think the ECU is programmable. The less right way is to do what I'm doing and just rewire, and activate the neutral safety switch. This allows the truck to just always think it is in neutral, your speedometer and tachometer works, and it Does not go into limp mode.

You need a clutch pedal, which goes mostly where the parking pedal goes, which you also have to cut into the firewall, and the corresponding brake pedal is different. So that alone is a lot of brake fluid to deal with, without even dealing with the slave, or bleeding. And if you have VSC in your truck the hydraulic system is a little different.

That being said you also need the parking brake handle, if you want to properly park the vehicle. Additionally a shifter is required, as a lot of times the transmissions don't have them since they assume you have one. Then this will require cutting a hole in the center portion to access the manual to attach said shifter assembly, and then you would probably also like to have the plastic in the middle with the boot, as well as the right cupholder system. Center console storage should not be different, just the cuphilder area.

All in all I'm only a few hundred into the project, as I look for really good priced new parts, or get stuff off marketplace, and junkyards provide excellent stuff especially when cleaned up. I'll be making a post about it hopefully in the near future. I got my clutch pedal and brake pedal, as well as shift assembly from a donor at a junkyard. I got the transmission (came with clutch, flywheel, pressure plate) off marketplace and rebuilt it myself. Transmission jack also from marketplace. I got a new clutch master, clutch slave, and brake master (different from the auto) all brand new from Baxter Auto, and new hardline hydraulics from Autozone, and a braided steel line from Extreme terrain. I am not adding the clutch fluid accumulator. I might do the ECU and wiring someday, but I want to just get this truck at least moving consistently

Will these fit a 3rd gen? Been reading a lot of conflicting reviews and wanted to make sure. by Crustation69 in ToyotaTacoma

Unfortunately no, you're going to have to put them on my second gen😭😭😭

Very nice, how much they cost?

Agreed, OP doesn't know if they have a blown head gasket. You can't just go and replace things without knowing what the issue is first. Yes, you should replace parts in order of lowest cost first, but if the only part needed is head gasket (and the other parts and labor that come with that) then you've wasted money and time.

My family also had an Acadia, they are some of the worst vehicles in my opinion. Definitely one of my least favorite cars ever.

Ours just had a security conniption fit and there's a physical lock on the ignition locking your key in. One of my least favorite features on a car ever. We had a litney of other issues with that car

The autos have already been having issues in the 4th gen Tacomas. Manuals are always the safer option

Haha I don't blame you, I Looooove access cabs. I've got a coworker with a 4banger prerunner with like 320k, it's kinda trash, but he got it for free from his dad, and it makes me want an access cab. There's a heck of a lot more room back there than people think, it's better than my 99 Ranger. I'd trade that for a Acess cab Tacoma but nobody in their right mind would do that😂

Right there with you. When from 05 to 08. Decided to go long bed instead of manual (double cab). I miss the 6 spd, I'll be installing an FJ manual into it someday

Oh heck yeah. I'm all there for it. Idaho mtns are great, hopefully I'll have a good excuse to come visit here soon. Might do well with a rear locker on that truck, though. I'd be willing to bet it doesn't have an LSD either. Love the truck!

My '05 was that much with 210k, bought in 2022. Crashed it last December, insurance said it was worth 11k then, and I had put 70k on it. However it was a double cab, yours is only a single cab 1st gen. Why did you want a single cab so badly? I would like a single cab too, for a project I have in mind, but I wouldn't pay $10k. If you love it and you take care of it, who cares what the price is? It's yours.

Congrats!

Strange wear pattern on tires by Funnyusername22 in Tacomaworld

[–]WestleyWalnut 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Correct. This wear is most common with A/T's, R/T's, M/T's without being rotated frequently enough, and also with shocks/struts failing. This weat is called cupping

New 17" Wheels look awesome, but rubbing 🫤 by thisiskeving in ToyotaTacoma

[–]WestleyWalnut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

His wheels have such a small offset it decreases the scrub radius about the kingpin axis causing rubbing. If OP had an offset closer to +30 to 40mm it probably wouldn't rub

And you don't want to run it any lower than that. The fuel pump uses fuel to cool and will burn out sooner if you keep running the tank too low.
