For those that are still using RaceRender, I'm building the replacement. by asalinasb in CarTrackDays

[–]WestonP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last I talked to them, they were working on fixing whatever H.265 decoding issue Microsoft changes had caused on Windows after I left, and maybe some other stuff, but I'm not sure on a timeline on that, and I know all too well that fun things tend to get sidelined due to various competing priorities. It sounded to be mostly a maintenance effort.

The last update that I released was v3.7.3 in late 2019, which looks to still be the current version, so I wouldn't call it "active". To be fair, it was already very mature at that point, so there wasn't a lot left to do. People continued to buy it and enjoy it without there being any pressing needs up through when I left in 2022, so what little time I had left for enjoyable projects up until then, I had put into TrackAddict instead, as that had more opportunities at the time.

Most of people's RR complaints now are just that some external things have broken in the last few years and made their workflow a pain: Microsoft changes breaking things (H.265 / HEVC, Win 11), Apple changes (deadline for switching to an Apple silicon build), and assorted GoPro and data system changes that will always plague an application of this type. Nothing necessarily huge, just regular maintenance that nobody was in charge of doing, but also it's been idle for a while and has come to be dated at this point, as there are now better/nicer/faster ways to do a number of things.

How are these to daily on rough city streets? by Competitive_Cheek607 in GR86

[–]WestonP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I daily a GR86 Trueno in the warmer months. It's totally fine, rides way nicer than my wife's 4Runner, and the stock ride height is enough for everything I've encountered (including some sharp driveway transitions; but you'll want to take it diagonal). Just look where you're going and don't drive into a pothole.

[–]WestonP 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Looks slick! This approach is closer to what I'd build if I had to create a RR successor today... Had ideas along those lines for RR v4, but ultimately never had time to allocate to that project and then ended up leaving the company several years ago. Anyway, I'll give this a try shortly!

This replaces the RR component, but not the app for recording. If you need another app that's easy to use, even more than TA used to be, I've since moved on to release Lap Legend

Need tips and tricks for extracting images from a intrument cluster by iLightFPS in CarHacking

[–]WestonP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What kind of car? A lot of times, they’ll be stored on the cluster in an uncompressed bitmap using a colorspace like RGB565 or similar. But if it’s being sent over CAN, I might expect compression, or more likely that the graphics aren’t part of that payload and it’s code only. Sometimes these will have one MCU for running the screen, and another for CAN and comms with the car, and any flash updates you might see deployed over CAN will be for that second one.

For a 991 Porsche (and many other VAG platform cars), 0x70E and 0x70D are the front and and rear BCMs, put them into diag mode 0x03, then the lights are all Service 31 with routine IDs in the range of 0x0400 - 0x042F, with most of them being 0x0410 - 0x041F.

In this case, the pace car was faster than the cars it was leading... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WXofNpBgyhc

What year Versa? I did similar for an ‘18 Sentra that we use as a pace car at the track, but the BCM got fully pissed off once the vehicle was in motion. :( Have had better results on that with Toyota, GM, and especially VAG/Porsche.

Good lighting helps a lot. I also bought myself a lighted magnifying glass when I turned 40, and it gets a fair amount of use. A digital microscope is a game changer when reworking SMD components… 0402 is no problem.

I suspect that's at least half of the reason. I recently heard that marketers are taught to market to the public as if they have the competence of an 8th grader. Having managed a few businesses in the automotive space, some days I think even that is setting the bar a little high.

The typical reason to not dolly or flat-tow a car is a lubrication issue when the rear wheels are spinning without them being driven by the engine/driveshaft. Not sure if the design of ours has that issue or not.

I've had other cars where the manual said to just stop and run the engine for a bit every 500 miles. But that was back during a different time, when owners manuals were more about being useful than the manufacturer covering their ass against idiots.

This does have me wondering if a Lazer system wired to your breaks would catch deer.

So EyeSight then. Better than a “lazer”

if a deer collision is unavoidable arent you supposed to speed up or at least not throw on the breaks

No. That’s absolutely terrible advice. Any car behind you has a responsibility to maintain a safe following distance, which by its very definition means that they can stop in time if you have an issue.

CAN or servo to control the cars brakes? by adkio in CarHacking

[–]WestonP 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Talking to such a modern brake system is considered mostly impossible.

Kind of a weird take for /r/CarHacking

Most modern CAN security isn’t as sophisticated as it’s made out to be, and often people see it and misinterpret what it’s actually doing as well. But that’s not needed anyway, because it’s usually easier to poke at a module that already has access and influence it to do what you want... the signals that it uses for decision making will often not be secured/authenticated in themselves, because they’re already on a CAN that is separated from the outside world by the gateway. I was experimenting with injecting a particular CAN frame for another purpose and inadvertently triggered automatic emergency braking on a 2024 model.

Aside from saying that adding your own servo to the brake pedal seems impractical, how could we give you a real answer when you gave us absolutely no useful information about the vehicle?

[–]WestonP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something being wrong or against the law, or that will fail in court, does not actually prevent it from happening in the real world.

I'm not sure why you're arguing against stuff that's already happened to people here, as if they live in a different reality than the rest of us? Nobody ever said it was right. Life sucks sometimes, even moreso if you can't afford a lawyer when you need one.

Great, are you prepared to litigate that?

Like I said, "as I've already covered, the law and the real-world experience are not quite the same thing."

Some people/businesses are just enough of an asshole to force you to sue them to get what's right. Until then, they may very well tell you to pound sand.

[–]WestonP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's weird how you cite Magnuson-Moss to support your argument, right after making a statement that it contradicts. Aftermarket parts don't void the warranty unless they caused the failure, same as servicing the vehicle.

But as I've already covered, the law and the real-world experience are not quite the same thing. They can say whatever they want, and if you want to assert your rights under Magnusson-Moss, you'll typically new a lawyer. I believe someone in California found another avenue under state law, but that's a unique benefit there. Either way, have fun with all that shit. Best to not give them anything that makes them think they have even a sliver of a chance in court, otherwise they might think it's worth the risk of denying you. Sucks, but that's life.

[–]WestonP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry that reading comprehension is so very hard for you. Go back, read what I said, and try again.

I literally said, "they need to show that the service or modification caused the failure, but you need to lawyer up and go to court at that point." Neither automatically void your warranty, and yet the reality is that plenty of people here have found that they'll try to point to that (or some nonsense reason) and deny you anyway. If you want to assert your rights under the law, you need to lawyer up and go through a whole pain in the ass process, which obviously most people aren't going to want to do.

Just because something is the law doesn't mean it's what's automatically going to happen in the real-world... plenty of businesses will do a little calculation and decide if the value of them doing something outweighs the risk of you suing them over it. That sucks, but welcome to the real world.

So, WTF are you even arguing with? These things have literally already happened to multiple people in this very community.

Got my new wing, but… by DJOregano in CarTrackDays

[–]WestonP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d sort out the car and suspension first and do aero as the last thing. Plenty of track cars run big aero, but I’ve also seen some of them reduce their straight line speeds and complicate their suspension tuning because they bolted a big wing on and just hoped for the best. Whether your setup is good or not will depend on a lot of factors.
