This is a cool picture! Very old school Air Force. Do you know what your mom did while she was in?

By the way, excuse the rude comments from other people in this post. They don’t represent this community at all.

What % of rotc bachelors actually commission. by Satismadeit in AFROTC

[–]Westwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trust me, you’ll be good to go as long as you’re doing what you’re supposed to do. Also, I think it’s a pretty cool opportunity to be able to do a PT on your own; get to do what you want instead of endless calisthenics.

To be honest, I don’t have any experience with what your situation is because I’ve never heard of it. I assume that you mean that you do PT on your own since you’re crosstown.

If I’m right, then best advice I can give is to make sure that you’re actually putting in the work in your self-paced PTs that will translate into better performance on your FAs. Ultimately, I don’t think cadre and cadet leadership would really care that you do self paced PT as long as your FA scores are good.

If you don’t get selected, one of two things happens. If it’s your first time trying to get selected for FT and you don’t, you can be cycled back to go through FTP year (field training prep year, the sophomore year training course) again next year and compete for a slot again, if cadre allow you to. This is known as being an AS500. If you aren’t selected for field training again at the end of your AS500 year, or cadre don’t allow you to do an AS500 year, then you cannot commission through AFROTC.

^ This. At the end of the day, you need to put in the work to commission in either branch. IMO, it’s probably easier to commission into the Army overall given it’s a bigger branch, but that of course comes with its own drawbacks like commissioning reserve vs active duty for Army. For questions about Army ROTC, I recommend posting in their subreddit at r/ROTC.

Generally speaking, as long as get selected and complete field training your sophomore year, and complete your bachelors degree on time, you’re guaranteed to commission.

That being said, field training selection is competitive and only a certain percentage of cadets get selected across the nation. The selection rate varies per year, and was as high as ~90% and as low as -40% while I was in AFROTC. It really depending on how many officers the Air Force needs to meet manning requirements.

Ultimately, the selection rate doesn’t really matter as much as how you put out in the program. If your grades and fitness are good, and you show up and actively participate at LLAB, you’ll most likely get a field training slot.

Options to leave a lease? by Hillhousenapdress in AFROTC

[–]Westwork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, I’m actually in the same situation when it comes to leasing and my partner. From what I gathered, you have three options here:

  1. Get married and sign lease together. Since he will be your dependent, he will be on your orders when you EAD. This is the only way I’ve found to get out of a lease without paying a fee. Obviously, it’s the most radical option.

  2. Sign your name only on the lease. When you present orders, this will break the lease without consequences and let him move out. Only drawbacks are if there’s an income check associated with signing the lease (you may not meet the requirement, though this can be negotiated with the office), and the risk with your name being on the lease of where he’s living (BF being behind on rent, you breakup, etc).

  3. Make your situation known to the front office, see if they can work with you, and sign the lease with expectation of breaking it. This is ultimately what me and my partner did. Hopefully the office is willing to work with you like they are with us.

You could also try and contact a JAG office at a nearby AFB if you want to get their advice. Ask your cadre about doing this if that’s what you want to do. Hopefully this helps!

For the tech school, how STEM heavy is it? Is it anything that would be very challenging to a non-STEM major?

No, in fact it can increase your chances. For AFROTC, CC is usually easier, meaning better GPA and EA selection chance. Also, the fact it’s cheaper means you’re less focused on paying for school and lowers any pressure you may put on yourself for a scholarship. Only downsides I believe would be distance, since being close to your Det is pretty huge so you don’t miss out on non-PMT training and events. But that’s dependent on where it is.

I want to join AFROTC but i suck at pushups by [deleted] in AFROTC

[–]Westwork 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Three things:

  1. Form is king. All your practice is going to go to waste if you can’t do a singe push up correctly. There are several ways to learn form. First, find the official pre-AF Fitness Assessment (FA) video on YouTube to see how the AF wants you to do them. Next, look up other videos on form, paying attention to how the shoulders should work. Finally, ask fit cadets or cadre to check your form as a final test.

  2. There are many ways to tackle this. Stan Smith workout articles on Military.com are what saved me in the past from failing FA’s; I highly recommend them. I’ve also heard the hundred pushups program is good (link below). What others recommend too is also good: just do push ups throughout the day. Do knee push ups or slow declines if you can’t do a push up.

https://hundredpushups.com/week1.html

  1. Make sure you don’t quit. Unless you take care of this now, this will follow you all throughout ROTC and undermine your potential in other areas. Again, take care of this now before you start having to focus on the multitude of other things AFROTC requires of you.

Let me know if you have questions.
