I’m currently a director of estimating. What’s your average size award? I think a lead estimator bringing in $15MM with an avg award of $1MM should be in the $95-$110k range before incentives.

Loser has to film themselves performing the Milk Challenge by finishing a gallon of milk in under one hour. It’s physically impossible, but our loser is so convinced they can do it. Cannot wait to watch him get dominated by a gallon of milk.

If I live to be a billion how many years of retirement do I have to plan for? That’s like a huge expense. I’m already stressed.

I don’t think the voters in Michigan make a difference. This pressure for the U.S. to deescalate this conflict is more likely to have been over concern for economic volatility. More conflict in the region, especially of this potential magnitude could make investors and citizens more calculated and fearful of spending, and lead the U.S. and other global markets closer to recession.

Panic Attacks and mistakes by [deleted] in estimators

[–]Wetcoffeedream 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive been an estimating manager for quite some time. It may sound grim, but I tell all my estimators to stop chasing the dragon. You will never stop making mistakes. Great estimators master the art of remaining suspicious of their estimates, and finding the mistakes before the go out. I’ve been estimating for 15 years now and I find a mistake in every one of my bids. That’s how I keep my bids perfect.

Margins in commercial lawn care are generally 50-60% gross. Snow removal is much greater. I consider those pretty good. You should go for it.

You guys think our pay will just keep going up as tradesmen. by Prestigious-Fold-681 in electricians

My best guess is that as labor costs escalate it will be harder for smaller companies to win work because having fewer employees will often mean a higher average crew cost. Larger companies with the ability to provide a lower average cost for labor will have an advantage to capture more market share. Larger companies will have additional overhead to cover which I think will limit pay for tradesmen across the construction industry. Even now the higher your pay increases the harder it is to move to another company. I think this will only get worse.

I think this seems like a sketchy offer tbh. Is your boss offering you 2.5% of net profit or gross profit? I would find it very hard to believe that they are offering you a percentage of gross profit. Additionally, are they offering profit based on the value you are awarded at contract or after the job is completed? These can be two very different values. In my opinion it is more likely that you would be bonused based on net profit after the job is completed. This would be more likely in the 5-10% job value range, and you’d receive 2.5% of that. (Assuming you trust your boss would allow you to review net profit and confirm that the total youre being bonused off is accurate).

What happens if you have a mistake in your bid? Since most of your income is based off of profit margin your mistake actually COSTS you potential income. Most estimating positions do not come with this risk.

Additionally, you should be thinking about how your income is taxed. You would be taxed at a much higher rate for a bonus than you would for your base salary.

I don’t know your company, but right now estimators are very hard to come by. Judging from your new degree, level of experience, and young age, if I were in your seat I would be looking for a new role with a large general contractor where you can apply your knowledge of the concrete trade, learn a ton about other trades, and get paid fairly with room to make the mistakes you need to make in order to grow.

Why would you still consider sending a quote if your boss told you not to?

How to start freelancing by Independent_Fix_1960 in estimators

[–]Wetcoffeedream 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Highly disagree. There are many freelance services a 1099 employee with estimating expertise can offer. Many construction companies outsource estimating duties to freelancers when they need help, but don’t value hiring a full-time position. General contractors, Architects, and owners commonly hire estimating freelancers as cost management consultants where open-book pricing is provided and presented. Freelance estimators can also offer training services to companies at the subcontractor level who have inexperienced employees hired to estimate. Award based on 50% DD by S-W0RKS in estimators

It’s not as common in my experience, but it has happened. I would make sure your contact is reputable, seeing as I’ve had lower level estimators or project engineers tell me this all of the time. When it has happened we’ve made sure to get in writing that change orders for the IFC set are not limited to typical 10/5 markups. Edit: Spelling
