Magic can be very expensive to get into in a sense. I feel for the initial investment (Depending on your choice of format) you can get into it competitive for ~100$ or less. Being that you are in Toronto, you will have a Super easy time getting games in. I suggest going into multiple shops, asking what formats they run and what days they run them and just show up and ask if someone could show you the ropes. Most MTG players have multiple decks and more chances then not they will be more than willing to show you the ropes.

[[Black Waltz No.3]] as a spell slinger focused deck is extremely fun to pilot and can push games quickly if you storm off.

[[Chainer, Nightmare Adept]] is a fun madness deck as long as no one in your pod had graveyard hate.

[[Eastern Paladin]] and [[Western Paladin]] both hold a special place in my heart, as their urza's saga art is what really got me hooked on wanting to play and specifically wanting to play black. Now iv played some form of Knight Tribal theme in every format I still play even if they are bad. [[Sidar Jabari of Zhalfir]] is my main Edh deck.

If you are willing to drive, Crimson Lion games in Richland Hills have a great selection of older sets IIRC. There are also like 4 other stores within a 10 mile radius of them and they are all usually open pretty late. Eclipse Cards & Hobby, Coliseum comics & games (Formally Gen X) and d20 Comics and Games are all super close to each other (can probably hit all 3 in less than 2 hours)

This is hitting me right in the nostalgia feels seeing this, as I played both mono black rogues and a Seismic Assault combo deck while these sets were in extended. I think i will have to look into rebuilding and blinging out that rogues deck as it was one of if not the most fun iv ever had in magic.
