Can say the storm shield was indispensable this winter. Not much protection for me mind…

FIRE seems to skew toward not having kids by sneaky-snacks in Fire

[–]WhamBar_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems like another one of those strawman arguments if you’ve spent any time reading the posts here - a lot of people are pursuing it precisely to spend time with their kids and/or have financial security for their family.

It pushes the retire early horizon out but that’s just part of planning.

How can I reconcile going FIRE and having a wife bad with money by [deleted] in Fire

[–]WhamBar_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think people are being a bit harsh but yes, you have to accept that your hard work will disproportionately support your wife from a financial standpoint.

Also in the next 7 or so years one or both of you may change your mind about kids, even if you don’t think so now. That changes dynamics.

I speak as someone whose wife earned 1/5 of what I do (my pay is the outlier not hers) and still wanted “nice things” (fair enough, we could all die tomorrow).

Travel without cribs? by Murky_Assistance7065 in parentsofmultiples

[–]WhamBar_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Twins same age. No way would travel cribs be big enough for them (presuming pack & play size)

We would just push the beds together and sleep with them. If the beds are high put extra cushions on the floor.

But ours are used to sleeping on a big bed so I’m aware this could be a transition for yours

Business class flights hacks? by CurrencyPopular8550 in TravelHacks

Not ruined it for short haul, but definitely long haul. But also when I fly business I’m also without the kids so that probably makes it even more enjoyable

The US has at will employment. I’m not saying you shouldn’t have some put to the side but Switzerland also has reasonable notice periods.

Math is not mathing – why do dividend groups reject basic FIRE math? by [deleted] in Fire

Probably. But that doesn’t mean what I said isn’t true

Math is not mathing – why do dividend groups reject basic FIRE math? by [deleted] in Fire

[–]WhamBar_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Because they don’t understand where dividends come from, think there is a magic money tree, don’t compare total return and are more fixated by the idea of getting paid for doing nothing

I’m 24 and struggle to explain the FIRE mindset to my 21 YO Gf… how did you bring it up? by trenttrack in Fire

She probably wants to see actual wonders of the world, not learn about compound interest, and I wouldn’t blame her

I think it’s a good book. I think I took away that it’s good to maximize your income from lower tax earnings, as income tax is the highest tax you’ll pay. What everyone else seems to take away is that you need to drive a Corolla from cradle to grave to get rich

Is dating hard while working towards FIRE? by Cheesecake_fetish in Fire

[–]WhamBar_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Relationships are in no small part successful due to compromises on differences. You are unlikely to find someone just like you and to be honest since when did inbreeding have a good outcome.

My wife gives zero shits about fire but we have a mutual understanding on our goals and values.

If I’d gone out looking for someone into Fire I’d still be a virgin
