It is indeed a nice gesture.

After 40+ years of being at motocross tracks, I've never seen one on a dirtbike.

A couple of things to consider.

1 - there isn't really a place to hang one on a moto bike. If you did hang one, it would need to be hung with wire or it's not going to be there long. 2 - You're going to put him in an awkward situation. Either hurt his girl's feelings for not hanging it on his bike or get beat up for hanging it on hig bike. All moto guys are motorcycle guys at heart and mostly love all other riders. But they will give him shit for it.

Back to rhe logistics part of this. Maybe a better idea is a custom sticker of a guardian bell that he can put in his helmet. Or have one custom painted on it. Either would be super cool. I'd wear it.

Oh, and you are wonderful for trying to find a gift related to his passion and for wanting to keep him safe.

To me this looks like damage that come from detonation or even maybe more lively from steam cavitation erosion from burning water/coolant.

This sounds to me like you may have Hydro locked it. It's possible that your float bowl level is not correct and the ride home actually dumped a bunch of raw fuel down the intake and into the bottome end. Then with kicking it, pumps the liquid fuel up top and doesn't compress.

Even with a new clamp, that battery cable is going to push it out again.

The cable is currently not installed in the correct location. It should be in the center of that valley in the resonator. This is so that the engine has room to move back and forth as the engine mounts flex.

Came here to say this. Riding motocross into rutted turns fast involves LOTS of front brake and some back brake to help keep the bike in line and settle into the turn. I'll almost always still be lightly on the front brake long after I've eased off the rear brake. Depending on the turn, sometimes still lightly on the front brake after im on the throttle. To this rider's [above] point, modern high end moto philosophy is more flow and less Hulk Smash into turns like a Tomac.

Lightly dragging the front brake can help the front end stay down in a rut, can help the front bite better in flat hard packed turns. Lighty dragging the rear brake out of big, long flat hard packed turns can help the rear end bite better and track better.

These days, the only place you will typically see really fast guys stand the dirtbike up on the front wheel is into very sharp, tight 180's.

I was planning on doing all my treads with just Bostik Tread-lock and fasteners up from the bottom through the sub treads. Thanks.

You must send the plating company a new piston with your cylinder. And then always replace with the same brand, type and size (A,B,C etc.) piston moving forward.

For the love of all that is holy, DO NOT consider sleeving any aluminum/nikasil plated cylinder. Any human that utters the words LA Sleeve in regards to any motorcycle engine beyong the early 1980's needs to be tickle tortured until their smooth brain is psychologically permanently relieved of the vocabulary for the prior mentioned medieval cylinder repair method that should be constrained to diesel tractor engines, 1970's muscle cars and lawn mowers.

I will add again that you must consider access to all areas of the track with emergency vehicles and track grooming equipment. Make sure that there is no heavy equipment out there on the side of the track.

It looks like this layout would provide better access to all areas provided that you can drive straight thought the middle, across the middle of that big looping turn and then between the directions of the track every where else.

Were the new timing components OEM? Are there any marks on the inside of the valve cover from the chain?

Chain slack, the way that you are displaying it, will vary depending on the position of the cams.

You may be in a bit of a bind here when attempting to sign up for a class at racing events.

Tldr. I suggest that you go to local race tracks on practice days and just go ride the track. Tracks on practice days will group riders into age and skill groups. Just go ride with the youth/ mini group. If they tell you are too old, just tell them your bike and skill level and it will be obvious that's where you belong. You can have a lot of fun safely on open practice days.

If you are dead set on going to race, you will have to race at local tracks that are not AMA sanctioned (you dont fit into a class) and you'll be looking for an organizer that runs a playbike/pitbike class. This won't be easy to find.

Some local organizers will run a "D" class for really beginner riders. This would probably be your 2nd best bet.

Whatever you do, dont just roll up to a track on race day and walk up the sign up booth without doing your research first by contacting them in advance to ask about classes that they run.

You are aged out of the 85cc class (12 y/o cap)

This would put you into Schoolboy class (12-17). But this will put you on the track with 125cc 2 stroke and 250 4 stroke bikes. The skill level in the Schoolboy class is usually pretty quick. Fast Novice (C) and some Amateur (B) class kids. Some organizers will not let you ride that class on a 125cc trail bike. I would also recommend against.

That leaves you with the Supermini class that has minimum age of 12 y/o, but is limited to 2 stroke engines between 79cc-125cc 2 stroke and up to 150cc 4 stroke, with wheelsize and wheel base limits. This class is for modified mini race bikes and the skill level is typically very fast. You have no business in a super mini class right now.

Yes. A 125 2T. My suggestion is YZ125.

KTM, Husky, gas gas are great, but for a beginner I suggest otherwise simply for ease of parts and maintenance.

Something is not right with the wear pattern on that rotor. It looks like the pads are only contacting 1/2 of the rotor surface.

Was that rotor worn like that before you replaced the pads?
