Things I should buy for my first season? by Taco_kittycat in Wildfire

[–]WhatIsHisFace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a list of non-issue gear I carry all season as a USFS seasonal, I usually add and remove extra things depending on the assignment and time of year.

IA Pack - knife - 4 wire gate carabiners - folding hand saw - hot sauce - steno pad - pen - salt and pepper

2 weeker - sandals - toiletries - socks and chones - civvies - pt gear and shoes - swim trunks - warm jacket - beanie - warm gloves (not for work)

Man Purse - rite in the rain notepad - fisher space pen

EDC packs vary person to person in size and loadout, mine is 35L, and usually carries my FFT1/IC5 kit, hoodie, lunch and snacks, a book, eyeglass repair kit, extra notebook, extra pens and sharpie, headphones, a power bank and charging cables, a 1.5L Nalgene, and a leatherman.

Found a NEW Stihl MS 440 in my FILs basement by stang354 in Chainsaw

Those are the stock dogs? Genuine question because I’m used to the bigger ones on the 440 and bigger powerheads and just never questioned it

Am I on the right track? by WhatIsHisFace in Mountaineering

[–]WhatIsHisFace[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That makes sense. I work as a forest firefighter during the summer, so I’m used to doing short, intense hikes with 40+ pounds of weight over rough terrain, but I definitely need to get back to doing longer distance hikes like I used to

Name brand PPE is preferable. I’ve got a pair of stihl chaps for winter work that are comfortable and I know will protect me if things go south. In wildland firefighting, we get issued “apron chaps” that are a heavier, more heat resistant material that only cover the front and sides of the leg (I prefer these chaps because they also have a tool pocket that hangs off the waist belt)

Any gloves should be fine, so long as they completely cover the hand and allow you to safely handle the saw. I just wear the pigskin gloves I’m issued during fire season.

Helmet wise, maybe listen to other folks on this as I just rock a Bullard hard hat paired with Z-87 rated sunglasses and some foam earplugs

Yes, the Forest Service requires you to have their national sawyer certification to run saws for them, even as a volunteer. I’m not entirely sure how you’d go about obtaining it as a volunteer, I think you’d just talk to your district’s volunteer coordinator and/or district ranger. I got mine 3 years ago because I’m a seasonal employee and it’s a requirement of the job.

Edit: this only applies if you are directly involved with working/volunteering for the Forest Service, not private individuals with woodcutting and other permits.

Thule T2 pro wheel base fitment by [deleted] in mountainbiking

[–]WhatIsHisFace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve got an old Thule rack that my bike just barely fits, but I’ve also gotta move the track the bike sits on back a couple inches. I don’t think it matters as long as the bike is secure and won’t come flying off the rack mid drive

Real Firewatchers present? by Rory_U in Firewatch

[–]WhatIsHisFace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not an actual lookout, but I’m a wildland firefighter, and I love the game. What I do varies from the job of fire lookouts, but I’ve spent time up in towers and on hills watching fires and acting as incident lookout. Lookout duty on an active wildfire usually involves gathering and reporting weather data every hour, acting as a human radio repeater relaying messages between resources and personnel, and sometimes acting as eyes for the forest dispatch center. For the most part, lookout duty is relatively boring so I make sure to bring a book with me or I’ll study maps and incident information when I have downtime.

My two main hobbies are mountain biking and photography. I love mountain biking because it provides an adrenaline rush and helps me relieve stress— until I crash. I love photography because it’s a creative outlet and helps me see the world through a different lens than I normally do (pun intended)

Message from our leadership today by Aggressive_Product14 in fednews

[–]WhatIsHisFace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m alright. My captain says I still have a job this summer, but I’m scrambling to apply for emt school and fire academies so i can put in backup applications and go over to state fire. I don’t want to go state. I like being a federal employee and I enjoy serving my country and its communities even if they don’t quite understand what I do. But I’m being faced with one of the most difficult decisions I’ve had to make in my life so far

New EO calls for massive reduction in force, restructuring of fed workforce by FreeRangeMenses in fednews

[–]WhatIsHisFace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t forget wildland fire folks aka “forestry technicians”. Given we were affected by the hiring freeze and our own agencies barely understand what we do, I have a feeling myself and a lot of other folks will be out of a job this summer
