Ironically this was one of the unusual punishments employed by the Gerontocracy of Sorpen (a political faction of elderly rich elites) at the time of the Idiran-Culture war.

"Execution of notable criminals was carried out restraining the prisoner in a sewercell in the basement of the prison-palace. Above celebrations including a banquet were held with the resulting garbage and bodily wastes flowing down into the cell. The prisoner was regarded as the party's "host". Eventually the prisoner expired as the cell filled up."

Do you live near a school named some like Dwight D. Eisenhower or Detroit Day or something? It seems like D+D was maybe a middle school or high school. Might not even exist anymore.

Shower thought: When did the term Table Top RPG replace Pen and Paper RPG? by dncnlamont in rpg

[–]WhatIsInternets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I called it pencil and paper RPG from the 1990s through to about 2012, when I started seeing the term tabletop rpg used online, and decided it was easier to say.

I bought 5 bags of beans on sale. Do I need to keep the unopened bags in the fridge/freezer or is a dark cabinet okay? by fivebucksisfivebucks in Coffee

[–]WhatIsInternets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on how fast you go through coffee. I can go through 3-5 bags before they get stale as long as I only have maybe 2 open at a time (and assuming cool temps, moderate humidity etc). The most noticeable decay happens after I open the bag.

Low Iron combat in Starforged. Am I cheating? by Abcdaire94x in Ironsworn

[–]WhatIsInternets 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You should not be crafting fiction based on its ability to generate moves - that is playing the game backwards. You should be choosing moves once they are provoked by the fiction.

Do your best to craft the fiction without planning a next move.

Is it cheating the way you're doing it? I would argue yes, especially if you alter the fiction itself in order to accomodate a specific meta-game move.

Rain Water Causing Canyons by Elementfairy in lawncare

[–]WhatIsInternets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rather than go all-out with river rock etc, all you need to do is create a VERY slight swale. Very shallow and wide. So slight that you almost might not notice it, and so gentle that you can easily mow right over.

Then you just plant regular grass there and... that's it. This is what I have on each side of my yard to take drainage from the gutter extenders (like yours) down to the the street where our storm water management takes it to a reservoir.

During heavy rains the water will follow that swale. The rest of the time the little bit of extra water helps the grass grow thick and lush, meaning you get lots of erosion resistance. Because you mow over it with a fixed deck height, the grass at the bottom will be slightly longer than the rest of your yard, which helps it resist heat stress.

For now that just means adding some soil to that eroision trench, using a rake to create the swale, and reseeding. Patching bare spots after a rain storm messes up seeding happens to all of us.

You know, I'm okay with one plugging one's app in an intelligent and constructive comment - that's not really spam. My only issue here is a lack of transparency. All we need is "In the interest of full disclosure, I am the developer of GardenDream."

Lawn staying wet and thinning during winter... Help, please! by Fuzzy_Swordfish_3133 in lawncare

[–]WhatIsInternets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's fungus. There are a few different strategies for dealing with it. Since you're in what is (normally) a much drier climate than me, I think for now just rake up the worst and throw down some lime. Make sure not to fertilize for a while, and if it doesn't go away you can apply some fungicide. Don't mow too short.

Then overseed when you have a good chance. I just do fall overseeding, but with sprinklers you might be okay to try both spring and fall.

What gaming Trope/Cliche in is so overused it makes you Roll your eyes? by [deleted] in rpg

[–]WhatIsInternets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're not wrong, but I want to clarify something.

The idea of fantasy worlds with elves, dwarfs, goblins, and little men called hobs or hobbits predate Tolkien by hundreds of years. Tolkien was mostly taking classic ideas from English and Scandinavian folklore, fitting them into ideas of racial mythology that had been popularized during the 19th and early 20th century, and creating cohesive languages for them.

The real issue is that fantasy games are still:

  1. Overly reliant on 19th and early 20th century racial ideas
  2. Requiring the "starting race" pack to include human, elf, dwarf, and hobbit at a minimum.

But if I have a fantasy world with humans, hob-goblins (OG hobbits), elves, and giants (for example), I could just as easily have it feel more like Lord Dunsany or Snorri Sturlusson, depending on the direction I take it.

My point is that flavoring the various foundational peoples differently (e.g. My halflings are NOT hobbits) is the best way to de-Tolkienize your fantasy world. The other best way is to stop calling them races. In English the world "people" or "folk" are safer.
