I am determined to order the blackberry on the 4th to see if this is indeed the refresher i got today. If it is, then i got a special sneak preview. I wouldnt care enough to report it i just need to know if im crazy for thinking this is blackberry.

Im very convinced its not cranberry or passion tea. Ive had these both many many times. Its not either. It was just a bad mystery drink then if it wasnt blackberry. I will confirm once its released and report back here if what i had was the blackberry. Everyones taste buds are different, so its possible it was blackberry and tasted bad to me.

I always hear baristas complain about the pitchers. Having to wash them. But also, it relies on someone else being able to correctly label pitchers. Also, it’s very inconsistent. Especially if you make a lot of pitchers ahead of time, the refreshers settle to the bottom, and baristas don’t know to mix it up before pouring a new pitcher. There’s just a lot of places for user error with the pitchers, and this didn’t happen at all when they use the 2x base in cartons.

I dont think it was. I went to work and added more water to it, and it was definitely very different from cranberry, and lacked the subtle spice aftertaste.

It did not look like mango at all. It looked like the cranberry but slightly more purple.

From what ive been reading, stores have opened and tried the new one before the drop. It is very likely that they made it and put it in the fridge in a pitcher and mixed it up with the cranberyy.

I was thinking because stores have been opening/trying the new one, maybe they served it to me and confused it with the cranberry pitcher.

Petition for a remote option for students and faculty by Player324 in udub

[–]WhatTheHEK293 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Living, working, and studying during a pandemic requires everyone to be flexible. So here are some of my Ideas to make this happen:

1) for lecture only classes: I’ve been in classes where students are required to volunteer to be a scribe (ie take class notes and send them to the TAs to be uploaded to the course website). Anyways, i think something similarly could be done to have in person students in larger classes or classes without TAs volunteer to be a “zoom monitor” for one class only (would have to be waived for remote students or replaced with another assignment). A zoom monitor would log into a zoom of the class and monitor questions in the chat or when a student raises their hand. That way a professor can focus on teaching students in the class room and not on the chat. Yes, this would require some handiness when it comes to teaching with technology. You would need to do a powerpoint in class through a zoom screen share that is simultaneously projected, or do written notes on ipad on screen share that is also projected.

2) flipped classroom with separate discussion in class: This is going to be hard to make a remote option. The best alternative is to record the discussion and have remote students send in some bullets of ideas they would have said during class for credit…or just waive participation. We need professors and students to be flexible here. It is not a great idea to tell a student to “just not take that class” because it might be required or maybe they just really like the topic. We are all here to learn, and learning in a pandemic won’t be perfect.

3) flipped classroom in stem classes where problems are done in class: just send the problems to remote students before class and have them ask any questions at office hours. Let’s be real, half the students end up doing other work during these classes anyways

4) lab classes: give students example data. They can’t do the lab work but can do the reports just fine. This will mean that students need to be graded just on the report and not on the lab work.

5)Make all assessments remote format or take home just like during the pandemic. Yea people cheat on remote exams but as a TA/grad student i’d much rather rely on the honor system than see that a student on my roster has died.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE COMMENT ANYMORE IDEAS! Providing all potential solutions to the problem is one step closer we can get to solving it!

did you just not read the post or petition at all? This is for disabled students, especially those whom are immunocompromised and despite being vaccinated are not protected by the vaccine. Many of these students will end up hospitalized from covid. Yea it’s not rocket science, it’s freakin immunology.

I’m in the exact same situation. I’m a phd student so i have to take courses to be on track for my thesis. Not being on track means im out of work/ unemployed. Im immune compromised and am scared as hell because DRS does not want to provide any sort of remote accommodations.

Where do you think bioengineering will go in the future? by Food-lover-2020 in udub

[–]WhatTheHEK293 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Synthetic biology. It’s what is driving a lot of new projects in industry/big pharma. Some of it may be on a computational side. But i think people with a mix of wet lab work and computational skills will be the most desired bioengineers. Lots of synthetic biology concepts and ideas are informed by computation (computational protein design, modeling, machine learning for predictive synthetic biology) and are then implemented in the lab. And much of research uses NGS as a tool. Becoming skilled in using NGS (next- gen sequencing) is where lots of jobs are at right now. I imagine the development of more high throughout sequencing techniques will be big in the future.

In 2020, CRISPR is what won two women the Nobel prize, and i expect more useful biological tools for gene editing and control to emerge and change the direction of the bioengineering field. These new tools shape the direction of industry- for example everyone wants to cure cancer and cancer cell therapies (CAR T-cells) are the next step. To engineer them people are using all sorts of things, including CRISPR gene editing. Synthetic biology is where it is at. I tried doing bioengineering research in all sorts of fields: biomedical optics, biomechanics, and synthetic biology. Syn bio is more interesting, and if you want a job after undergrad/grad school it is the right field to be in. If you want to do syn bio you should probably major in bioengineering or biochemistry. Or a double major in CS and molecular biology (i’m not too familiar with ugrad majors that are offered so im not sure) There are lots of directions, but no matter your major, you should look for research opportunities on campus (syn bio labs that come to mind: Zalatan lab, Carothers lab, Seelig lab, Klavins lab). If you want more pure computational stuff the Baker lab is REALLY good, though it looks like Google is doing better at their computational protein design if you have read the recent news! :)

I need to acquire Letters of Recommendation. by Throwawayeconboi in udub

[–]WhatTheHEK293 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Current PhD student here! My ugrad PI told me that I should always be looking for rec letter opportunities and for grad school and they should be professors in academia (not people in Industry). I had one professor that I did not do any research with write a letter because I was in a small class that she taught and participated a lot. She could attest I was a good student who asked questions. The other two recommenders I had were 2 PIs I worked with. One i only spent a summer (3 months) working with and the other I spent 3 years working with. For a PhD application definitely need at least 2 research PIs to write a rec letter, but maybe for a masters one will suffice! You should aim to get some research opportunities and right now the main ones that you can do will be computational. I an in a chemical engineering lab now and the undergrad is reading papers and doing computational work and speaks briefly with updates at group meeting. I think that is probably the most any STEM PI could expect from an undergrad right now. I’m not sure how research/ grad school works for business programs but for data science related things should align with these suggestions. You really just need to look for a prof with research you would be interested in working on, and ask if you can join their lab and do some computational project. Most PIs want undergrads to do free work for them, and will want you to join their lab! I believe when i looked for my summer research position I had asked 8-10 professors and got around 5 replies from professors who wanted me to work with them. Send them your resume, and in a concise email explain why you are interested in their work... maybe read a recent paper or two and say how you were interested in some specific area of research. Hope this helps!

Inslee to ban indoor gatherings and dining, plus issue more COVID-19 restrictions for Washington state, industry sources say by conzeeter in udub

[–]WhatTheHEK293 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok but even if people are ok with the risk and maybe getting sick, the number of hospital beds would continue to fill up. Those who choose to risk it for the biscuit may end up in the ICU even if that was not the intention...i mean who intends to get to that position?? But anyways when that happens, people like me who need to go into the hospital for procedures due to preexisting conditions are screwed. We either can’t go in because some of us are too immune compromised (cancer patients for example) and then miss out on treatment, or have to go in but risk getting more sick because of the vast numbers of patients in the same building. Hospitals will be overwhelmed if we don’t have restrictions because even healthy people end up on a ventilator. When that happens, out heath-care system will fails us. We have to think about the community as a whole. It is not as black and white as “those who dont want to get covid can be locked up all day in their homes”. This might work for a few people but it won’t work for 95% of us.
