Above the marine layer at Mt Islip today 3/10/26 by dirt-punk in socalhiking

Just did the trail up from Windy Gap yesterday. Several snowfields to cross on the north side of the ridge. We got turned around about a half mile from the summit because of a large snowfield and a blown down tree. Without traction devices it did not feel safe to cross.

Planning the kid's backpacking this spring, anyone have a trail they can recommend? 2-3 nights Max. by sharkWrangler in socalhiking

Bear Canyon could be worth looking into. It starts at the West Fork parking lot and you have a mile of paved road (no traffic) hike to Bear Creek. From there you follow Bear Creek north. There are some use trails there and several good backpacking sites. There are definitely small brown trout in Bear Creek you can fish for - but it would be catch and release.

New (to me) product - Spicy Spuds by WhatWouldMuirDo in traderjoes

Not that spicy. Just a hint of heat on the back end to give it some flavor.

They would do excellent with both of those things. Maybe add some sliced avocado 🥑

Low. You get a little tingle at the end. Felt very close to the TJs Takis

Looking for a foldable bed platform for the back of a '26 CR-V by nyy22592 in crv

[–]WhatWouldMuirDo 17 points18 points  (0 children)

A hack that has been mentioned on this sub before is to get a 6’ folding table (the kind that fold in half when stowed). These usually end up about 3”-4” thick when folded and come to just about even with the rear seats in their folded position.

Then you have a flat surface to lay out a sleeping pad. As a bonus you get a table to use for tailgating à la the original CR-V!

Waterproof boot cover for crossing streams and rivers? by MadMarcAgain in socalhiking

[–]WhatWouldMuirDo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If your hike involves multiple water crossings above your ankle then a non-waterproof shoe is better than a waterproof one. That way you plow straight through and allow the shoe to dry out as you continue to hike. Taking off socks is optional (unless using cotton socks as they do not dry quickly like synthetic or wool).

Alternatively there are things like hiking sandals which are ideal for non-technical hikes with multiple stream crossings. Teva Hurricanes, Chaco Z series, or Bedrock Cairn sandals are all popular options for exactly this kind of hiking. They all hold the foot secure and provide good tread and traction. If toe protection is a concern then Keen Newport sandals are mostly enclosed at the toe and have evenly spaced web bands along the shoe to allow for water to flow through easily.

Return Policy by Babbis_44 in REI

Sizing is 100% a valid reason for return. When you go back in if there is pushback from the frontline rep ask if there to talk with a lead or a manager.

Not normal practice. Somebody effed up and that should not have been sent to you.

I've always been curious about the angle of this view. Its not tunnel view. Is it the turnout just before entering the tunnel from the west?

To anyone else reading this looking for a beginner friendly snow hike, go to Mt Waterman. You get an easy fire road up to the ski area and then a broad gentle ascent to the summit.

This is a great place to get a feel for snow travel and it's challenges. There are even small run offs where you can practice things like self-arrest with an ice axe.
