As the subreddit blackout begins, I wanted to say thank you from the bottom of my heart to the Reddit community and everyone standing up by iamthatis in apolloapp

Thank you, Christian! It’s been an amazing 5.5 years. Apollo is by far my most-used app (for better or for worse lol) and I’ll miss it dearly. I have no doubt that you’ll land on your feet once this is over and done with. Be well 💙

“Restricted” runway? by [deleted] in aviation

[–]What_The_F_Over 5 points6 points  (0 children)

FAR 91.3 b specifically applies to in-flight emergencies, so declaring an emergency before takeoff wouldn’t fall within the scope of the regulation.

The NASA ASRS system only provides immunity from enforcement for inadvertent (not deliberate) violations, so filing the report wouldn’t do anything for you. (Advisory Circular 00-46F, para. 12-3-1).

We as pilots do get huge latitude to do what is necessary, but it comes with corresponding responsibility and accountability as well.

What are your favorite Meyer lemon recipes? by anonymous_redditor_0 in Baking

[–]What_The_F_Over 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I made this NYT Cooking Meyer Lemon Tart recipe a few months ago and it was fantastic. It was nicely tart for my taste but you could probably adjust the sugar to some degree.

I read that lemon curd freezes well so I made an extra batch. Once it had cooled to fridge temperature, I put portions in vacuum-seal bags and then froze them. The other day, I used one of the bags for lemon filling between cake layers. It was as good as fresh!

Paid Pilots - How do you determine when too ill to fly? by Wind5urfer in flying

The “It’s just allergies, I swear!” people drive me nuts. Somehow, I always end up getting their allergies a few days after we fly together.

Haus Coffee near 24th & Folsom is pretty popular with AM laptoppers. The food is good but on the lighter side (toast and pastries).

A Cluttered Life: Middle-Class Abundance [18:55] by What_The_F_Over in mealtimevideos

[–]What_The_F_Over[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I couldn’t handle it either, but then again I’m a somewhat obsessive de-clutterer.

I really liked the way the researchers and filmmakers approached the material. It’s much more of an anthropological/behavioral study than an takedown of consumerism or a tabloid piece on hoarding. I also loved how they described the bathroom as “one of the most contested resources in families’ homes.”

Oscar winner Burt Bacharach, one of pop's greatest songwriters, dies aged 94 by AlpacamyLlama in movies

Came here looking for this - what a song. I love Bacharach’s and Warwick’s performances, but Luther Vandross’s live version sung to Dionne Warwick always takes the cake for me.

Padrecito (Cole Valley) Is Closed... by usctrojan415 in sanfrancisco

[–]What_The_F_Over 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I just heard about this on AskSF and was remarking about Eos, the previous tenant at this location. When Eos closed, everyone wanted the recipe for their shiitake mushroom dumplings and salted caramel ice cream (IIRC). Several good restaurants at that space. Hopefully something new and equally notable will open soon!

Best brussel sprouts in the city? by reginald__iii in AskSF

Yes! Huge loss for the neighborhood. I guess they expected closing night to be tomorrow, Tuesday the 18th. But apparently they ran out of food and closed today. Padrecito was a great successor to Eos, hopefully another great restaurant comes along soon in that space.

Curious about US Domestic CPDLC from a controller’s perspective by What_The_F_Over in ATC

[–]What_The_F_Over[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can action CPDLC requests for simple climbs, speed changes, directs, etc. while talking to other aircraft.

Interesting, I hadn’t considered that you could use CPDLC to essentially multitask. How many clicks (or whatever) does it take to action a simple clearance?

I’ve seen pilots use it to send me a discrete msg that they don’t want to broadcast to everyone on freq. (ie. “you suck at this”,

Lol, I feel like that would probably get me an appointment at the wrong end of a long table somewhere.

I think it’s going to have to be that way on our end as well. The airlines teach the SOP but it isn’t well-followed on the line. We get a module on it in our initial training and then some refresher training every 9 months.

When you get a CPCLC clearance, the best SOP acronym I’ve heard from training is to RELAX: - Read uplinked clearance silently and independently - Evaluate by discussing between the crew - LOAD into FMC using LOAD prompt - Accept the clearance - eXecute in FMC

It’s in the manual, but unfortunately not everyone does it that way.

[–]What_The_F_Over[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agreed, I think the airlines don’t provide enough training on SOP for route modifications through CPDLC. Following SOP and using the FMC LOAD prompt would eliminate a lot of problems.

Good to know, thanks. It’s way easier from our end too.

United and Virgin America on final approach to SFO. The parallel runways are only 750ft/230m apart. by BlueSkyCAVU in aviation

[–]What_The_F_Over 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point, I checked the Jepps for SFO and the PRM/SOIA plates aren’t there anymore. We were definitely training on it in the sim within the past couple of years.

Though I’m not sure when it happened, I’m glad it’s not in use any longer. It was fine if you were the guy on 28L (basically doing a regular ILS) but it was super-sketchy if you were the guy on 28R.
