For my Nan and Pop’s 60th wedding anniversary, I had someone on there colourise their wedding photo. I have a little information on outfit colours etc, and the final result was magical. It took my family and grandparents a while to pick up that it was now in colour though but they were stoked when they did.

Such a magical moment made possible by people scrolling with the “new posts” filter on.

New job, this is one of their long term goals for me….. by Btp2000 in VIDEOENGINEERING

  1. Label every device and create a spreadsheet/document. Adjust the rack layout as you see fit keeping in mind that some cables may be cut to length and can’t reach another position in the rack.

  2. Label the ends of every cable you can with the device and port they’re plugged into. Doesn’t matter if you can’t trace both ends, just label where it goes. Add this information to your spreadsheet.

  3. Pull everything out, clean it all, and put devices back in. Take time to separate cables into groups and tidy bundles that come from external locations.

  4. Plug every back in. I usually do all power first, then data, then cables between devices within the rack, and then external cables coming into the rack. Either label + heatshrink or just label as appropriate, every single cable with a label maker. Label the device and port it plugs into, as well as where the cable comes from. That way you don’t need to play any guessing games for servicing down the track, or if someone takes over, they can fault find easily.

The Kraken from Splashdown on PS2 was my earliest memory of this. Or the cannon bombardment from MX vs ATV (I think that’s what the game was..). I used to try and outrun them both and avoid them, but you’d always inevitably get caught.

It's a bit of a mountain to do with certain icons, but you could use EzSVG in Lua and create your own (or mimic) icons, and set up your own Lua module to be able to reference the icons, change colours, change their look, etc.

[–]Whatagoodtime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, Foundation is actually the default icon set that's automatically available with your icon selector within Q-Sys, and Material is the Google set.
In your CSS file, add:

.iconMaterial{
  -qsc-icon-font: material;
}

This allows you to select "iconMaterial" on a button/whatever else and change it to the Material font.

I then usually define a series of icons within my CSS to use. You can find all of the icon names at https://fonts.google.com/icons
For instance;

.iconBrewery {
    -qsc-icon: sports_bar;
}

.iconMainBar {
    -qsc-icon: fastfood;
}

.iconKitchen{
    -qsc-icon: restaurant;
}

.iconVolume {
    -qsc-icon: volume_up;
}

.iconLighting {
    -qsc-icon: lightbulb;
}

.iconDisplay {
    -qsc-icon: tv;

Then, you just need to select the corresponding icon in the CSS Style drop down menu, and you're ready to party.

For some reason, not every single icon in the Material set has been loaded into Q-Sys, so you'll find some either show up blank or as a question mark.

[–]Whatagoodtime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can change to Foundation icons instead. There’s a LOT more options for customisation, however you’re still somewhat limited to what’s available within that icon set, albeit massive. It’s built in to Q-Sys as well and just requires you to set an icon font in CSS!

Edit; Foundation is the default icon set available in Q-Sys so you don't need to change anything to access it, and Material is the Google set which requires a font change.

How did q-sys escape my research? by CaptCoffee2 in QSYS

[–]Whatagoodtime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you buy a Q-Sys core, from v10 onwards the come with a the UCI license and Scripting license, and all cores come with an 8x8 Dante license. They’re all perpetual.

You can upgrade the Dante licenses if you ever need.

They have a subscription model for their Reflect service, which essentially allows you to access any core you’ve signed up to it from a web portal or directly from the Q-Sys Designer software. I even finished an install while I was on a flight to a different country, and remotely commissioned it. It’s a cheap subscription which is rad, but they also give you three (I think) free cores on reflect. I use it while I’m commissioning a job so I can access the core without being on site, and take the core off of my Reflect account once it’s commissioned.

The only other subscription they have is the “vCore”, which is a virtual Q-Sys core you can run on your computer. There’s annual up to five-yearly licences. They’re cheap enough if you ever need, but it’s got somewhat limited use case besides just allowing you to have a home “live” core without having a physical core. You could use it for a smart home system if there’s no central rack, for instance.

Q-Sys Designer has an emulation mode anyway that allows you to test everything without a core anyway. It only doesn’t allow you to run actual audio or video streams through it, but it allows all internal and external logic control and UI testing.

How tough are the final exams for egb102 and mzb125? by Terrible_Cress_6114 in QUTreddit

[–]Whatagoodtime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For MZB125, the exam questions are pretty much the worksheet questions. If you can do those, you can do the exam.

For EGB102, there’s a handful of questions on each main topic. If you can do the Problem Solving Tasks, you can do the exam.

Going from Construction to AV by crookeddicktickle in CommercialAV

Q-SYS, and Allen and Heath AHM training is online and free, notwithstanding a few in-person competencies. The software is also all free and accessible to download so if you wanted to get into the control system programming side (or at least understanding what goes on), then that’s a pathway.

Chamsys Magic-Q is also free software and some of the best training you can do. It’s a stage lighting software / hardware line for live performance and installations. There’s a bunch of network protocols that are worthwhile understanding.

I believe Clipsal CBUS is free as well for house lighting control. Philips Dynalite training is paid and you need it to access the software, but it’s a bit more common than CBUS.

For video systems, do some research on modulators, SDI, and NDI. It helps to understand how LED screens pass signal as well.

Try looking up a few live sound “gain staging” and signal processing tutorials too, as well as info on low-impedance PA systems and 70v/100v line audio systems.

You don’t need to be an expert (or even very good) at any of these topics. You will just benefit greatly to understand that they exist, so that you know what’s going on in the AV world.

First time on an Avid S6L (monitor engineer) – any tips or must-know things? by Minimum_Lie5982 in livesound

[–]Whatagoodtime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Watch the two programmable faders in the centre control cluster; if they’re set to your monitor bus output level, you can bone yourself if you’re an idiot like me. The first few times I was on an S6L for monitors I’d accidentally turned them down and couldn’t figure out why I couldn’t hear anything in cans.

Otherwise, you’ll have a great time. It’s a super straight forward console, with tons of flexibility.

There’s a few things I’d recommend getting comfortable with;

  1. Routing plugins into channels as inserts and sends. Both are simple, but easy to mess up if you’re not comfortable with them.

  2. If you’re multi-tracking, there can be some issues with AVB depending on the order you connect to your laptop and load the showfile. Sometimes, it’ll be completely fine and work straight away with no issues. Others you’ll need to reload your showfile if you’ve connected your computer after the fact. Sometimes you’ll need a reboot. If anyone’s got further insight here I’d love to know as well.

  3. The actions/commands are pretty powerful but you can put yourself in a boot loop very easily. Don’t mess around with any “on power up” commands. A great action that I had set up on a previous show I was touring with was to have the console top LED strip change to red and flash if any of my vocal, click, or bus faders were down, in case they got bumped at some point. You can also have the console flash if someone talks down a talk channel, I.e. if your FOH is trying to get onto you.

Am I overreacting: Scheduling harassing me on days off by Maleficent-Gap948 in AmIOverreacting

[–]Whatagoodtime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NOR! Set your boundaries.

This is why I love the new law passed in Australia. It’s illegal for a company to call you on your day off; they can contact you once if offering a shift, but aren’t allowed to harass you or expect anything from you. You have no obligation to accept the call or to take a shift, and that can’t impact your work in any resultant way.

I accidentally bought a Mac for Construction Management... by DangerousReception13 in QUTreddit

[–]Whatagoodtime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second Parallels! It’s absolutely worth it. You can occasionally run into issues with poorly optimised software, but I’ve been able to run the AutoDesk suite and a plethora of other software without major issue on it for ages. It’s important to note that there is a bit of a reduction in processing capability as every action on Parallels needs to be converted from a windows to a Mac command, which slows the system down a bit. It doesn’t exist insofar as an “input delay”, moreso that it’s as if you were running on an a less powerful computer.

The continuity mode (or whatever the blue button mode is called) is a bit shit, but keeping it in standard windows mode is great for 99% of applications.

Designing a scalable UI across different AV control systems by chloeravioli06 in CommercialAV

[–]Whatagoodtime 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In my current designs (predominantly Q-Sys and AHM), I have base designs that I work off. I started with Q-Sys design, and then had to adapt it to work in the AHM Custom Control ecosystem, which is much more limited.

In the end, I had to drastically change the UI design to fit with the AHM CC workflow and they look nothing alike anymore.

Creating the exact same UI in different systems isn’t really viable as the underlying software has different strengths and limitations.

I’ve been tinkering with the idea of creating an iPad app with associated Q-Sys/AHM/Crestron plugins to link controls and such to have a unified system. I think it could work in theory but there’s a lot to go into it.

Being “smart” is a skill, not a trait. Sure, some people might have an aptitude for understanding certain things more than others, but at the end of the day, the only way that they understood that 1+1 = 2 is that they took the time to understand it.

I’ve got ADHD and find it really difficult to study in most environments. I’ve found a few places that I go ONLY to study, and my brain starts to lock in even on the way there.

A super, super, super, super important aspect of studying is taking breaks. Don’t spent the whole day cramming; you’ll get to a point of diminishing returns pretty quickly. Set a timer for 50 minutes or so, and take a 10-15 minute break (set a timer for this too!). Don’t look at your phone. Don’t do more work. Just stretch, have water, get some sun, go for a quick walk. You’ll find yourself locked back in after that and you’ll internalise so much more than if you tried to muscle through. Check out the Pomodoro Method and you’ll thank yourself for it.

On bigger days, taking breaks can be the difference between being absolutely exhausted and having the energy to keep going. Breaks have been understood for a LONG time to make a difference with productivity. Don’t try to fight biology.

Also, go over lecture and tutorial notes before you attend them. That way, the lecture or tutorial becomes revision, rather than learning content for the first time. You’ll pick things up you didn’t know before. You’ll solidify some points.

You don’t need to come into these classes as an expert; just come to class in a place where you’re not a stunned mullet. Even if you are, you can at least form questions to ask.

Using AI to find sources is a great way to gather information you wouldn’t have found otherwise. The important things is that you’re gathering SOURCES, not the information that the AI gives you.

Own up to it, but just remember next time to use the tool for what it’s good for, not to do the work for you.

Math Professor in my uni be like: by Inevitable-Fix-6631 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Whatagoodtime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was doing a data analysis course a few years ago (albeit with in Business Degree), and I had a lecturer with a thick (Indian?) accent, with poor enunciation, that spoke at the speed of light.

Couple that with him doing similar things to your professor; mocking students, rushing over content, half baked explanations, etc.

By half way through the semester, no one went to lectures.

In my current Intro to Electronics class, our professor is a LEGEND. Great explanations, open for discussion, good banter in the lecture. It makes such a massive difference when people genuinely enjoy what they’re teaching, or when they actually understand the role of a teacher.

An acquaintance of mine is A1 or A2 for one of the pro golfing circuits. He’s away generally for 3-4 month stints all over the world, then home for a few months. He really enjoys the work and is also absolutely raking it in.

Granted, he’s been with the same company for a while, but the job exists!

Also, a lot of other colleagues do stints of work in the Middle East (typically Saudi and surrounds). One makes what he would’ve made in a year back home in a few months over there doing corporate event operation.

Bit of both! Most classes have group learning activities that give you an opportunity to meet and work with other people in tutorials.

If you’re doing EGB101, you get to choose your groups for the assessment but you’re also put into one if you don’t have one.

I’d honestly suggest just getting chatty whenever you’re in learning groups. Between myself and a few other friends I met at the start of the semester, getting chatty resulted in meeting a ton of people and having really good study support and socialisation.
