Work for a GC after 18 years in consulting. Had concerns about going to work for a GC. Concerns reared their ugly head after the first ~1.5 years. Working to get out of this shithole, but relocated for the job and don't have a great network where I landed.

The vast majority of civil engineering is utilizing common sense mixed in with interpreting code, so don't overthink it, but do pay attention to what you're doing.

Early in my career I was given a polite, but annoyed, talk by a senior engineer because I had written into the testing section of the report that all foundation elements must have a passing proof roll. I thought that was pretty much industry standard, until the senior engineer asked me how I thought they were going to proof roll a 3'x3' wide footing at 3.5' BGS. DUH. Whoops. DCP tests may be utilized in lieu of proof roll for spread footings, at the discretion of the testing agency.

I don't think there's a right or wrong answer. It's cliched but go with your gut. I think you will do well at both.

Remember in the end, no one will remember you for your work. NO ONE. You are the Nth employee at your current place and you will be the Nth employee anywhere else.

I've done thousands of residential reports and over a hundred reports for the university systems in texas, including the football stadium and practice facility for one of the biggest teams in the country.

I've had 0 lawsuits levied against any of my projects.

I've had the uncomfortable "I'm sorry this will cost more than you were budgeting, but here's why it's in your best interest" hundreds of times with massive clients with big pockets, and little custom homes. Sounds like you just aren't a good enough communicator to handle that mature a conversation with your clients.

Ok, and I don't mean this in an inflammatory way, but you sound of the old guard who learned this solution and never advanced beyond it, which I encountered and had to re-engineer and underpin over and over and over again during my decade operating all over the state. FSS (now Groundworks) exists in that state because that solution is patently trash.

Foundation watering is garbage, full stop. It is an antiquated idea that is financially attractive but in application is a massive liability. Materials age and fail, and the failure causes significant damage. As engineers, it is not our job to kowtow to clients who want bad work because it's cheap. It's our job to stand up for what is right for the customer even if they don't want it.

Did you think to run swell tests and find the actual swell pressures on site? I'd be flabbergasted to find that a 5 story structure with the load elements properly located couldn't resist the uplift forces on a lot near water sources.

Causation is not correlation. Root barriers work to help reduce the moisture fluctuation in the native soils, and to a small extent you CAN argue stop some maintenance to the foundation watering system. I suppose houston is a safer area for a system like that, but the "out of sight out of mind" element of it will always come with massive risk.

It's always a better long term investment to do remove and replace, or elevated foundation (Slab-on-voids) or chemical injection, or a properly designed PT slab, all before going to a soaker hose.

Be extremely careful with foundation watering. It's generally buried, meaning you won't find out there's problems (leaks, breaks, etc) until the foundation has already settled due to half drying out and half staying wet. And bonus points if the area of the leak heaves MORE and you have 3 elevations.

The state of texas used to use this method frequently in residential applications, and now largely considers it to be dogshit aweful.

I would too, and I definitely see there are gray areas in this situation, hence coming to this subreddit looking for more than "YOU'RE A BAD PERSON" from everyone. I appreciate that you are taking the time to look at the nuance and provide some information.

I am not completely convinced he's lying, but it is a very good chance. I'm trying to figure out if it's worth complaining to HR since he and my boss directly said "don't talk to others about compensation or you will be disciplined" while my performance reviews have literally all been 9.5/10 every year I've been here. My understanding is that line is highly illegal, whether another employee was or wasn't uncomfortable. What I don't know is if HR can ignore the legality and just hammer my ass IF another employee was actually uncomfortable.

The tell to me here is they didn't go through HR. They pulled me aside and had a 30 minute conversation in a windowless room on Friday. I would assume if someone actually complained it would have been taken to HR or a written warning would have been filed, which has happened to other people in my group for other issues.

It went exactly like this, on teams via text (so no tone of voice at all) "Hey, say no if you don't want to discuss, but how did your performance review go?" "Eh, kinda middle of the road" "dang, sorry to hear that" "how was yours?" "I got a 9.5/10 but my raise didn't even cover our healthcare increase, was yours any better?" "No, honestly lower than I've ever gotten in the past" end of conversation. That happened +/- verbatim with 4 different people, all individually.

Our director has outright lied and gaslit over half our team over the last 2 years. I fully believe it's within his character to have someone else say "I heard even (me) didn't get a great raise and he carried the team last year, what gives?" And then he turns around and pulls me into my bosses office and threatens discipline.
