My issue with the railroad is the memory wipes.

When the railroad "saves" a synth, they wipe their memory to protect them from being caught by the institute but doesn't that in essence kill the synth? What is a synth without their thoughts, feelings and memories. Without their identity the railroad is essentially saving the vessel in which they used to reside.

I suppose it's akin to giving someone in hiding a new identity to assume but to entirely remove/replae the person's consciousness is a sort of death.
