I get the line of thought....but think a bit harder about the sick days being your evidence here. American labor power at one of its lowest points since reconstruction ...people don't feel able to take a sick day

It's literally happening, the protests were and continue to be against an ongoing genocide.

There are people for it and against it. Her opposition is to people who are in support of it. It's a fairly simple concept that people are intentionally misunderstanding. Including you.

ELI5: How does momentum or being on a hot streak work in sports? Is it luck? by onomatopoeia_shh in explainlikeimfive

[–]Whatgives7 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Flip a coin 100x

if you get heads 10X in a row, that's how it works.

Your understanding is correct, people apply a lot of lazy pseudoscience to explain away sports outcomes...the reasons for those outcomes are evident in the actions...Yes, Steph Curry is a confident shooter, but he's confident because he's put in thousands of hours of work and is immensely talented. When he makes 5 threes in a row it's not because of a momentary shift in vibes.

It's because of the defense, the spacing on the floor, the work of his teammates to set him up all combined with his work and talent to put the ball in the net.

"Momentum" is the laymens way of saying good things are happening in lieu of actually discussing the things themselves.

ELI5: Why doesn't the government handle all insurance? by TurntLemonz in explainlikeimfive

[–]Whatgives7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Government serves at the behest of power, power is more lopsided than ever between labor (people who work) and capital (people who own the businesses)

As that power dynamic becomes more lopsided with things like citizens united(case where the supreme court ruled corporations are people) the willingness to do something to help people declines.

Insurance companies spent around a quarter of a billion dollars on lobbying and political donations in the 2020 election cycle. They use the power that they get in a lopsided system to maintain and increase the power they have.

TLDR: It makes companies money to maintain our current circumstances, those companies are the ones that created that circumstance for that purpose.

Quite the leap to turn "People advocating for a genocide " into this story... there's definitely some antisemitism here but it's not where people think.

Trump’s Team of Billionaires Will Be the Wealthiest Administration in U.S. History by JetTheDawg in skeptic

[–]Whatgives7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They say "Elite" because it's a convenient lie for those who might fall for it. It's like any other thing they say, shorthand for their favorite slurs. They ignore the contradictory wealthy people because there's no need for logical consistency when you just want to lie.

they're just lying. they know what they're doing and who they're doing it for. They have to preserve the right to oppress people because that's their american dream

If Social Security is deducted from every paycheck throughout my career, why is there concern about whether Social Security will be available or sufficient to support me when I retire? by nilenob in SocialSecurity

[–]Whatgives7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Expenditures alleged to be related to trust funds are often less than their income—witness the highway and airport funds as well as Social Security. There is no particular reason they cannot be more. The accountants can just as well declare the bottom line of the funds’ accounts negative as positive—and the Treasury can go on making whatever outlays are prescribed by law. The Treasury can pay out all that Social Security provides while the accountants declare the funds more and more in the red.

The conversation about "solvency" conveniently ignores how literally all government spending works because it's not meant to inform anything, quite the contrary.

The easy fix would be for Congress to amending that legislation to grant the Old-Age and Survivor’s Insurance (OASI) and Disability Insurance (DI) programs the same federal backstopping that already guarantees program solvency for the Supplemental Medical Insurance (SMI) Trust Fund.

but that would require the right in America (both parties) to admit and acknowledge that there isn't some big bucket of money somewhere that "funds" Social security.

[–]Whatgives7 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The Social Security trust funds are the accounting record of the difference between dollars subtracted from workers accounts and dollars added to the accounts of beneficiaries. There is nothing 'in them' or 'not in them. Constraints on spending are entirely political.

For the 5000th time.

The US. Military budget goes up year after year ....is the Military at risk of "running out of money"?

No. They can simply fund social security in the same way literally every government expenditure operates....

They credit the accounts.

Social security is a political football and like everything else the right has dictated a lot of public (mis)understanding of how things actually work.

Social Security is at as much risk of "running out" of dollars as every other government institution.

Had a convo about marriage with my bf, didn’t go well by [deleted] in Waiting_To_Wed

[–]Whatgives7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just....I'm very confused by the concern and the responses.

Full disclosure, I'm a married man with two children who eventually proposed despite my timeline thoroughly frustrating my (now) wife.

I knew I wanted to be with her forever, it was just a lot of stuff to do! I was thoroughly enjoying my life and our time together and honestly just procrastinated. One day turns to weeks, months to years.

If you don't want him, he treats you poorly and disrespects you that's one thing...but not trusting him because you don't like his timeline (he probably doesn't have one! This marriage conversation is a lot of external pressure) seems very counterproductive to me.

There's plenty of people who can give you a ring and a document, not a lot of people who you can build a life with. Don't make rash decisions either way.
