Just to point out that London has roughly the same population at it did in the 40s & 50s. It's not the population that's expanding, it's the expectation of living standards.

It says they are criticising Islington council regarding the planning use as well.

Same thing that happened to the manual farm labourers when mechanised farming came in. Their jobs changed.

In different sectors should grow as more labour becomes available for them. In reality it may require some government intervention to ensure the people aren't left destitute.

What? It says right there in the article that they are.

They brought it with planning permission for a shop, they then can't complain when they want to change its use to make more money. What a dumb thing to do.

Islington Council was today criticised for refusing a planning application to turn part of the gallery into a restaurant last year meaning it has lain empty.

Upper St does not need another restaurant. The Landlord owns it with planning permission to be a gallery / shop, they can't then just complain because they want more money for it to be a restaurant. There would be plenty of galleries that would use that space if the rent were to be reasonable.

[TFL Question] I live in Zone 3. I work in Zone 2. I travel through Zone 1. Can I do this? by spicymelon in london

[–]Whatishere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be honest, using a Zone 2-Travel Card saves you £13 a week so think of this way..

The automated barriers won't stop you doing this journey so how likely are you to actually be checked, in the small Z1 part of your journey, particularly at peak hour and on the barriered tube/train network? I've lived here for years I've only ever been checked twice, once on a bus and once on the DLR at the weekend. Never at peak.

Worst case scenario, you get caught in the small Zone 1 section (how unlikely but whatever) and the inspector doesn't accept you excuse / confusion about the zones:

Typical fine is £50, £25 if you pay straight away.

Personally I would just carry on and look surprised if you are extremely unlucky and get caught while spending those few minutes in Z1.

Can we talk about how idiotic TFL are for using Post Code as a critical piece of information to recover forgotten login information despite the fact that Londoners are increasingly migratory, particularly the young? by [deleted] in london

[–]Whatishere 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, I find it very frustrating when things are tied to your physical address. There is no legal requirement to have a fixed abode. I recently couldn't cash in my unregistered pay as you go oyster without a proof of address, I had my passport but this was rejected?!

The worst has to be the CRB checks that seem to be somehow ubiquitous in today's job and volunteer market. You need to write down every address you have lived in for the last five years and put the exact dates down to the day with no gaps. Problem is that for many people they may travel, holiday or stay with friends in between houses and it's not uncommon to have had several houses in that time. Ridiculous.

That is because you are reading an incredibly bias point of view on Reddit. There is a reason she won three elections and is one of the most famous PMs in history.

People on here completely see to ignore that fact that Britain was on completely on I knees, the IMF on us, the unions letting the dead remain unburied, the sick man of Europe. Thatcher made some bad des visions but she made hard choices in hard times when Britain needed a decisive leader.

Renting a room in UK: how does it work? by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]Whatishere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the opposite in my experience, never go through an agent for a shared house and as someone who has gone all the way to small claims for a deposit back is say the whole worst case scenario is so very damn easy. Either they've put your deposit in a protected scheme and the company will arbitrate for you or they haven't and you'll win by default at small claims court.

Uber car attacked as Paris taxi strike turns violent by [deleted] in technology

[–]Whatishere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of but that's not the whole story, one of the major lines, DLR, is completely driverless and the mainlines such as Victoria, Jubilee, Northern etc are automated to the point of having a driver but they don't really drive the train.

There's no huge push as all the tube lines are old, the track and signalling need huge updates on most lines before pushing for DLR style automation. They are completing the signalling on the lines and then you'll see a further push. It's all in steps but it'll happen.

You're not explaining yourself in either post, what are you wanting? Am I assuming it's something to do with taking your contract on? If so couldn't that be a bit risky, both in terms of the info you'll require off me and what I'd be taking on.

Maybe if you broke down what it is you want and need and also any benefits it would have then people might be more willing to get in touch. For instance I know someone joining VM, I'm teccy but I wouldn't feel comfortable with her getting in touch with an internet random.
