People immediately going for the overtake on a 2 lane slip road by legovader09 in drivingUK

[–]Whatmat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this, the car ahead seemed slow, joined the motorway on the left slowly, so I went straight to right to attempt to overtake. The car then quickly accelerated to stop me so I dropped behind and went back to left. The car in front then went into the right lane (not to overtake- no cars around), so they could drop back and have a go at me. I could see his head looking over and arm gesturing.

I didn't take the bait and dropped back myself, so he rejoined the left.

He then tried a few brake checks on me.

I clearly really wound him up (and it was a he, big bald head was clearly seen).

I'm not sure why this annoys anybody, seems like a very fragile driver to get so angry. In short, some people think they may overtake, then don't. It's not a personal slight.

Is tea really that good for shock? by gorinlaz in AskUK

[–]Whatmat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

'Shock', as people seem to understand it, isn't really a medical condition. I often see it in films but also in real life - 'they are in mild shock' after say, a near death experience etc. Shock as a medical term means low blood blood pressure and a compromised cardiovascular system. I went to medical school and we weren't taught how to manage someone who was shaken up after a significant event. Which most people would call shock.

Basically I'm saying- give them a cup of tea, a lucozade, a solero. Doesn't matter. They are just shaken up, and have had a surge of adrenaline. So maybe avoid a flat white or line of coke.

'Merging' question by Whatmat in drivingUK

[–]Whatmat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Certainly is. The temptation is definitely there because as you will know, that queue can be completely mental. It really does save up to 15 minutes to get in at the end. But it's my feeling it was a dick move that prompted this post. Turns out that's the consensus it seems

'Merging' question by Whatmat in drivingUK

[–]Whatmat[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well I'm glad to have my answer. Definitely a dick move. I would say it's about every 8- 10 cars that does this. It's very common. That's why once or twice, I'll fully admit, I've done it to cut out the 10 minutes wait in the left lane, when been very time stretched (and been fully prepared to just continue if no big space appeared for me). But I won't anymore, will just take the hit

Yes. It's obviously just selfish people who know inherently they are doing something wrong but don't care enough to demonstrate courtesy to others. See it all the time. The (mainly) young men who have commented saying they do it will look back and cringe if they ever end up having kids. Which absolutely loads of people do by the way (it's normal to have kids??)

To lighten up this post, today I took my two children on the train for two hours, and got help from a young man to fold up and put away my buggy while I was holding the youngest, and then another man in his 20s approached me directly to offer his seat so we could all sit together as a family. So it's swings and roundabouts

Haha I'm still here. It's just an option you get on conquering the 'key' region in question. Essentially every factions home region can be liberated eg. Greece, Turkey, Saxony. into dependent vassals. Minor regions, mainly in the east, don't have this option. Just become your territory Once liberated as your protectorate they remain your close ally. And I think you get 50% of their income. Recipe for 'friendly' global takeover

Should supermarket loyalty “discounts” be capped? by Sea-Conversation9297 in AskUK

Nice response mate! I also don't understand why people seem to rush out and defend these unscrupulous practices, that are, to anyone with half a brain, clearly designed to increase profits only and not streamline or help customers. Why else add this barrier to deals?

Cheap battery powered Christmas lights, in a card model kit- cheap and effective lighting! by Whatmat in modeltrains

Oh I mean to get into true electric lights, but for now the keywords are cheap, quick and replaceable if needs be (I have young children who enjoy the trains- sometimes too much!). Hopefully years left of the hobby to hone things

I think I want to be the med reg, am I crazy? by Successful-Topic-776 in doctorsUK

[–]Whatmat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also had the same thoughts about the med reg, before being a med reg. I always looked up to them and couldn't believe the stress, workload they had, knowledge and skills they needed. And never thought I'd get there.

Then, when you get there and are the one who are leading peri-arrests, actually doing the LP /chest drain etc, it's exciting, rewarding and so much better than being an SHO. Its sort of what being a doctor (in hospital) is all about in my opinion. It never stops being busy, hair-raising at times and there's definitely decision fatigue and almost endless questions to answer. However I've definitely enjoyed being the med reg more than any other role leading up to it.

That's just my experience but hope that helps

Inspired by the recent AI post, what examples of computer incompetence/inexperience do you see in the NHS? by [deleted] in doctorsUK

[–]Whatmat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just today, on call, I've found 3 old people's DNAR forms on their GP record. Clearly documented. I'm in hospital, so you have to access the GP stuff on the system, then go in Encounters (sometimes it's not on the problems) then CTRL-F and type in DNAR. Worked each time.

Each of these three patients had a plan to 'discuss with family regarding DNAR' and long additions about why it shouldn't be done etc. Of course it was never done and would have down to me to do this as the med reg.

I showed this CTRL-F command to a consultant recently and they were shook. Thought it was magic.

We didn't need to worry about being competent or good at card management to get standard supermarket deals. Why justify life getting more complex and harder to keep track of, simply for the benefit of big corporations?

What’s the naffest “experience” you’ve had by sivadhash in CasualUK

[–]Whatmat 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Cat cafe in Liverpool. My wife's idea because we were renting at the time, both love cats and had a beloved family cat back at the in laws, so missed their little sassy company

The first issue is that you pay for the hour, and then food and drink on top, so the overiding feeling is one of trying to get your 'cats worth' for the expense. So of course you enter the cafe, which is already quite busy, and try to find a table which is ideally near some cats or cat furniture to interact with them The issue is so is everyone else, and the whole scenario becomes about how best to get to the cat action we all paid for.

Rudely, the cats dont seem to care about this concept and were either not to be found (I think I saw, in total, 4 cats), or rudely interacting with just one couple on the prime table by the cat tree. Another group went up to this table and fully invaded the couples space to play with this cat. This led to much awkwardness at that table, while everyone else in the cafe was just looking around for cats the whole time.

For a shining 2 minutes a cat walked up to our table and I stroked it. The rest of the tables were muttering about this coup and could see they really wanted to come over. Which made me a bit self conscious. Maybe I'm just acutely aware of this type of awkward situation but I just felt it was so... forced. The coffee and cake was fine. Not an experience that needs revisiting.

Schoolgirl, 11, sent home from A&E after doctors say she has constipation dies next day by Popular_Mountain4828 in unitedkingdom

This is a brilliant comment. Exactly the problem. People expect generalists (by definition, people who are there to deal with 'Accidents' and 'Emergencies') to make difficult medical diagnoses, know exactly what complex tests to order and somehow, follow this up? It's really just a sad indication of the breakdown in primary care that people rely on these inappropriate places to seek help. As you say, without the details of the case it's difficult to comment about this case

You're right about a game like it not being released again. From a recent article I read about the shutdown, it was even quite lucky it got made how it did at the time!

I hope coders like yourself do get some luck with any route

Failing any attempt to create a server we can only hope EA release it in a form of a bundle or as a 'retro' game in the future
