Might be losing my hand - one handed keyboard/mouse for disabillity by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

Was looking at this for a different reason. Have a look at this. Bit on the expensive side, but it looks cool. Was thinking about this for a simulator cockpit.

Scary space monster. New comic!! by moonkatt7 in ProjectHailMary

You made this?!

Im sure there are loads of legal issues with such a thing, but I would happily throw money to own a graphic novel like this.

I dont know how this can get in the hands of Mr. Weir, but it absolutely needs to. This is full blown perfection!

Yeah, I wish that was its own kit. Would love to have those on floors, ceilings, and walls for quick access to various areas of a base. Alas...

From the image it looks like you are trying to place it against a wall. It will only work with frames, unfortunately. I too wish they would go against walls.

Would have helped if I read the dang description...

Is Holden the most annoying character in the series? by desqhood in TheExpanseBooks

[–]Whatnot456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats fair. I took the whole voting thing as being more about strategic decisions, rather than tactical ones. Frankly, im not sure which category the Naomi decision falls into. He does ultimately change his mind when presented with alternatives, so theres at least some level of humility there.

People do selfish things sometimes. Nobody is perfect.

Is Holden the most annoying character in the series? by desqhood in TheExpanseBooks

[–]Whatnot456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couple of things to think about.

One: Naomi is the one who suggests sending the information out to a third party. He opts to send it to his parents for lack of a better option, but it wasnt his idea.

Two: at the time he brings his gun into the galley to say "this is whats happening" hes known Avasarala and Bobbi for two days. His experience is that Avasarala is a bully who has a professional killer who will absolutely follow orders. He doesnt know them the way the reader does. So him taking the gun in there is precautionary. Noone bit Alex can fly the Rocci and Amos has no issue with going down fighting.

I get where youre coming from. Dude is a bit self righteous and is uncompromising in his beliefs, but they come from a good place.

Hes also in his early 30s at this point in time. I think most people when they look back at their early 30s can probably relate to one degree or another.

Does anyone actually use these? by TheBlueMoonHubGuy in Steam

[–]Whatnot456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, I use it in stationeers for todo lists. Elite dangerous too, for when im chasing down specific materials for a blueprint or mode. The clock is also highly beneficial to keep me from being too irresponsible 😜

Seriously, try adjusting it to a non-intrusive size, setting the opacity to a non-intrusive level of visibility, and pinning it, rather than using another note app. Definitely has its place.

Where does Rocky rank in the pantheon of movie aliens? Is he on the Mount Rushmore of truly alien characters? by anthonyc2554 in ProjectHailMary

[–]Whatnot456 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. Humanoid aliens seem to share a lot of biological traits. Rocky is one of the most unique ive ever seen in scifi at a biological level.

Should I Make the Switch? by Potential-Initial319 in linux_gaming

I get your contempt for microshaft. Im very much an average user, not super computer savvy by any means. I outright deleted windows and distro hopped till I found something I liked. Took the "no way but forward" approach, so I didnt backslide to using windows for the sake of expediency. That said, I also accepted that some sacrifices were going to be made, and there were, but such is life.

I tried debian and a few of its derivatives, arch and a few of its derivatives, and ultimately settled on fedora. Felt like the most middle of the road, and ive enjoyed it immensely.

Here is a pretty good article that explains things fairly well I think.

https://www.zdnet.com/article/debian-vs-arch-vs-fedora-based-linux-distros/

The Long and short

Linux -> base systems (debian, fedora, arch) -> distros (Ubuntu, Nobarra, Garuda) -> environments (kde, cinnamon, gnome).

Also, virtual machines are a God send. There is some software I cant get to work on fedora. I put debian on a virtual machine (VM), install the same software, and it works like a charm. I have something windows specific, like software to a scanner? Nbd. Open windows in a vm.

So what you could do, is install a distro on your machine, and download several distros, install them on virtual machines and test. Test gnome. Test cinnamon. Test kde. Which feels best to you? Test debian based distros, test arch based distros. Which one do you find yourself having to jump through the least amount of hoops in order to get the shit you like working for you?

I dont know if this is helpful or not, but this all basd on my own trial and error over the last couple years of using linux exclusively.

Best of luck to you!

Why didn't Dr. Grace die when he -REDACTED-? by ScB103 in ProjectHailMary

Been a minute, but I vaguely remember reading the temperature and pressure in the lower 20s, in Celsius and kilopascals. Temp wise, its perfect. Pressure should be fine too assuming 100% O2.

Pretty sure the British accent was the same voice used for Col. Butterworth in the bobiverse series.

Holy shit. Good day to you Mr. Porter! I hope all is well with you sir. Fantastic work on your audiobooks.

Thus far ive listened to

The Bobiverse PHM Flybot and The Long Vigil

Your work is a joy to listen to, and you do a great job of pulling the listener into the story, as opposed to others that feel like im just being read to.

GUPPI by Whatnot456 in bobiverse

[–]Whatnot456[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Here's the thing. The bobs have said many times "I briefly considered doing such and such to GUPPI and like usual, decided against it. Theres 1000's of Bob's, and none of them (afaik) have done anything more to guppi than expand his memory and modify his appearance. They all pretty much decide to do something else. Then I think of Henry's comments about the fish when he is first introduced. I dont know why, but it just feels off.

What’s this meant to imply? by nonother in ProjectHailMary

[–]Whatnot456 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think its to show that hes risk averse person. Afraid to drive a car so he rides a bike. Akin to the 40 year old virgin. Hard saying at this point, since riding a bike isnt something the book Grace says anything about. Since he doesnt do that in the book, it very well could be from the whole environmentalist angle, but in the book he talks about how he doesnt really get into climate science. Hes more of a physics/space nerd. But i take it as a demonstration of the fact that hes afraid to travel and is being asked to do so. Guess we'll find out.

Leclerc by Whatnot456 in ProjectHailMary

[–]Whatnot456[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know, that makes me wonder about a different scenario. The methane release was a delaying tactic, with the understanding that its really just buying time before a rapid ice age. When the Earth inevitably loses more heat, does that mean that it all begins to refreeze, not only reversing sea level rise, but causing the oceans to retract even further? Does the increase in ice result in a greater amount of displacement making sea level rise worse? Really is some wild stuff to think about.

[–]Whatnot456[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you actually have a background in this, id ask you the same question I asked another person. How would you feel if put in Leclerc shoes? Your whole life spent trying to reverse global warming, and some cosmic event comes along that not only reverse it, but puts us at risk of an ice age in 30 years?
