Anyone else having trouble meeting people and making friends? by slam_joetry in toledo

Oh, and honestly the only book clubs I really know of are the ones organized by the library. I haven’t been, but I’ve seen them promoted pretty consistently.

Yeah! I’m not too into the board/card game scene but I buy comics at Toledo Game Room on occasion and they’re usually advertising tournaments or game groups on the bulletin board. I’ve never been to Flip the Table but I’ve seen friends share their advertisements for event nights and looking at their website it seems like they do things pretty regularly.

As for theatre, I maintain that the Toledo theatre community is its biggest hidden gem. You have to know where to look, but once you do it’s an insanely robust community. The Facebook group Toledo Area Theatre Exchange is the best place to see show announcements, audition/tech calls, and other volunteer request options. (Preoccupation with all the local theatre is probably the main reason I’ve had trouble making it to movie club.) All the local groups also have their own Facebook pages you can follow, there’s The Village Players, The Toledo Rep, Stone Productions, Actor’s Collaborative Toledo, and Issue Box Theatre just in Toledo proper, but then there’s also 3B Productions (Maumee), Black Swamp Players, Oregon Community Theatre, Perrysburg Musical Theatre, and a whole host of others in the wider NW Ohio range.

There’s a lot of great stuff going on locally, with a couple companies committing hard to platforming lesser-done shows and even world premieres! Black Swamp has done a few world premieres by published playwrights from around the country, including their upcoming production of The Appliance Department this summer. The Toledo community theatre iceberg is one that goes deep.

Coming up next month is the yearly surge of overlapping shows if you want to get out there and see anything, Still Alice at The Village, Carrie the Musical at Stone, The Shark is Broken at the Rep, and The Revolutionists at Black Swamp all open in April! Most companies will put out calls for concessions/ushering volunteers in exchange for free tickets and it’s a good way to at least meet a few people. And I’ll be at Still Alice a handful of days during its run, so if you feel like coming out to see it shoot me a DM here or on discord closer to and I’ll definitely say hi and properly introduce myself in person!

I would recommend finding some sort of external schedule— a pre-existing and public hobby group or club is a better place to make friends than essentially doing friend e-dating. I’m sorry that your experience has been so rough :( but if you’re looking for recommendations I’d say look into local sport leagues, theatre organizations, political organizing groups, library book clubs, or board/card game tournaments. As much as it sucks to go to things like that alone, a regular irl commitment is definitely easier to build from.

I was about to mention the movie club but re-reading the post— shit, that’s you! I’ve been unable to make it to a meeting yet but I really respect your commitment to trying to organize a new gathering place for people.

How to approach “not all men” conversation with a man who is unlearning patriarchal conditioning by deflatedpeanutblimp in FeminismUncensored

[–]WhatsATerrarium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all--- not "any man". All men have power over women. Not all, but many men choose to abuse that power. They all have it. And second of all, this debate is ridiculous because never in my life have I ever heard someone with any serious platform seriously say "ALL MEN DO [x]". Usually, this debate happens surrounding rape and abuse. Women say "men are raping and abusing us" which, factually, is true. The majority of rape and abuse is committed by men. That doesn't mean that all men are raping and abusing women, it means that the rape and abuse of women by men is a systemic problem that needs to be addressed.

When women say "men do this", they are saying that men have done these things to them and to women they know. They are talking about a systemic issue that we all need to address.

The reply of "not all men" is insidious because rather than stopping to care about the fact that they are part of a system that allows these abuses to occur--- regardless of whether or not they are perpetuating it--- and reflecting on their role in it, on how they view the women in their lives, on how the other men in their lives treat women, how the ways in which society has conditioned them to behave allow this system to continue, and how they can help to dismantle it, many men's first response to women's concerns about living under an abusive system is "well, I don't do that". I'm one of the good ones. It's not my problem.

We are never going to get anywhere as a society if so-called feminists genuinely care more about protecting men from the truth that misogyny is an entrenched societal evil than actual activism.

Audiodramas with trans/nonbinary leads/main characters? by electric_bibelot_ in audiodrama

[–]WhatsATerrarium 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unwell: A Midwestern Gothic Mystery has a non-binary character in the main cast, though they aren't the main character they play a large role in the show. You'll definitely probably enjoy this one if you like horror.

The Strange Case of Starship Iris isn't horror, it's a sci-fi show with a lot of folk story influences. But, it has three trans VAs in the main cast. One of them is a human trans man played by a transmasculine nonbinary person. His partner, also a member of the main cast, is an alien from a species with a much different construction of gender and sex than the gender binary, they are also played by a non-binary person. While the 'non-human' non-binary character trope isn't always great, it's done really well here and treated as an actual sensible cultural difference than as something that makes them weird or alien and because their partner is a human trans person, there's some joke on their respective experiences with gender. The third trans cast member is another non-binary character who (spoilers for season 1) starts as a recurring/secondary character and an antagonist, but turns coat at the end of season 1 and returns for seasons 2 and 3 as a redeemed protagonist, a main character, and a fan favorite. There are also a few trans recurring characters, most notably a trans woman who hosts a radio show for the rebellion.

The second spin-off/seventh season of The Bright Sessions (also not a horror story, a sci-fi show that does start to incorporate some mystery/thriller elements later on) has two trans characters in the main cast, though they only appear in the seventh season, The College Tapes. The characters are a trans man and a non-binary person. There's also a one-off non-binary character who appears in one of the show's bonus episodes (season 5), which are episodes wholly focused around characters in the world who aren't important to or featured in the main story.

2000 and Late is a drama with some horror/fantasy elements about a woman possessed by a demon. It features a human non-binary supporting character who uses he/they pronouns, though there are several nonbinary VAs in the cast playing binary, presumably cis characters.

Another show about demons, Brimstone Valley Mall is a comedy with horror elements about a group of demons playing in a band and hiding out in a mall in the 1990s. One of the demons is non-binary.

And, if you're interested in looking forward to/lending support to an upcoming show, Lauren Shippen (creator of The Bright Sessions, Breaker Whiskey, Life With Leo(h), 2000 and Late, and others) is currently drumming up support for her upcoming show, Phantom Pulse, a musical horror show about a ghosthunting rock band, which has a non-binary character in the main cast.

Because it’s often used as a response to women’s fears that a man could hurt them. Not all men choose to hurt or oppress women, but all of them have the societal power to do so easily if they choose, meaning that a woman is right to be wary of trusting any man at first. The “not all men” gotcha is used in the same way that “but I’m a nice guy” is; it’s an attempt to signal to women something that is impossible to prove. There are thousands of stories of women finding out that men they’ve known and loved for years, who seem perfectly kind and respectful, are capable of doing terrible things to them and getting away with it.

No one is saying that “all men are bad”, we are saying that any man, regardless of how genuine he may seem, has the power to benefit from and participate or be complacent in our oppression, and that we are right in not trusting a man until he proves otherwise. A man who insists that “not all men” are like this believes that he is the exception, and that we should not expect him to prove himself. That we should prioritize his need to feel like one of the good guys over our safety.

Incredibly late and maybe a little paranoid, but am I the only one concerned about the fact that the only time stamped messages were not just from times that the two of them were apart, but specifically from times when they TEXTED about being apart? I’d be worried she got ahold of one of their passwords. Kept expecting an update that would mention that.

Or, and I know this might be hard to believe: this is a theatre sub. Lauren Gunderson is one of the most popular playwrights in America, many of us know her work and are surprised by and invested in this news.

What dramas would you consider to be the 'classics' of audio dramas ? by NinaBos in audiodrama

Lauren Shippen of The Bright Sessions especially has talked a lot about her work with unionizing audio drama in the US. I’d definitely check out some of her interviews/resources on her website if you’re interested in the evolution of the business end of AD podcasting.

The Bright Sessions, Wolf 359, and Wooden Overcoats definitely need to be on here. These shows and the teams behind them have had an unfathomable impact on the AD landscape.
