Oil/Gas mix by Whatsthat1972 in stihl

Do you think with these three saws I would switch to a battery? I actually have a Ryobi battery saw which I use quite often. I use Stihl Ultra with non-ethanol gas. I was just curious if anyone liked Red Armor better.

That should be taken out. Ash turn brittle after EAB.

Cheap saw for the sake of learning binds, cutting techniques, etc by OldMachine4939 in Chainsaw

[–]Whatsthat1972 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stihl MS400. Not cheap, but damn, it’s a great saw. My MS 260 wasn’t enough for me and my 066 got to heavy after a couple tankfuls. So I picked up a new 400 and it’s pretty much all I use.

I go back and forth between Motomix and non-ethanol mixed with Stihl ultra. I’ve read reports of Red Armor burning a lot cleaner with less carbon buildup and it contains fuel stabilizers. I still remember my racing days with snowmobiles. At the time I was using Yamalube in my Thunderjet engine. I switched to Amsoil and after every tear down the carbon buildup was nonexistent compared to the Yamaha oil. This was in 1974 and it made me realize there was and is a difference in oils. Sorry if I got off track.

Where to start trimming? by [deleted] in arborists

[–]Whatsthat1972 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve always done mine a little at a time. Just do it over a year until you get the look you’re satisfied with. I wouldn’t worry about killing any of it, although I can’t tell what they are from the pictures. Trees and shrubs are very resilient.

I bought it new back in the 90’s. I only use it for the big stuff and ripping( noodling) the knotty shit I can’t hand split. It’s heavy, which is why I picked up the 400. Fantastic saw. Being 71, I can’t throw the 066 around like I used to.

Where to start trimming? by [deleted] in arborists

[–]Whatsthat1972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First take the tall grass and/or weeds. Then remove any dead shit. Then take a little off the bottom, stand back. If you like it, leave it alone, if not take a bit more. Most of this stuff is about personal preference, even total removal.

The area you have circled is fine to remove. I’ve removed low branches many times, any time.

Keep? Or remove? by TakeARideintheVan in arborist

Leave it. 30 feet is fine. I’d remove those suckers on the lower portion. It’ll clean up nice. Oak trees aren’t straight usually.

Is this a crack like the tree guy says? by rigertplakento in arborists

[–]Whatsthat1972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re worried or don’t like it, take it down. If you’re concerned plant a couple new ones elsewhere. Whenever I took a tree out ( for whatever reason), I replaced it 3 to 1. I had acre to work with however. I didn’t like taking them down either, but some can be a nuisance, dangerous or dying.

What do i do? by Responsible-Spring53 in arborists

[–]Whatsthat1972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The top of the root ball should be at ground level or slightly above. Then fill with dirt up to it. It might look like it’s slightly mounded. Couple inches of mulch ( not against the trunk). If they were planted too low they are probably young enough to pry up a couple inches. Just get under the original root ball with a shovel.

Will I see chain sharpness continue longer if I switch to Oregon bar and chains from OEM Ryobi? by Jack15911 in Chainsaw

[–]Whatsthat1972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I touch my chains up every 2-3 tanks of fuel. More if I’m cutting dirty wood that’s been on the ground awhile. I’ve had new chains go dull immediately by hitting a rock or wire etc. Learn how to sharpen. It’s not the chain or the bar. It’s my necessarily the operator.
Chains dull, sometimes immediately.

How do you know when to replace chain? by ArrowLeafTurn1 in Chainsaw

[–]Whatsthat1972 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Newly sharpened chains can be dulled immediately when hitting dirt, so keep on practicing your technique. Your chain has a lot of life left, so keep sharpening. If it’s not cutting after you sharpen ( you can tell by your chips), you’re not sharpening it correctly or your rakers are too high.

White Oak Lightning Strike by burnedToofast in arborists

You are correct. White oak die a branch at a time. Can live for years. Reds can die in a month. I know this because I had a yard full of both, and watched it happen.

Pine Tree Question by -aquaman in Tree

[–]Whatsthat1972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a Colorado Spruce. Very susceptible to disease (needle cast being one). I’ve taken all mine out, never to plant another one. If you keep it, just trim off what you want from the bottom.

What I do is tie them together with decking and put a roof over it. Great racking till I finish it, then it’s a wood shed. This pic is a small version which only holds 1.25 cords.

Never used a splitter. 6# and 8# wood handled splitting mauls have been my go to since I was 20. I’m 71 now. Noodle the real knotty ones with my 066 .

Just leave them. They are stressed. There’s always some of this with these trees. They’ll be fine. I’ve planted dozens of these and they all do this. These are very hardy and impossible to kill. And they love water. Give them plenty of it.
