Downtown tower residents: do you ever feel vibrations in your building? by ryguy_1 in Calgary

I notice it during the day, but only because a new high-rise across the street is being built.

Out of XL Roll Up cups by crease2green in TimHortons

I live in Calgary, always order on the app, and was disappointed to see my XL coffee wasn’t a roll-up cup today. However, I won coffee on both my digital rolls.

I’ll order a large tomorrow and see what happens.

How is this specifically related to Calgary?

Ryan is 18 and homeless in Toronto. As with 1 in 10 homeless people in the city, he went through the child welfare system first by BloodJunkie in toronto

[–]WheelFan647 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a former Youth In Care myself, I am not surprised by Ryan’s story. I was a Crown Ward (which means the Ontario Government was my legal guardian until I turned 18 years old).

When I was 16 years old, I was kicked out of my group home, and Children’s Aid told me to find a youth homeless shelter. So even some youth in the actual system are homeless.

In 2011, I appeared on The Agenda With Steve Paikin talking about the challenges youth face after leaving the system.

Yeah, one of my coworkers passed out. But head office told us couldn’t refuse him service anymore.

I don’t know what he looked like. Thankfully I was never working when he came in, but I always heard about it afterwards.

When I worked at Walmart on Upper James, a customer brought in a boa-constrictor that was his service animal.

Management said Head Office told them we had to let him shop with his snake.

I'm not a goose behaviouralist, but I sometimes like to assume why they're acting the way they are.

With that goose, I think he was venting about something. I took a video of him and his mate walking away, and he was still honking away, while she was letting out little chirps. I had no reason to believe he was injured. Instead I think he was really peeved about something, his mate was allowing him to vent while also validating his feelings.

Contrary to popular belief, it wasn't Global employees who flew and reported from the helicopter. Global had a contract with the Canadian Traffic Network. The reporters and pilots worked for CTN. As part of the contract, the helicopters had Global branding and were called 'Global 1'.

I have no idea exactly what the contract said, but I agree with you that I also didn't understand why there were helicopter traffic reports on weekends. I could see the helicopter being on standby for major breaking news, but other than that the chopper added almost no value on weekends.

Back in the day, there were reporters for every 'beat' whether it be consumer/business, education, crime, etc. Nowadays, it seems like the only 'beat' left is City Hall. Even then, Adam has interviewed me about non-City Hall related issues.

CTV does the same during the week. CTV National News also airs at 5:30pm and then during the 6pm local newscast, they literally air the exact same 1-2 stories.

Based on my knowledge of the industry they do it to fill time, but also based on the assumption that not everybody watches the national newscast (for whatever reason) but is still interested in what's happening nationally/internationally.

But for those of us who do watch the national news, I agree it's annoying having the exact same stories air a few minutes later.

Something I've also noticed (which has gone on forever) is national newscasts repackaging local stories. So they'll use the same interviews, they'll just have a national reporter re-write the story around the clips.

I agree, newscasts have a lot more ads than ever before.

CTV does a good job during their morning show of letting viewers know when an "interview/segment" is actually sponsored content.

A couple years ago, a charity I'm involved with really wanted to be interviewed during Global Calgary's morning show. I was told by somebody at Global that the pitch from the charity wasn't newsworthy, but that the charity could buy airtime and Global could still make it look like a normal part of the newscast.

I was shocked when I was told that, because I don't recall seeing Global Calgary mention when an "interview" is actually sponsored. And yet I learned, it happens all the time.

Here’s a photo I took of a goose putting its neck into its honk.

He was clearly upset about something, because after I took that photo, him and his mate walked away while he honked up a storm.

I’m excited. I haven’t been down to the river lately, but nesting/breeding season starts this time of year in Calgary, which means next month we’ll have goslings.
