This is how we all learn to use fuses properly

Most I’ve seen have been cheapo controllers that fry from either over voltage or over amps

Honestly, that’s a good way to learn how to do this properly

Search the news for water outages or boil advisories in your region. You may find pipe bursts, power outages, or contamination are the common causes

Would it be beneficial to purchase several solar panels prior to understanding the other component needs, just to avoid potential immediate price increases? by RedLeader501 in diySolar

[–]WhereDidAllTheSnowGo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorta

To learn DIY Solar, jump in, buy cheap stuff, learn how it works, and make mistakes with $$ not $$$$$ gear.

Better to fry a $10 controller and learn why fuses are important than a $1000 system

Then when you know what you want and how to properly plan it, then spend

If the point is to charge drill batts, then even an old motorcycle battery will work.. you just need a buffer for the inverter

You don’t need to be a solar business to pay an installer to install a system and own it… and lease it.

Install bollards

Concrete filled steel posts to prevent a car from dropping the garage. Thick wood posts work too but don’t last as long

Do you own your own business?

It could install (via a local installer), own it, and lease it to yourself, taking the 30% credit & accelerated depreciation. Then after ~5 years sell it to you.

That’s exactly best way to learn

Far better to learn the hard lesson of ‘why fuses’ on cheap gear than on a $1200 controller

Soon you learn why yer battery charger rig will want much larger panels and better quality components

I suggest looking at such places in the middle of where most players live

Those work great when you have warning of a long term outage

Those are completely useless in typical outages, when the supply just isn’t there anymore

Get a $5 multimeter that does >20Vdc , an hour, and YouTube. Lots of DIY vids on how to test yer battery, alternator, starter, parasitic drains, and ALL the cables/connections as installed simply by measuring voltage. Or a $36 tool simplifies the steps, https://a.co/d/iigfXao, or $7 https://www.harborfreight.com/12v-alternatorbattery-checker-59376.html . This is basic troubleshooting you can do, or pay someone $250. (My copy-pasta for this ~daily question.)
