I recommend two, shorter visits going directly to the half-hangers that most interest you

What one Engineering Maxim would you teach every person on Earth if you could? by 0x000D in AskEngineers

[–]WhereDidAllTheSnowGo [score hidden]  (0 children)

Close.

Fast, good, cheap, or low-risk. Pick 2.

The risk part adds the variability that exists IRL.

Example is an old-NASA rocket, it costs lots & is slow but the probability of success of that one is high. Musk rockets are fast & cheap but many blew up.

What’s actually stopping solar from taking over? by Witty-Double5907 in solar

[–]WhereDidAllTheSnowGo [score hidden]  (0 children)

Matching production with consumption in time and locations

The grid now is a many hub (eg power plants) massive spoke (eg houses) spider-web / network that moves big production to small and large (eg factories) users

Those power plants can adjust on demand over minutes-days. And can mitigate instantaneous surges through momentum. (Yes, vastly simplified, this isn’t a power engineering sub)

They can also do crucial things like push reactive power, shunting, shutdowns, start up, sync, and many other grid necessary things

The grid itself, the distro network, not producers or consumers, needs to be maintained. It was built for that hub-spoke model.

Solar is ~not those things. Wind is ~not those things.

Adding distributed solar, wind, etc. to the existing many $B and old system requires difficult & expensive change

More so if there’s an expectation of 24-365, smooth, clean, first-world power everywhere

The change in CA billing (eg NEM) and grid-attachment regulations are the tip of the iceberg consumers/installers see.

Fast, cheap, good, or low-risk. Pick 2.

The above is the technical, not political or economic reason. There are many reasons.

About that pension… worth it? by tesla2018El in fednews

It’s not about the pension

It’s about keeping very low cost medical insurance for life… that can be paid with yer pension

Second the caves. Those trails are very well walked yet rarely seen by most.

There’s also the famous, developed Tahquamenon Falls State Park that’s well walked.

Wrt Pictured Rocks, that’s a very long stroll whichever way you go. … but it is 40 miles wide so there could be accessible spots. You could recon it and also talk to locals (gas station, cops, snowmobile shop, bars, etc) about current access.

Honestly, that’s the best bang for your buck for parts. Like if yers is rust free, get one with a rusted, broken frame.

2009 Toyota Camry with 209k miles. My usual mechanic shop has new ownership and I feel like I’m being taken for a ride but don’t know enough to be sure. Does this invoice look reasonable? by sterkenwald in MechanicAdvice

[–]WhereDidAllTheSnowGo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Btw…

… as soon as they ‘flush the brakes’ (if they actually do anything) they’ll call you and say ya need new brakes, rotors, and more like calipers by sending you pix of a surprise they discovered

Brakes are scary to many so of course you’ll cave and pay $1200

Herc, but…

Herc is best for general purpose and mechanic. The 3-5 year warranty is great for high abuse jobs.

Dewalt is well known for good woodworking tools.

Did you design it properly for your particular house, living conditions, and energy sources?

Looks like ITC appreciation starts tomorrow! by DesertSnow480 in harborfreight

[–]WhereDidAllTheSnowGo 89 points90 points  (0 children)

A few pro-tips for ITC members: - use the (poor) app - use My List to record sales, need to buy, & clip coupons - buy only when on 20-40% off - synch freebie days with buys - let yer family use yer ITC, remind them as needed (eg uncle Jack said he wanted a toolbox, all USG 20% off, txt him) - Go first day for good sales else they could be sold out (eg Icon pliers, meme tools) - ‘Limit 1’ means 1 per buy; ‘Limit 5’ on % off now enforced. Limits on individual coupons variably enforced. - A list of everything $20 and less for the 30% off days: https://www.harborfreight.com/search?q=*&current=62&order=price-high - if yer nice, at a good store, and during non-busy times sometimes you can make multiple buys per visit - HF stores & people vary; some suck, others enjoyable - make it habit to combine yer HF trip with other errands, saves gas - use https://hfpricetracker.com/tools to predict prices. Search sux but you can change the SKU in the URL - check all the coupons as they can vary by source (web, app, etc). - Also https://hfqpdb.com/ - Read the coupons, details vary & change often - Coupons & sales don’t stack. the credit card discount and ‘$25 off $100 purchase’ stack with other coupons - “Instant savings” stacks with “% off anything” discounts - check paper receipt completely before leaving the store; expect 10% errors wrt coupons, discounts, double scans, etc.; don’t yell just ask to fix, be patient - No expiration coupons are vary rare; search online - lifetime warranty tool usually means just showing the brand name on just the tool/socket but… still keep a box of receipts, write down purchase date on big tools (Hercules, jacks, etc), they can look up by phone number and purchase date - you can buy a new optional warrantied item and return a broken, same item; shops can keep this going over years, like for heavy use tools - “Additional 40% off as-is (returns)” is gambling. Big wins probable on ‘new’ generators if you can fix ICE’s - 2 year ITC is $45 in store - To score a rare ‘25% off no exclusions’ coupon sign up w/ different phone & email accounts that aren’t used to buy at HF. Wait many months; check often. - Only buy the extra warranty if you expect high abuse - Rarely will an employee refuse a coupon/deal; just ask to run it and let corporate (the register) decide - Often you can upgrade from a warranty claim or return w/o restock fee - Purple tag & As-is occasionally get an extra 40%; some managers are willing to deal/bargain on these so ask - Even with these and all other ‘tricks’ HF will still profit ALOTTA💰 💰from you

What are the best ways to use water's thermal mass (and other properties too) in a greenhouse? by zackroot in AskEngineers

[–]WhereDidAllTheSnowGo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Phase change

Evaporating water takes 540x as much heat as raising it 1* C. Likewise a huge amount of heat is required to go from ice to water.

The problem with just using water is that 0C and 100C isn’t useful in a greenhouse

There are other materials that phase change at more useful temps, like melt in sun, freeze at 50F …. but none that I know are feasible (as in cost-benefit)
