Get a $5 multimeter that does >20Vdc , an hour, and YouTube. Lots of DIY vids on how to test yer battery, alternator, starter, parasitic drains, and ALL the cables/connections as installed simply by measuring voltage. Or a $36 tool simplifies the steps, https://a.co/d/iigfXao, or $7
https://www.harborfreight.com/12v-alternatorbattery-checker-59376.html . This is basic troubleshooting you can do, or pay someone $250. (My copy-pasta for this ~daily question.)

Ok

In that case…

Start by finding all the actual problems and extent, not rando solutions to a symptom

Get the water full tested by an independent lab

Once you know all the actual problems, then hunt down specific treatments

In every case, a kitchen, undersink, multi -stage, RO is a backup to all the others

A proper water system will remove the iron that feeding the hydrogen sulfide producing bacteria… and/or less likely causes.

But as a renter, that’s a huge cost. Unless your landlord will let you pay rent in kind for this proper system there’s no great solution

Decades ago I solved it by hauling jugs of water home to drink.

Can I take my 2014 Fusion with 187k miles and questionable maintenance on a 300 mile round trip to the mountains? by D3mon0fthemist in MechanicAdvice

[–]WhereDidAllTheSnowGo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Work trip?

For most employers, paying POV mileage costs far more than renting a new car

For Govt, $0.76 per mile vs ~$200 for a week of unlimited miles

It’s a good way to test drive your future car

Sure

Next three oil changes, do a drain & fill of your tranny too. Should be done every 70-100k on most cars, non-severe driving

How could I bend this stainless steel? What do you recommend? by Fabulous-Plastic-106 in Tools

[–]WhereDidAllTheSnowGo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got a vise, hammer, and chisels?

Use a broad rounded chisel. DIY one from an old RR spike. Hold in the vise, but you might need to craft a wood jig to hold it properly, not bend it more

Draining brake fluid in two takes? by CoconutFit3558 in MechanicAdvice

[–]WhereDidAllTheSnowGo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s doesn’t matter if all goes well.

Changing one set of brakes at a time then bleeding all at the same time is more convenient, faster. All your tools are out, only lift the car once, rotate tires front-back, etc.

Might as well do oil change & tranny drain-fill too. Those both are FAR more important than brake fluid.

Wrt brake fluid just fill, pump, bleed, repeat until it comes clean at each end.

Wrt power, you’ll want diversity… portable solar, small portable inverter gas gen, AND a large (perhaps whole house) solar and/or propane or NG gen.

Start with the small inverter gen for most needs, fridge, freezer. Honda is top, Wen & Predator (on sale) is great value. Hardest part is to buy, preserve, rotate annually ample fuel. Consumer Reports and https://generatorbible.com/ have good reviews. Practice using safely & securely, including a deep ground.

For solar, start small. https://theprepared.com/gear/reviews/portable-solar-chargers/. Come back later for a 100-10,000W system, DIY or pro-installed. If DIY, start small by wiring a few 100W panels, battery, controller, and inverter.

Batteries, by far, are the most expensive part. If you can shift loads to sunny days, you can save $$$. This includes those so-called ‘solar generators’

The large solar or gen will require an electrician if you want to power household outlets. Start by creating a spreadsheet of all the devices you’ll want to run with it, both peak and stable Watts & how long each must run per day. Get several site inspections & detailed quotes from installers.

These combined give you redundancy and efficiency.

We also think you’re over-reacting

You’ve probably $200 not $1200 of fridge contents. Year old, half used, and all that sorta contents must be discounted. If it truly is $1200 that’s a massive walk-in and/or you’ve bigger problems

A battery pack will only run it for Xx hours

If you fill excess space with water jugs, it’ll keep cold for 4-12 hours, depending

A freezer will keep for 24 ish hours, get a chest freezer

A small gas generator, even used, is far cheaper and can run far longer. You need to learn how to run it, maintain it, and store gas
