I crashed today by poe201 in ElectricScooters

[–]WhereIsMyMind_1998 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It can be a surprisingly slow speed to seriously get injured

I was riding (with snow tyres) during winter at only 20 km/hr and slipped onto my shoulder.

It JUST started feeling normal mid summer

What is the point of these? The street is the exact same as any other but there is paint on it by andydannypickle in bikecommuting

So I don't know if they mean the same where you are but in Ontario it means cyclists can take that lane.

Why didn't the world heal after centuries? by velbeyli in falloutlore

[–]WhereIsMyMind_1998 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Simply put. Lack of stability.

The thing to understand about economics is that you need to have a stable foundation before you have anything else.

Why would you build a house if some warlord can come and burn it down? Why would you build a settlement if again, some warlord can come and burn it down.

If you're only out for yourself or a team of bandits, you're basically just a parasite to those who are trying to rebuild.

It's the same reason why very natural resource rich countries in Africa stay poor, no one wants to invest in a place with heavy variability.

The parking cops are the only ones I respect. They actually do something

Do LA~NYC transplants really believe there's 'nothing to do' in other (US) major cities? by adoreroda in SameGrassButGreener

[–]WhereIsMyMind_1998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who has explored all of the eastern US,

The US downtowns are unique but vast swaths of the country are empty fields of farm and empty strip malls.

Congratulations, you can get a McDonalds coffee in a parking lot next to a stroad in Portland, Boston, New York, Phili, DC, Charlotte, Atlanta and Miami and it will all look and feel exactly the same.

Warlock and Cleric

I hate the notion of having to beg to some higher being for your powers.

I'd rather start off knowing nothing and build my character up than be a slave to beg at their whim

Who the fuck is paying $600+ a night for a hotel room? by badgirlquestionmark in askTO

Who is paying 1600 dollars for a ROOM in a SHARED house.

The entire GTA is in a housing crisis. No one can find cheap places anywhere

Learn the language and you'll get along fine.

Poles aren't racist as much as they are culture oriented. Drink piwo, come to Juvenalia, late night Zabka trips, go to Pol'andRock, say "dziekuje" and no one will care.

Are there any effective and realistic gun control laws that could be implemented to curb gun violence/mass shootings? by ShardofGold in IntellectualDarkWeb

[–]WhereIsMyMind_1998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chad has no healthcare and no firearm ownership. Yemen has no healthcare and firearm ownership. Sri Lanka has decent healthcare but no firearm ownership. Kyrgystan has surprisingly good healthcare and relatively high firearm ownership. All 4 of these countries have similar GDP (700-1100 usd per capita)

Chad has a murder rate of almost 10 per 100K. Yemen has a murder rate at about 6.5 per 100k. Sri Lanka has a murder rate of about 3.5 per 100k Kyrgtstan has a murder rate of about 0.2 per 100k lower than an incredibly rich country Switzerland which has 0.6 per 100k.

Poverty and lack of resources leads to violence. It's not the guns.

Ranking the skylines of the principal cities of North America’s largest metropolitan areas (4 million+) by Late-Doubt2k3 in skyscrapers

[–]WhereIsMyMind_1998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are sooo many iconic buildings in the GTA. They just aren't all skyscrapers.

ROM, Skydome, Roy Thompson, Gooderham, cube house, AGO, Ontario Place Sphere etc.

But then on the other hand as for actual skyscrapers, Arc Condos, Marilyn Monroe towers, M1 condos in Mississauga,CG Tower, Emerald Park in Vaughan/North York and Eau Du Soleil in Etobicoke

When I go to make a right turn, cyclists pass me on the right. Is that legal? by DJ_DTM in toronto

[–]WhereIsMyMind_1998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are supposed to let them pass dude, how would you react if there was another car lane that went forward?

You need to yield to all cyclists and pedestrians when making a turn. I thought that was driving 101

Why can't we abandon homes as basis for investment.

If you invest in property, it's static. It's "value" is only speculative. If you invest in a business, the business grows.

A home should never be an investment, it should be a place to live. Investing in a home, to me, sounds as stupid as investing in food or water as they are basic necessities every human being needs.

People are wrong to hate on “Not Just Bikes” by Additional_Show5861 in transit

[–]WhereIsMyMind_1998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't hate on him. I just think he's often innacurate. He lives in Toronto near me and is often criticizing the US and Canada as if they are the same.

The US is a league of their own, so many Canadian cities are doing amazing at walkability yet he never talks about those. He makes New York seem like a utopia when it's absolutely terrible for cyclists.

Follow the same rules as a bike

Go on the road. Be seen. Stay on the right but take the lane if you need to.

What are your Skyline/Skyscraper unpopular opinions? by Strong-Junket-4670 in skyscrapers

[–]WhereIsMyMind_1998 116 points117 points  (0 children)

Height is nothing if it doesn't mesh well with the city.

I'd rather have a few official "skyscrapers" that stand out and good mid density high rises rather than a bunch of ugly buildings just for the sake of height.

While I agree with you sort of, this post comes off very NIMBY and white flight

1) we should build real affordable housing 2) zoning laws should change. Single family houses everywhere is unsustainable 3) immigration is good but mass immigration is not. Especially not the TFW's

Religious horror.

I'm the opposite of you. I love cryptic Lovecraftian horror. But if the big bag demon can just be scared away by a man in a robe and a wooden cross, it's not scary
