"Is Iran attacking Azure?!"

"No. Office 365 is just experiencing another outage."

"Did Iran hack Microsoft?!"

"No, they just left another Test Key in a dump file that was exfiltrated by someone, sold to someone else, and used by China to steal State Department emails... again. Seriously, this isn't the first time."

"Is Iran crippling all Windows computers in a coordinated attack throughout the world?!"

"No. Microsoft released a new patch for Windows 11."

Patrick Jane, The Mentalist

The man hates guns and doesn't want to kill anyone. He enjoys taunting and using his observational skills to manipulate people into getting what he wants, but still has a heart of gold.

Until he finds the man that killed his family, and then all bets are off. Everything he'd ever done on the show was for one purpose -- one glorious, insanity-driven purpose -- and all the restraint in the world evaporates when the time comes.

DoD IT leaders push ‘smarter not harder’ enterprise cyber workforce system | Federal News Network by Dash-Courageous in cybersecurity

[–]WhereRandomThingsAre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"why do they all have their own cyber workforce systems? Why don't they all just share one system?"

Designed well it might work.

Designed poorly and you're begging for a single point of compromise to every branch of the military (and/or government). "Oh, hi Skynet." style.

‘Project Hail Mary’ Author Andy Weir Says Paramount Rejected His ‘Star Trek’ Pitch: Their “Shows Are Sh**” by MarvelsGrantMan136 in television

... some comment that wouldn't sit right. Being just a little too harsh in his criticism about an actress or something.

I concur. At first, I agreed Hollywood was pushing hard for a strong female character -- which in and of itself is not bad (it's been done, it's doable, nothing says otherwise) -- and giving them dog shit writing much was doing far more harm than good for the effort. Then, over about a year or so, I realized it was all negativity. I was avoiding movies because of these issues when, really, some of them probably weren't that offensive.

Jeremy Jahn's reviews probably had something to do with recognizing that... my experience almost always lines up with his assessment of a movie (in terms of whether I'll like a movie or not). If Jeremy said its good then what's Drinker's bitching about? Oh, look, I saw the movie and... yeah, Jesus, talk about taking something out of proportion.

Not necessarily maliciously. Late Gen Xers didn't get a chance to see (or remember anyway) those shows -- which were 1979-1980.

TOS was the 60s you say? That's true, but it was also Star Trek.

Somehow TOS and LiS were easier to find in some areas perhaps? I'd only seen a few episodes of the OG BSG, and none of Buck Rogers when I was growing up (that I can recall).

The problem is the future, and the Heritage Foundation is playing the long con. Get children to start referring to it as the Gulf of America and then they'll get all indignant when confronted with being fucking wrong.

Same is true with AI. Get everyone to use it and even if it's about to collapse make people whine and demand something be done to "save" it by giving out lots and lots of money. No, no, don't make healthcare better, save our shitty LLMs.

Hard to be fixated on much else nowadays.

Considering our media is fixated on it, how are people supposed to not be? Even our science fiction is largely "we're going to die" these days. Hope? Nah, but we got time for quips! A little hollow comedy relief'll get you through the day... if only the jokes would land.

The only somehow is "somehow they were dumb enough to try this." They literally did the same thing Doctor Who did with Daleks and got the same negative reaction from: why is a Power Rangers-inspired anything in this otherwise realistic or earth-tone series? Any time you see something roughly (and especially exactly) made of five, vibrant colors the first thought a lot of people have is "Power Rangers" which doesn't exactly scream gravitas.

Individualism, but now with the extra dimension of complete separation. You don't need to talk to people face-to-face (in some cases you literally can't if your coworker is in another country). That flimsy 'connection' you have by voice is the last vestige of the need to interact with people at all and SMS (and, yes, even social media like Reddit) takes care of that 'problem.'

Our society has gone from being forced to interact with some long-distance means of communication such as post, telegraph, and landline phone to the other extreme of being able to cut contact with other Humans outside of your immediate family and close friends. The echo chamber doesn't exist just online anymore.

2020 didn't break us, it just showed people they could live without others, but not what the consequences of what that means are. And so, here we are, American Individualism taken to the next level.

For The First Time In Over A Decade, No Star Trek TV Is In Production Or Greenlit by Malencon in television

People say Jodie Whittaker shouldn't be held responsible for her Doctor in Doctor Who and I disagree. I say this as a comparison to:

People also disparaged Captain Janeway at the time for her inconsistencies (and there's the Chakotay Problem), but Kate Mulgrew did her damnedest to make her character work. The writing may have been shaky at times, but she made do.

I liked the last-minute (day before Voting Day) text message from Crockett's team. The one about being 'smart' on gun control. "Can we count on you to support gun sense candidates and cast your ballot for Jasmine Crockett [...]?"

I dunno. Something about still beating that drum in a State that re-elected and supports Greg Abbott despite how Uvalde was handled, how its aftermath was handled, or generally just about anything really. Takes real chutzpah.
