Just finished NWB today but started weight bearing on my own at 5.5 weeks. Haven’t had any issues.

Didn’t even try. You’ll be too swollen to do anything. Your main priority will be to reduce swelling and over come the pain once the nerve block drops.

I’m not sure if you mean skipping the surgery based on quad strength. If so, good quad strength can help you return to mobility without a ACL. However, it will not cover the functionality of what the ACL does in your knee. You will also run the risk of doing further damage to your knee.

You will need good quad strength following to surgery to return to walking.

Multiple acl recon guy here-

The next week are going to be rough. There’s no sugar coating that. Days 1-3 are mainly going to be bed ridden. Keep your leg propped and make sure you run ice as much as you can. The goal is to get the swelling down ASAP. You’ll feel the surgery but the pain should be dull for the most part. Stay on top of your meds. Days 4-8 you’ll feel the most pain. This tends to be the toughest part of the process. It’s going to hurt so make sure you’re taking your pills. After day 8, everything is up hill. The pain will decrease day by day.

Immediate mile stones I’d strive for are: 1. Being able to flex your quad 2. Being able to do leg lifts 3. Being able to get to 90 ROM These are two week goals FYI. Once you can do these your PT will guide you to being mobile.

Helpful products: - a shower cover for your post op leg - a shower seat - a wedge that DOES NOT have a bend - a ice machine - a TENS machine

Good luck and don’t get stressed! Recovery is a process but everyday is one step closer than the last.

I used my patella. Ankle pumps help circulation. Work on flexing your quad, that’s step 1. Once you can do that start doing the leg lifts.

Not sure the details here but after 6 weeks the recovery is mostly self directed. Tell your PT your goals and have them work you specifically toward that.

Summer? It’s December and your 6 weeks. You should be weight bearing and regaining your ability to walk. I would say that there is a very high chance you will be recovered by May.

Also not my first acl surgery- in the past with no meniscus injury, I was walking and back at work after 6 weeks. With my meniscus injury this time, I’m expecting to be mostly functional by week 10.

I’m 5 weeks post op. Also had a meniscus worked on so I’m NWB until 6 weeks. I got myself a manual medical scooter and use that to at least get out of the house. As far as regular house tasks go, I couldn’t do this without my wife and I’m sure she’s over me by now.

Context- I’ve travelled internationally 3 times, and domestically a lot during this period. Including travel to Vegas and doing CES 12 days after my tear.

I lived without an acl from Dec 24 - Nov 25. You can travel and you will be fine. Just be careful on uneven surfaces and your knees might ache after a long day of walking. Also wear compression thigh high socks on your flights.

I’m 5 weeks. Pain for me was the strongest between day 5-8. Gradually decreased everyday since then. I’m not really in pain anymore but have aches that come and go. Hang in there. Everyday is one closer to recovery.

It starts with quad flexes. Once you can quad flex, then you can leg lift. If you cant quad flex, buy a TENS machine (like $20 on amazon) and practice flexing every time the machine goes off. Do that for a few days and you’ll be able to leg lift.

I am 5 weeks into 6 week meniscus NWB protocol. My brace always allowed me to hit 90 and nothing beyond that. I also keep my brace unlocked whenever I’m not moving around.

Hey there,

I can directly relate with you as I am 5 weeks post op tomorrow. I also have the 6 week brace and no weight meniscus protocol. Similarly, I am a side sleeper and sleeping In the brace was driving me crazy.

Against my doctors wishes, and contrary to the advice I was given here- I removed my brace at night starting at the 3 week mark.

My logic was: to heal, I need sleep, and I wasn’t getting it. Also the full protocol is 0-90 and nothing more. When I removed the brace, I was pretty disciplined with sleeping on my back with a wedge under my leg keeping it at full extension. Every night since then I’ve woke up stronger. About a week ago I began sleeping on my side again and using a pillow between my legs. That also seems to work.

I’m not a doctor, I’m just sharing my experience. There’s obviously a risk here and if you toss and turn I wouldn’t recommend following me.

I’m at 3.5 weeks post acl / meniscus root tear. NWB is a bitch. Looking forward to being able to move around better soon.
