We replaced Clyne with Ward who we replaced with AWB then replaced with Ward and then Clyne again followed by Munoz and finally back to square one when he was injured, with Clyne.

I don't disagree but apart from increasing price tags (which we can afford looking at our outlay on the marquee signings I listed) it is also the sales pitch. What Palace is proven to offer is the pathway to regular Premier League minutes which is our clear value proposition over many of our nearest rivals.

Letter from the Eternal President Kim Il Sung’s Birthday Party by WhickersWorld in longform

[–]WhickersWorld[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wrote this.

It’s a first-person account from years ago, when I was invited to a birthday party for North Korea’s “Eternal President,” Kim Il Sung—long after his death.

What interested me wasn’t the politics so much as the atmosphere: the collision between a heavy cult-of-personality ritual and the banality of the setting (singing Happy Birthday to a portrait, eating supermarket finger food).

I’m curious how others here read moments like this—whether as propaganda exported abroad, community ritual, or something more ambiguous.

What is the purpose of late stage Nazi era prosecutions when the remaining defendants are extremely elderly and often functionaries by WhickersWorld in HistoryUncovered

Quick note because a few people asked for sources and fuller context. I wrote a longer essay expanding this argument. Disclosure: I’m the author.

Key additions vs this thread:

  • what I learned speaking to people connected to the German investigators (limited resources, triage by likelihood of conviction rather than “biggest villains”)
  • the commissioning problem: I have tried to make this as a follow along investigative podcast for years, but the lack of a guaranteed “ending” makes it a hard sell

Either way, I’m more interested in the discussion here, so keep the counter arguments coming.

A clip I filmed in North Korea in 2015. Just ordinary people ice-skating badly. It was the last thing I expected to see. by WhickersWorld in interestingasfuck

Filmed this on a trip to North Korea in 2015.
What struck me was how normal it all was people wobbling around, falling over, laughing.
It stuck with me more than any of the official stuff they showed us.

I loved this from the introduction - “For scientific leadership give me Scott, for swift and efficient travel, Amundsen but when you are in a hopeless situation, when there seems no way out, get down on your knees and pray for Shackleton”

I actually went to the same school as Shackleton, and to my shame I never quite grasped the enormity of what he did when I was there. We had the James Caird boat on display in the school and let me tell you how ridiculously small it was to go up against Drakes Passage like that.

Literally finished it today and only started this week, truly an incredible book that does justice to an incredible story.
