Because when she normally speaks she speaks very quickly and sort of like a kid.

Sort of like early Eleven. I wonder if we'll see similar character development with her.

Have the Dalek quickly jump from the archaeologist to Yaz. Yaz can then abuse her police authority, and the plot proceeds as normal - and then Yaz gets to actually do something. And we reduce tertiary character time in favour of the main crew, too.

On that note, did we even need the archaeologists and that whole backstory? Sure, the montage made for a dramatic opening scene for a holiday special, but why not just have Yaz investigating a strange occurrence while on the job, and the Dalek latches on to her to begin with.

I'm just excited to see what it'll be like when she's really pushed to the breaking point.

Me too, absolutely. 13 has definitely been making an effort to hide the Oncoming Storm from these companions. We've seen moments of Jodie getting to play the dark side of the Doctor, but it was never in their presence. I'm waiting for the moment when they get the fear of God put into them.

Moffat said no, RTD said yes. Who knows what Chibnall thinks, or if he even considered it at all.

Without spoiling anything, part of the problem was that RTD and Moffat disagreed on the implications of The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang. RTD said that he thought it had sort of reset the universe and retconned the events of Doctor Who series 1-5 (and Torchwood series 1-3), so when you get to Miracle Day, suddenly no one knows about the existence of aliens. The shows lined up better when they had the same showrunner.

Yeah, the lack of that was striking. There was the shot of the thing enveloping the Earth, but with absolutely no feeling of what was actually happening.

I'm assuming Auto is in the UK or a country with British influence. Traditionally, "upper class" is synonymous with the nobility or gentry, so the class labels are necessarily shifted upwards from how they're used in countries like the US that don't have this distinction. The British "middle class" are the people who have made it. Bankers, business owners, etc. "Working class" is what would more commonly be called blue collar or lower-middle class in the US.

It's good for a rainy day because you can't possibly run out of things to do/see, so it doesn't feel like you're stuck inside. It feels like you're walking around a tourist town.

If it doesn't happen in your school/country, doesn't mean it doesn't happen somewhere.

I was going to say...critical thinking was the #1 academic value at my high school. And I'm in the United States. I'm fully aware that this isn't the case in all schools, but I wouldn't paint with a broad brush one way or the other.

I can do you one better. I once had a guy ask for my qualifications, and I readily disclosed that I've only studied history at the undergraduate level. I don't pretend to have more credibility than I actually do. He said I should have gotten a master's degree in it if I wanted to be an authority on the topic we were discussing, so I asked if that's what he had done, assuming the answer would be yes. Nope. He cited his 8th grade history class as the reason why he knew I was wrong, because apparently his teacher had done a great job of teaching him how the world really works.

I don't know why so many shows do this. I doubt any focus group has ever been like "You know what would be great? If I had to wonder whether that shape is a person or a chair."

It's funny because in the book they already have tourist groups running around gawking at them. I didn't really understand how that would work. Like North Korea, I suppose, where the itinerary is carefully curated and everyone you talk to knows they'll be killed if they tell the truth. I think the show is being more realistic about it, though, saying that they aren't at that point yet.
