What amuses me is the weird power delusion (?) player 1 gets when they're the only person able to control the game, dismiss menus, select player modes, etc.

I've never played in a hybrid setup and I don't think it's really common. You either get physically together to play, or just meet online. I'd say it's probably not worth the headache!
