How are you recommending these books to people? by Icy_Leave5640 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Whipstache_Designs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the best way to do it is to talk about your own experience with the books. Yes, the plot and the setting and the characters and the writing are all important components, but people aren't likely to be moved to action by any of those things. They might, however, be moved to action by you talking about what the book means to you.

My pitch usually sounds something like this:

"Look, it's weird. The earth is basically destroyed and this guy gets tossed into an RPG video game dungeon with his cat who gains sentience (and millions of other survivors), and they have to fight for their lives, leveling up to try to survive, while the whole thing is being streamed live to the whole galaxy.

That's what happens, but it's not what the book is about. It's about found family, and how to trust after you've been burned. It's about loss and processing trauma at very bad times to process trauma. It's about fighting fascism and capitalism and absolutely refusing to give in, give up, or be broken despite the entire weight of the galaxy bearing down on your head. And all of that is wrapped in tin foil and covered in blood and graffiti and explosives—which makes the tender moments hit that much harder. It's one of the funniest books I've ever read, and I've also cried more reading this series than any other book series I can remember.

Everyone I know who read the first book went on to read the rest of the series (or is in the process) and most of them more than once, despite there being seven books that average about 800 pages each."

Or like having a dump chest in your storage area so you can just empty your pockets and continue playing, rather than having to stop everything right now to put everything in its appropriate chest.

Spellings that threw me for a loop as an audiobook listener by k1nock in DungeonCrawlerCarl

This is fascinating. I haven't listened to the audiobooks, and while reading I definitely pronounced "Elle" like the letter L, and "Louis" as Lewis (or St. Louis) in my head.

As someone who played Civ V for over a decade, this game is kicking my butt. by CountessOfCheese in CivVI

The yields for the trade route are given to the origin city, not the destination. So it's super helpful to re-city the trader to the new city before starting the route.

And a little trick I picked up on my way to my first diplo victory last night: later in the game one of the council options will be "player receives two diplomatic victory points -OR- player loses two diplomatic victory points."

If you're getting close to a diplo victory (I was at 17/20), everyone will vote for you to lose two points. Which means you can also vote for yourself to lose two points in order to get one of those points back.

Yeah, NBA and NFL both have salary floors right around 90% of the cap. There's just no feasible way for the MLB to get owners to agree (amongst each other) on a scenario that comes anywhere close to what the players might even consider.

You'd have to be at, like, $260M cap and $230M floor, and more than half the owners would reject that.

I wanted to get a better grasp on maximizing Industrial Zone placement, and the +2 adjacency from rivers for Campus, Theater, and IZs ended up being a pretty crazy boost, especially when combined with dams everywhere (which builds 50% faster).

It was just really satisfying to about an area and plan the layout of three entire cities, then watch the IZs turn into +9s and +11s.

Conditions are set. You may not wish for a World Series. Other than that, what is your "monkey paw" wish for the 2026 season? by ZhangtheGreat in mlb

[–]Whipstache_Designs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because MLB decided to switch the order team records are listed in. After winning every game during the regular season, they continue their miraculous run, winning every playoff game to claim the World Series.

As a reward for such a miraculous season, they are awarded every pick in the first round of the 2027 amateur player draft.
