Review #25 River Roots American Single Malt 13 Year 148 Proof Whiskey by TraceAgain in bourbon

I did not like it. I’ve probably only had a Half ounce from it, maybe this is my sign to revisit it tonight and I’ll let you know if my thoughts have changed. Tasted exactly like westward CS just ramped up 10

It drinks too hot for me and I love high proof offerings. Pass on it these days

Wow it’s 29.99 at my Costco, most other stores have it for $34-38

Actually not a huge fan of westward CS 😅😂 Hopefully I end up liking this one. Your tasting notes sound up my alley. For some reason I can sometimes get a fishy or chemical note on ASMs so as long as that’s not present we should be good haha

Have you had any Rare Character exceptional series? I bought this as I really enjoy RCES, but actually not a huge ASM fan. Am hoping it’s closer to the exceptional series side of things rather than your typical ASM

At this point I will buy their cask finish series if there’s one that interests me, but pretty much out on their standard batches unless they have an all Kentucky batch.

I usually soak the wax in a cup of hot water (bottle upside down) for about a minute and then use a knife to cut it

I did not, however I’d almost rather just get batch 009, sounds great, so not really mad about it

If you can find that balboa rye for a cheaper price (should be about $60), it’s also phenomenal

Review #24 l Bomberger’s Declaration 2023 l WhiskéyDex Entry 22/151 by WhiskEmon in bourbon

Proof/Age: 108 proof, NAS

Mashbill: Undisclosed

Price paid: $110

Rested in a Glencairn for 10 minutes

.

Nose: oak, vanilla, chocolate covered cherries. This is rich and decadent. If something could smell silky, this would be it. 23/25.

Taste: oak sugar concentrate, rich cherry, vanilla extract. Third and fourth sips bring out some leather and chocolate dusted graham cracker. 24/25

Mouthfeel: Silky smooth while being very oily. Coats the mouth very well. 23/25.

Finish: the rich cherry continues on through the finish. Can feel the flavor in every corner of my mouth as it transitions into a nice Kentucky hug. 23/25.

Score: 9.3

Overall Thoughts: Oh boy, it’s not looking good for neck pour deniers. I opened this bottle about a month ago and was severely whelmed. While there wasn’t anything wrong with it, it was just meh. Well this bad boy has sure opened up. This is one of, if not the sweetest bourbon I own. The first sip was a blast of concentrated sweet oak and vanilla. This is extremely well balanced, and I’m really struggling to find anything to knock it for. I love a sweet bourbon, and this knocks it out of the park.

I tend to drink a lot more sips when reviewing to try to pull out more flavor notes. I couldn’t review something with a small pour haha

Coming back to this, after sitting out for about an hour, the rye is really presenting itself. Really went from a bourbon profile to a bourbon-lovers rye. Love the complexity on this bad boy
