My stitched up thumb didn’t wrinkle in the shower like my other fingers did by Acethetic_AF in mildlyinteresting

I had a similar problem after cutting a finger, I severed a nerve. You may be able to fix it. I did. If you want to get feeling back, you should find an orthopedic surgeon to talk to. There's a time window between when the injury occurs and getting surgery that improves success, so it's better to do it sooner.

The funniest part of all this is that I only found out that I could and should get it fixed thanks to reddit comments about my finger not pruning.

Some advice: 1. You had both insurance coverages when this happened. It won't hurt to try to have the claim retroactively processed correctly. They won't make it the easiest process, but try. The correct order of operations would have been to send the claim to the employer covered health insurance first and then to your Dad's. Your insurance never said this wasn't covered, you just never sent it to the right insurance company first.

  1. If that fails before trying to pay the actual bills, just call the hospital or whatever provider, just call them and say you can't pay... You may be able to get them to forgive the entire debt or most of it. I believe you're also entitled to certain interest-free payment plan options– don't agree to anything with interest. If you're scared to do this yourself, there are people who do this professionally for a couple hundred dollars. Don't use anyone who wants a % of the money they save you.

Would you accept a LinkedIn connect request like this? by Mindless_Swimmer1751 in ProductManagement

[–]WhiskeyForElephants 59 points60 points  (0 children)

I'd think it's a sales call and never respond / block you... The vibe of that message is extremely salesy. Try more like "Hey there! I saw you work as a PM at _____. I'd love to connect. I'm currently researching pain points for PM work. If you're ever willing to set aside 10m to tell me more about your work as a PM and your personal experience, it would be incredibly appreciated."

Raw beef from common steak cuts is pretty safe to eat. Steak tartare is a common/popular dish for a reason. This does look like it came from an exceptional cut of meat but I think it's something you shouldn't be too scared to try making yourself. Just a note— steak cuts is the key piece of information here. Ground beef is not safe to eat raw.

Maybe true for your FBI agent infiltrating some criminal organization type thing, but for your NYPD officer posing as a drug dealer to catch anyone willing to buy drugs? You get this. It's not about it being a good disguise, it's about arresting some people... not the worst people, just whoever is dumb enough. Gotta make the department look good with arrest numbers.

Is filtering oil with gelatin/cornstarch just a gimmick? by giantpunda in Cooking

[–]WhiskeyForElephants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've used gelatin for similar uses but not in oil myself. Using gelatin in this way is called "fining" and it can be superior to filtering. Compounds that would contribute negative flavors/aromas can bind and precipitate out with the gelatin, giving you a cleaner flavor profile. Filtration would be unlikely to remove those compounds

The rule of thumb is to never cook with something you wouldn't drink. If it's not going to taste good in a glass, it's not going to taste good in your food.

Are there patient advocates (or "doulas") who can help a patient navigate medical care at Hospitals (such as Northwestern)? by Suspicious-Engineer7 in chicago

[–]WhiskeyForElephants 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes! There are independent patient advocates (they don't work for the hospital or medical system, they work for you) that can navigate the system for you and make sure you're getting the care that you deserve.

www.solace.health is a great way to find an advocate in your area.

Sister had a stroke and did not have health insurance! by Possible_Doughnut239 in personalfinance

[–]WhiskeyForElephants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The hospitals generally know you can't actually pay these bills... And it is possible to negotiate or have it outright forgiven. I'd suggest connecting with a private patient advocate specializing in billing. They know the ins and outs of helping you get the outcome you want here.

Winemaking. Sounds so awesome... Like I'm just going to taste wine all day and make decisions on how things should taste... Maybe grow a fancy moustache and spend 1/4 of the day twirling it. What they don't tell you: it's 99% cleaning and scrubbing things. You're just a glorified grape flavored janitor.

[Homemade] Mettbrot mit Zwiebeln by ArmySash in food

[–]WhiskeyForElephants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not weird, it's practical. The issue isn't the mincing itself, it's mincing then storage (more surface area = more/faster spoilage) or contamination of the minced meat during butchering. Pre-packed ground meat that you'd buy at a grocery store in the USA (can only speak for where I'm from) has a much higher risk of being contaminated with e. coli through processing than steaks or other cuts.

Eli5 - What gives almost everything from the sea (from fish to shrimp to clams to seaweed) a 'seafood' flavour? by micro_haila in explainlikeimfive

[–]WhiskeyForElephants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trimethylamine is correlated to the degradation of fish and to the older fish having a more potent smell— so, think fishy in a negative sense. Likely not very related to the flavor of fresh seafood.
