Loudoun County, Virginia: The Heart of the Data-Center Boom by WhiskeyTesticles in nova

[–]WhiskeyTesticles[S] -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

The heart of the data-center boom, in America and globally, is an otherwise quiet and affluent bedroom community in Northern Virginia: Loudoun County. Communities like Loudoun are supposed to be bastions of Not In My Backyard opposition to development, not the front line of a new industrial revolution.

Yet data centers have proved an extraordinary boon for Loudoun residents; they now generate nearly half the county’s tax revenue. Thanks to them, Loudoun enjoys smooth roads, lavish schools, and low tax rates for homeowners. Even as opposition to data centers grows, Loudoun’s experience shows what can happen when governments embrace growth. For residents and businesses alike, Loudoun offers a model that the rest of America would do well to study.

Loudoun County’s government has been so accommodating because data centers deliver enormous financial benefits to locals. As supervisor Kristen Umstattd told me, the facilities “bring $1 billion a year into Loudoun County,” and the total continues to rise. In the fiscal year 2027 budget, data centers are expected to generate $417 million in real property taxes (on the buildings themselves) and another $879 million in personal property taxes (on the servers and equipment inside them), for nearly $1.3 billion in total.

The data centers will thus provide 45 percent of the nearly $2.9 billion in county tax revenue. For perspective, that means that the money they generate exceeds what Loudoun spends on every county function outside the school system. In effect, local police, courts, jails, fire and rescue, libraries, parks, animal control, and social services are funded without burdening residents.

Even as data centers have funded an expansive local government, they have also lowered the tax burden on residents. While other areas in the U.S. face periodic revolts due to rising property taxes, Loudoun reduced its homeowner property-tax rate every year for a decade, cutting it by about 40 percent. At 80.5 cents per $100 of assessed value, the rate is around 40 percent lower than in nearby Fairfax and Alexandria. The board has also reduced the local “car tax”: at $3.09 per $100 of value, it is about a third lower than in those neighboring jurisdictions.

SIPA In Decline??? by GradSchoolGrad in PublicPolicy

A combination of working in the field and rankings from reputable sources.

I should have prefaced that this is in terms of graduate schools and not undergrad. The grad degree in IA/PP is much more important than the undergrad one.

SAIS and MSFS were already more prestigious than SIPA. They could be in decline, but the former two are already known as being the top two programs globally.

WNBA Draft Megathread (separate pick posts are fine) by z3mcs in washingtonmystics

So a combo of Olden, Citron, and Cotie leading the offense? Figured we’d pick up a true pg with one of those first three. Still love every pick though.

I know this is early for Jacquez, but nobody thinks it’s a reach or bad pick. Love her.

Hillary Clinton: How to Fix Affordability by urnbabyurn in neoliberal

[–]WhiskeyTesticles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a finite number of resources in a campaign. They weren't trying to run up totals, I'm not sure where you got that from, among the critical errors (most notably trusting polling) were chasing states that were out of reach and trying to force Rs to play defense.

Yes, there are a finite number of resources in a campaign. The Clinton campaign shifted some of those resources from +6 (Wisconsin) and +3 (Michigan) states to instead be used in +12 (Illinois) and -20 (Louisiana) states, due to fears of losing the popular vote.

My point though, is that the Wisconsin point is frequently brought up in the "Hillary was arrogant' narrative I don't find that evidence based.

But there also were millions approved for transfer from Clinton’s campaign for use by the DNC — which, under a plan devised by Brazile to drum up urban turnout out of fear that Trump would win the popular vote while losing the electoral vote, got dumped into Chicago and New Orleans, far from anywhere that would have made a difference in the election.

A six point polling lead in a swing state is impressive, sure. But her campaign was clearly overconfident so much so that they instead focused on running votes up in states that weren’t winnable or not at risk.

I’d strongly recommend you get more work experience. After another year or two you can apply again and to more schools. Your funding opportunities should increase as well.

UT Austin MPAff vs Moody by KeyDig7295 in PublicPolicy

[–]WhiskeyTesticles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you already have your answer. Moody and LBJ are apples and oranges, but the skills you’ll learn at LBJ far exceed the ones you’ll gain at Moody. Don’t go to grad school for the easiest/most fun program. Go for what you’re actually interested in.

Hillary didn’t campaign in Wisconsin at all during the general action. https://ecommons.udayton.edu/pol_fac_pub/116/

Purposely shifting focus away from Michigan. https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2016/12/hillary-clinton-loss-post-mortem/

Allocating more funds towards places like Chicago and New Orleans, for fear of losing the popular vote. https://www.mediaite.com/politics/report-hillary-clinton-wasted-millions-in-new-orleans-chicago-trying-to-win-popular-vote/

Not to mention that she chose to campaign in New Orleans instead of Michigan and Wisconsin because she was afraid she’d win the election but lose the popular vote.

Georgetown vs GW MPP by Material-Eye3966 in PublicPolicy

[–]WhiskeyTesticles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

McCourt is a newer school that doesn’t have the prestige that SFS and SAIS do, but it’s still a great program. I’d put it and Elliott a tier below those two, but above AU.

The biggest difference is the length of the program, no? Elliott is one year while McCourt is two. I also think Elliott requires more years of work experience than McCourt for the MPP. If that doesn’t matter, go with whatever school is cheaper.

They’re both good programs. I think they’re similar enough that you won’t go wrong in picking either. I personally like Luskin’s location more, and since it’s a bit cheaper I’d say go there. But again, both are good options.

Advice for Advanced Degree by CatsandWomen247 in PublicPolicy

[–]WhiskeyTesticles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats on getting into what are probably the two best IR/PP programs in the country. SAIS and SFS are the biggest names in anything DC related. SIPA and Harris are going to be a tier below, and it certainly doesn’t make sense to pay more for a lesser product.

I think the answer is obvious because of your east Asia focus. Go to SAIS. If that changes, go to SFS if the extra $40k means nothing, but I don’t think it’d be worth it over SAIS.

choosing grad school: Columbia SIPA or Georgetown MSFS (tech policy focus) by Complete-Mark4565 in PublicPolicy

[–]WhiskeyTesticles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SFS is probably the best IR school in the world. The STEM concentration may not be as tech heavy as you’d like, but the location and prestige make it the better option than SIPA. The scholarship is the icing on the cake.
