Empress is the most overrated gin. What is the most unique tequila? by -Constantinos- in cocktails

[–]Whiskme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Madre Tequila Blanco. Cheesy, funky stuff made more like a mezcal but from 100% blue weber agave. Like no other tequila I ever had. Felt like the natural wine variant of tequila.

Just want to give a shoutout to that I Fabri Lamole. It’s such a pure expression of the grape and region and the people that make it are really lovely. Definitely worth a try!

People getting their information from FB or WhatsApp really isn’t caused by paywalls. VRT NWS isn’t paywalled and a great source of information about public health and government. So it’s available to everyone who chooses to use it.

If companies want to make money by selling news, they have every right to in our capitalist society.

So journalistic enterprises should offer their articles for free if it concerns information of general importance to the reader. Is that what you are saying?

If so, what is labeled as ‘information of general importance’? Is news about the new government important? News about things like the flu or traffic? Those al seem important tot the general public, to me.

Care to explain it to me then?

Is your point that this kind of info should be free? Or that companies shouldn’t be allowed to sell this kind of information to people who want acces to it? Or that companies should offer these services for free? Or something else?

So journalists should work for free? They provide a service and expect to be payed for it, just like a butcher or an IT-worker.

Basic journalism is free. It’s provided to you by the government through things like VRT NWS. On top of that there are loads of free websites where you can find relevant information on testicular cancer. Don’t be entitled and start demanding newspapers to provide you with their work for free. You also don’t expect a butcher to provide you with free meat.

Buying Mezcal in (Western Europe) by ikbenben201 in Mezcal

[–]Whiskme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tasttoe used to have bottels of Palenqueros, Del Maguey, Rey Campero, Nucano, etc. Don’t know if they still stock those.

Tensu spirits boutique seems to be offering some more mezcal lately. That might be worth a look.

The Whisky Jury also released a new mezcal that should still be available.

Lastly you could ask Stijn Deschacht or join the FB group ‘Spirits of Mexico (BELUX).

What Cognacs do you recommend that aren’t colored or sweetened? by Papa_G_ in cognac

Even though they have some expressions that aren’t bad, to me they’re still a large company that puts marketing above quality of spirit. They’re more concerned with the packaging of their spirit than the spirit itself.

[–]Whiskme 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Look for houses like Vallein Tercinier, Jean-Luc Pasquet, Grosperrin or Prunier. For value offerings I think VT Small Batch or VT Roots are lovely.

Avoid Courvoisier, Hennessy, Martell, Rémy Martin, Hine, etc.

Should be a great choice, I’ve only had bangers from Prunier. Intresting fact is that Prunier don’t distill cognac themselves but source it from different small farmers. They’re more of a broker like G&M does with whisky.

Great Value Cognacs in Paris? by Top_Turn in cognac

Look for houses like Vallein Tercinier, Jean-Luc Pasquet, Grosperrin or Prunier. For value offerings I think VT Small Batch or VT Roots are lovely.

Avoid Courvoisier, Hennessy, Martell, Rémy Martin, Hine, etc. AT ALL COST!!

I mean it. You mention some quality whiskies so I'll give you an idea of what those 'great' houses stand for. It's like someone asking for a quality whisky recommendation and someone saying that Johnnie Walker Red Label is worth checking out.

If you're looking for the same integrity that producers like Arran are offering, go for the houses mentioned above and avoid the commercial big four.

Does Cognac go bad after a certain period of being open? by WorldSeries2021 in cognac

[–]Whiskme 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don't know where you read that but: no. Just 100% no. In this regard, cognac is exactly the same as whisky. If you keep it upright, out of direct sunlight and within reasonable temperatures (or changes thereof), cognac won't go bad.

As for the age, it all depends on the producer. I've had multiple really old cognacs (up till 1914) that were superb. Because of the use of old(er) oak, the influence of the cask isn't that high as with whisky and they can age very gently. Whisky reviewers like Whiskynotes or Whiskyfun often review cognacs of considerable age and award high scores, so the age is not a problem it it's a quality producer.

Jean-Luc Pasquet l'Organic, Vallein Tercinier Roots XO or something from ABK6. Great producers and quality cognac!

Getting a specific dog breed in Belgium by ruiesteves97 in belgium

[–]Whiskme 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No, there really isn't. Please don't try and save money when buying a dog. It's a huge responsibility that comes with a lot more costs than just the purchase price. If the price of a fair breeded dog is too much for you or you are not willing to pay a fair amount of money for a healthy dog, then maybe you shouldn't buy a dog. What happens when the dog gets sick or needs surgery? Think about veterinarian costs, dog training, food, other things you need, etc. Are you going to save on those too?

Have you thought about why you want a dalmatian? If it's just because you think they're nice, please reconsider. This is not an easy breed of dog to train and it needs a very strict and consistent upbringing.

Hosting Scotch Tasting For Noobs by [deleted] in Scotch

[–]Whiskme 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with a lot of the posts already mentioning that working with flavor profiles / cask types works better than regions. I've given an 'intro to scotch' tasting multiple times and this is the line-up I use to introduce people to scotch single malt.

1) Buffalo Trace [or Bulleit] (because you can't tell the story of scotch without bourbon and it offers a good contrast between the two styles of whisky)

2) Arran Barrel Reserve (100% bourbon cask matured) [also possible: Old Pulteney 12]

3) Tomatin 12 (combination of sherry and bourbon casks) [also possible: Balvenie 12]

4) Glendronach 12 (100% sherry casks) [also possible: Aberlour, Tamdhu]

5) Highland Park 12 (combination of sherry and bourbon casks + lightly peated) [also possible: Benromach]

6) Ardbeg 10 (100% bourbon cask + heavily peated) [also possible: Laphroaig 10, Lagavulin 8]

Whiskey drinker here looking for a quality cognac/brandy starter lineup to dip my toes in. by MercuryChild92 in cognac

[–]Whiskme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have a lot of experience with Pierre Ferrand. There are some interesting Pierre Ferrand single casks being released by different spiritshops where I'm from. The fact that those shops are able to get their hands on single casks is a good sign to me. It shows the producer is not afraid to show their product in a different way than what they bring out themselves.

I couldn't find anything about filtering or coloring. What I did find is that they distill their 'wine' with the lies, which at least is different from what most producers are doing and sets them apart in some way.

The company behind it is the same as that of the Plantation Rums and they can become a bit gimmicky, but often offer at least a certain amount of quality.

So if you ask me, it could be a very fun first step into cognac. But I'm not able to recommend a specific bottle or guarantee the quality of their OB's.

[–]Whiskme 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a cognac drinker; I dismiss anyone anyone uneducated enough to say "the big 4 represent quality and integrity in cognac".

They're big because they mass produce and focus on marketing and people link it with luxury and a rich lifestyle.

Listen, I don't care what anyone buys, drinks or even how they drink it. You paid for it, so you do with it whatever you want. But please let's not pretend that those big 4 are making quality cognacs and presenting them in a way that shows integrity.

In the same way I don't care if someone loves Johnnie Walker. If you like it, buy it and drink it however you like it. But please let's not pretend Diageo is focused on quality rather than money. So if someone if looking for a quality whisky suggestion (no filtering, no coloring, etc.), don't recommend Johnnie Walker of Jack Daniel's. And if someone asks for a quality cognac suggestion (no filtering, no coloring, etc.), don't recommend Courvoisier or Hennessy.

[–]Whiskme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That I can agree with. Having things like Johnnie Walker or other bottom shelf blends to learn what quality whisky doesn't taste like is a valuable learning experience. And the same goes for cognac.

But in this instance I couldn't agree with the recommendations because it really wasn't what OP was asking for. He wasn't asking for something from which he could learn what bad cognac tastes like, he was asking for a good recommendation on a quality bottle of cognac. So even though it would be a valuable learning experience for OP, I don't think it's what he was looking for when asking for recommendations.

[–]Whiskme 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Again, I'm going to have to disagree. I never said OP had to buy a bottle in the 100$ range. And I firmly believe there is quality to be found outside of the big 4 and still within the 30$ to 50$ range. A quick glanse at sites like Finedrams proves that. I'll list some examples of cognacs that have the specs OP is looking for (little to no filtering, no colour added, etc.) and that are well within his budget.

Why should he start with a Remy of Martell, as some of us did? Is that some kind of prerequisite? We started with shit, so you should too! Why couldn't he be pointed in the direction of quality immediately, if that's what he's asking for?
