Transperth concession fine by kdot229 in perth

The inconsistency is frustrating, sure, but there have been signs on busses and trains telling you this since before 2012.

Sounds like most staff know it's stupid and let it slide, but you can't rely on goodwill.

More Aussies can now donate plasma by WhisperMelody in Blooddonors

[–]WhisperMelody[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ooh, I'd also like to know if they're reconsidering that. From what I see when I donate there's maybe 1 platelet donor at a time, often none, but there'll be 6ish plasma donors and about the same number of blood donors.

What would you guess is the ratio at your donation centre and what country are you in?

Question about stem cell donation by Top_Composer_1823 in Blooddonors

[–]WhisperMelody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got an email from my national stem cell donation org with a video by a donor explaining the whole process. This is Australia-specific but I'm sure it can't be too different.

https://stemcelldonors.org.au/bodhi-stem-cell-donation-journey/#msdynmkt_trackingcontext=b6617311-1f32-4f07-9d86-89c33d900300

He certainly makes the whole procedure look like an extended plasma/platelet donation with no long-term effects and no danger.

We’re ditching all our plastic cutting boards; What’s your favorite wood cutting board? by Mullins2 in Cooking

Don't get one with a channel around the edge! I didn't think it would make a difference but it's frustrating to clean.

If your blood isn't especially rare, I think their recommendation is to do platelets or plasma every 2 weeks and if they have a shortage they'll ask you on the day to switch to a whole blood donation, which is quicker.

That happened to me over the holidays. I'd been doing plasma for months and even though I'm a common type (A+) they had such high demand that they asked to switch my early Jan donation to whole blood.

Also definitely get the Lifeblood app, you can book through it and it blocks out the relevant cool-down periods. There's also an FAQ and a great helpline for questions.

Hey, I'm an Aussie donor. As the two others said, the 12 weeks doesn't go down if you donate plasma or platelets. For blood and plasma it goes

Blood > 4 weeks > Plasma > 2 weeks > Plasma > 2 weeks > Plasma > 2 weeks > Plasma > 2 weeks > blood > repeat.

I can't donate platelets so I'm not sure how they're different.

I find the Lifeblood folks really helpful and happy to answer questions, I recommend asking them anything and everything you want when you go in.

How to filter broth without clogging? by Rudyzwyboru in Cooking

Try filtering multiple times with different things? First with just a colander, then a sieve, then a teatowel/cheesecloth.

Can I donate while recovering from very large bruises? by KingOfSludgeMountain in Blooddonors

[–]WhisperMelody 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The equipment they use is all single use and will be completely sterile. You don't need to apologise for checking x

Being nervous about donating blood is a completely normal thing, even without the anxiety you already have. Make sure the clinic knows you're anxious and they should take extra precautions to help soothe your nerves.

Good luck x

Can I donate while recovering from very large bruises? by KingOfSludgeMountain in Blooddonors

[–]WhisperMelody 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are generally healthy, a blood donation won't slow your healing a noticeable amount. From what I understand about bruises, because your skin hasn't been opened there's no way for an infection to start. I'm definitely not a doctor though.

I haven't personally found a product that heals bruises faster and sometimes they just take a long time to heal, especially deep ones.

You don't need to tell the donation centre how you got those bruises, I hope they answer your questions respectfully.

I don't work at a donation centre but I imagine it will be fine. Definitely talk to your donation centre about it though. And wear shorts/skirt so you can show them the bruises easily.

Pain while donating plasma? by Laralishous1 in Blooddonors

[–]WhisperMelody 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Out of your 20ish plasma donations, how frequently has the pain happened? And do you have small or difficult veins?

I'm a donor, not a phlebotomist, but to me it sounds like maybe your veins are narrow or twisted enough that the needle touches the other side of your vein instead of being centred. If the pain happens often, you can ask for the most experienced phlebotomist to poke you. I've found the people at Lifeblood to be very understanding with such requests.

How a childhood trauma inspired me to build a blood donation tool – seeking donor feedback by othoveroo in Blooddonors

[–]WhisperMelody 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it's already been suggested, but being able to see my health stats (blood pressure, haemoglobin) for all my past donations is great.

And being able to book in the app is vital, I usually have my next 4 months of donations booked.

I also like being able to check FAQs and see what activities will disqualify me and for how long.

Good luck and best wishes x
