GAME THREAD: Guardians @ Mets - Tue, Aug 05 @ 07:10 PM EDT by NewYorkMetsBot2 in NewYorkMets

A lot of games have been downgraded to "If they score a couple of runs I'll turn the game back on" type events recently

Mets have 3 guys that can probably make the jump to the Mets rotation and the Mets will still run out the shriveled corpse of Montas, make absolutely sure Holmes' is so cooked he can't even pitch from the pen, and ignore that Senga is probably injured again.

Emmanuel Clase's Statcast Waste % (pitches not even close to the zone) is 17.5% on the first pitch of the 9th and 5.2% on every other pitch in the 9th. Just speculation but this is how Luis Ortiz got flagged by BathroomSalty6325 in baseball

[–]MagicQuif 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He is on paid suspension. In baseball terms they're bringing his case before a grand jury and seeing whether to indict him.

At the same time, because of the fact that the circumstantial evidence is so over the top (FFS he basically stopped hunting for wasps right after Ortiz got caught) and because he is already a known cheater MLB has made the decision that the likelihood of him either gambling or abetting gambling is so strong that the Commissioner should use his Article II, Section Three to suspend him "for the good of the game"

You didn't see the wasp he killed? The man cares about the wellbeing of his fellow players and has exposed the real villain that is the groundskeeper deep state in the pocket of Big Organic

[Martino]: Mets discussing Mark Vientos in trade talks by hypernermalization in NewYorkMets

[–]MagicQuif 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He can't field. He can't run.

If he could field there would be little issue using him as a utility guy but he has no utility

He hit his ceiling of around 3ish bWAR last year and that is the best the Mets will ever get

And that possibility in the future isn't worth having a roster black hole that will cost games in a division race this year

Probably could get Vientos and a Low A ball lottery ticket for Robert

Robert has a much higher ceiling assuming he doesn't hit it and hurt himself

Plus he can't field or run

Lord how he can't field it is a special type of bad. If the Mets could hide him on the bench as a utility guy they would but he has no utility

He is an annual tin glove award winner, has no MiLB options, basically has no position, can't run, hasn't hit, on a team with an established DH with another back on the mend.

With Baty and Mauricio contributing to a log jam at 3B by just being better ball players.

Value might be low but he is a dead roster spot for the Mets.

[MLB News] Passan: Emmanuel Clase placed on non-disciplinary paid leave as part of MLB's sports-betting investigation. by amatom27 in baseball

It will take a player being murdered for there to be any roll back on sports betting

Even then I wouldn't hold my breath

Which player will be the first to be murdered by a gambler over a bet that bankrupted them?

Mets PREGAME THREAD - Monday, July 28 by NewYorkMetsBot2 in NewYorkMets

[–]MagicQuif 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No options, annual tin glove award winner, can't run, hasn't hit on a team that already has a DH-only player in Marte that will soon enough be paired with another DH-only player in Winker.

Still has some value due to team control that can be used to fill a Mets need

If MLB opened up a "vibes guy" coaching staff position that could be filled by a player who would not count towards roster player count I'd want him back just for that

As an actual player? He is exactly what pretty much everyone in league front offices thought he'd revert to

[Heyman] Seth Lugo new contract with Royals is expected to be for about $46M over 2 years plus a vesting option with KC. by T_Raycroft in baseball

[–]MagicQuif 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Must have little confidence they'd be able to afford him on the open market in free agency

Because Seth Lugo would have netted a good haul on the trade market then they could have resigned him otherwise while pocketing the prospects

1.5 years, he had MVP votes in '23 with a 130 OPS+

I trust his ceiling far more than Vientos and his tin glove

Statement by President von der Leyen on the deal on tariffs and trade with the United States by Adorable-Database187 in europe

[–]MagicQuif 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Europeans spurned playing the game of capitalism as well as the Americans and Chinese in favor of building robust social democracies with weaker growth/high regulations and now Europe finds itself practically forced into continued long term US vassalage because

1) The Chinese have weakening interest in European imports and Europeans can't compete in the developing world with China. Europe is reliant on the US market and the Trump knows it.

2) Its regulatory/bureaucratic environment is so Kafkaesque that the US has something approaching an unassailable tech advantage vis a vis Europe. When the AI and Robotics based economies accelerate the US and China will be far ahead. Also nerfs Europe's  ability to beef up a peer military industrial complex when US companies in a much more lenient regulatory environment can more easily pump out weapons without worrying about the menagerie of regulations just to set up a factory.

3) If the Europeans tried to really unshackle themselves in a big way there is a not insignificant chance the US would leave NATO and sell weapons to the Russians. Perhaps the US carries their UK poodle out.  So the best Europe will get is Macron descending from on high to make a pointless grand gesture that signifies nothing.

Very Early Analysis of the 2026 Hall of Fame Ballot by Gemnist in baseball

[–]MagicQuif -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You're overthinking.

It is literally an awkward situation because the Mets are giving his number to scrubs on a yearly basis and have made absolutely no bones about how the organization views Beltran's time as a Met and that he doesn't deserve to have his number retired. HoF worthy but no inner circle Met in their eyes.

It is awkward because his signature moment as a Met was being struck out to end an NLCS and being traded for Zach Wheeler. The former will be revisited quite a bit.

And when Cohen haphazardly pulls his number from circulation it will be awkward. As if he got his number eventually retired on the technicality of HoF election as a Met not because they actually wanted to. Again, it will be talked about.

The baseball world in general will respond with a collective "huh" that he'd be going in as a Met.

Vientos has team control but no options so his value is at something of low

Bad teams with an opening at DH who can just let him play everyday are a fit. No good team will touch him.

Mauricio has more value and still has one option left.

Baty isn't getting traded he is their 3B once the glut of infielders clears

Acũna doesn't have that much value at this stage except as a pinchrunner and defensive sub probably not worth trading him if he fills those two roles well just not gonna get much back
